Prison Break Correctional Liability Update May 2013 Housing Gang Members Together: Can a Blood and a Crip Just Get Along? By Susan E. Coleman Inmates who are assaulted by other inmates, whether cell mates, co- workers, or inmates on the yard, often sue prison administrators for failing to protect them. After all, the Eighth Amendment has been interpreted by the courts to include a duty to protect prisoners. However, a vague risk of harm simply because prisons are violent places which house dangerous criminals is not enough to create liability; something more specific is required. In the case of Labatad v. Corrections Corporation of America, et al, decided on May 1, 2013, the Ninth Circuit found that even housing rival gang members together was insufficient under the circumstances to find that defendants were deliberately indifferent. Labatad, a State of Hawaii inmate incarcerated at the Saguaro Correctional Center, operated by the Corrections Corporation of America Susan E. (“CCA”), was assaulted by his cellmate in July 2009. Naturally, Labatad Coleman is sued CCA for failing to protect him, alleging deliberate indifference to a partner at his safety under the Eighth Amendment. Escape of Nine Prisoners from the Kenitra Prison in Morocco The Incident On 7 April 2008, nine men convicted of terrorist offences escaped from a prison in Kenitra, Morocco located 25 km north of the capital city of Rabat. The escape occurred around 5.30 a.m after dawn prayer. The prisoners escaped by digging a tunnel which surfaced in the backyard of the prison director’s house.1 They are believed to have had assistance both inside the prison and outside the tunnel. The Moroccan authorities said all nine prisoners had been convicted of offences related to the 2003 Casablanca bombings, which killed 45 people and represent the largest terrorist attack in Moroccan history.2 In a note left behind in the prison, the prisoners apologized for causing a “disturbance” but claimed that escaping was the last resort left to them after repeated efforts to demonstrate their innocence. They also complained of poor treatment within the prison, which they cited as a motivation in the escape. Two of the prisoners had been sentenced to death; four were serving life sentences, and the remaining three had been sentenced to twenty years in prison.3 The Escaped Prisoners The nine escaped prisoners are believed to have met only in prison, where they planned their escape. They apparently belonged to different terrorist cells and networks. In the aftermath of the 2003 bombings, more than 1400 Moroccans associated with Salafism were arrested and charged with terrorism related activities. These nine appear to have been detained in that sweep and subsequently convicted of various offences.4 The escaped prisoners are as follows: - Abdullah Bo Ghumair, alias Abu Hafs: Sentenced for life in August 2003 for the murder of a French citizen. -

DAVID KLOTZ Music Editor David Klotz has devoted his career to the music side of the film and tv industry, primarily as a music editor, but also as a composer, songwriter and music supervisor. He has won six Emmy awards for his work on Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and American Horror Story. He got his start music supervising Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed film, Memento. Soon after, he moved into music editing, working on the shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Blade, the TV Series, to name a few. In 2005, he formed Galaxy Beat Media, his music editorial and production company, working on TV shows including Entourage, Prison Break, Glee, and the Marvel feature film, Iron Man. David co-wrote and performed the theme song to the 2001 Robert Rodriguez blockbuster, Spy Kids. He most recently produced and arranged a cover of the 1984 classic “Never Ending Story” for Stranger Things Season 3, available on the show’s soundtrack album. David’s band Dream System 8 has created music for dozens of TV shows including 9-1-1, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and Pose. VOLUME 21 On the Publication Series We are pleased to present the latest volume in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna’s publication series. The series, published in cooperation with our highly com- mitted partner Sternberg Press, is devoted to central themes of contemporary thought about art practices and theories. The volumes comprise contribu- tions on subjects that form the focus of discourse in art theory, cultural studies, art history, and research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and represent the quintessence of international study and discussion taking place in the respective fields. Each volume is published in the form of an anthology, edited by staff members of the academy. Authors of high international repute are invited to make contributions that deal with the respective areas of emphasis. Research activities such as international conferences, lecture series, institute- specific research focuses, or research projects serve as points of departure for the individual volumes. Pegasus-Onlinezeitschrift XIX (2019/2020) Seite 1 Seiten 1 bis 37 Benedikt Simons Mit Homer in die Wüste – Die Rezeption der Odyssee in „American Odyssey” und „Prison Break, Season 5” und die Möglichkeiten für den altsprachlichen Unterricht Die breite und tiefe Rezeption der homerischen Epen gerade auch in den modernen Medien steht angesichts solcher Blockbuster wie Wolf- gang Petersens „Troia” (2004) oder der Netflixserie, „Troia – Untergang einer Stadt” (2018), aber auch des durchaus interessanten1 Versuchs „Odysseus” (2013) wie schon früherer Verfilmungen außer Frage.2 Ist die Rezeption des epischen Stoffes bei diesen Verfilmungen offensicht- lich, liegt sie bei zwei anderen amerikanischen TV–Serien aus jüngster Zeit nicht auf der Hand, da sie in den Rahmen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem islamistischen Terror und den Krisenherden des Nahen Ostens eingebettet sind und auch zum Genre der „Actionserien” gezählt wer- den können. Roth was nominated for both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 1995 for “Rob Roy.” Roth is well known for notable roles in such films as “Pulp Fiction,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Four Rooms,” “The Incredible Hulk, “Planet of the Apes,” and “Dark Water,” and he recently starred on the FOX series “Lie to Me.” He will next be seen starring in the film “Broken,” and opposite Nicole Kidman in “Grace of Monaco.” The mini-series, previously announced last year, is based on Charlotte Gray's book Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike, and brings to life the tale about six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the remote Klondike. KLONDIKE is a co-production between Discovery, Entertainment One (eOne), and Nomadic Pictures, in association with Scott Free Productions. International distribution is handled by eOne Television.
