REACHING FOR THE BLUE DHHS preparing response to request for report on DSS compliance problems

By Allen Turner [email protected]

The N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is preparing a response to a request from this newspaper for copies of documents that have prompted the state to require the Columbus County Dept. of Social Services (DSS) to hire an outside consultant for which the DSS will have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to help bring the department into compliance with child welfare regulations. In a meeting with this newspaper last week, Columbus County DSS Director Algernon McKenzie did not discuss specifics of the shortcomings identified in the report, saying only that problems involved timeline and documentation requirements. McKenzie also said that a decision still had not been made on which consultant would be hired, or at what cost. McKenzie had told county commissioners on Aug. 15 that, in response to a review of local records to ensure local com- pliance with laws, rules and policies, the state is mandating that a consultant be engaged. McKenzie told commissioners that the consultant recom- mended by the state DHHS director would cost $53,000 for three months of work. Another potential consultant possibly could do the work for $28,500, he said, but that consultant might take more than three months to complete the job, driving up the costs. McKenzie told commissioners the state will reimburse 40-50 percent of what the county has to pay the consultant, Staff photo by Grant Merritt but the county will be responsible for the balance.
