I pray they will all be changes for the better, however, what really has become clear to me during these 41 years or more is what President's has not changed. For instance, the need to belong somewhere to someone. I define that as the need for Home. Home being defined as that place where you are accepted just because you exist. It Message matters not what you look like, what you have or have not done. You are unconditionally loved, simply because you are there. To Peace in the Midst of Change experience healthy relationships where others value you and they allow you to value them. These are important anchors that as an As I seek to gather my thoughts to put words Institution, or as an individual, I believe we must never change. on paper for this message, the thing that keeps staring me in the face is how some things need to remain the same As Jesus said in Matthew 5:9 “They are blessed who work for while everything seems to be changing. I have been blessed by peace, for they will be called God’s Children.” I am so thankful being at this Institution for over 41 years. During this time I have that I am surrounded by Staff, Volunteers, and Donors who are seen the means, the methods and the terminology used to explain all “Peace Makers”. And you ask why do I call all of you Peace what we do change several times. In fact, I have experienced Makers? It is because through each of our roles we play, and as at least 4 major efforts to completely revamp the systems with long as we remain true to our Mission, we are introducing each the goal being that children and families would be better served youth and their family member to the Teachings of Christ which than previously at the state level. Task forces have been formed, results in experiencing God’s Love for self and others. That to me consultants have been contracted with, and much planning and is real peace, and whatever changes that come about, and they discussion has occurred. I have had the privilege of serving as will, we can remain grounded and will experience Home. a task force member on some of these past efforts, and recently some other members of our staff are serving on committees and May all of you experience God’s Love in the New Year. groups seeking to improve the delivery system of care within the State of Louisiana. On some of our earlier efforts we managed to Seeking His Peace I am, implement some real improvements, however in many cases the political will required to commit the financial resources did not come about and the efforts failed. I pray for its success at meeting the needs of our youth. Major changes are anticipated that will affect our Institution, requiring changes in procedures and funding sources.

Angel Tree Parties (continued)

Kathy Modest and her wonderful dietary Alumni Letter crew getting ready to serve Angel Party Home Staff: Christmas dinner to CAB youth. Dear Children’s

I just wanted to send a note to let you know that I was a resident there in 2002-2004 in Harman House. I just wanted to thank you so much for the guidance you gave me and hard work the staff put in. This was the most special place I have ever been with the best outcome I’ve ever had. I would like to let you know I’ve become a better person due to the happiness I received from this Group Home. I am merely just saying Thank You! I’d like to let the children know how special you are and what you can do if only they would open their hearts.

Thank You So Much!

Sincerely, C.H. President and CEO Terrel DeVille attending the festivities in the CAB Building.

Pathways • Winter 2010 3 Jay Hinckley’s Retirement The BUZZ After 11½ years of dedicated service to the Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home, OWL Agricultural Supervisor from Dr. Bob Jay Hinckley will retire from his position. Jay began his Dr. Robert W. Flournoy, work with LMCH in a volunteer capacity and it was soon Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving realized that his knowledge and work ethic would greatly benefit our Home in such a way that he was offered a full time job! In his time here, Jay’s contributions to programs and daily operations at the OWL have been nothing less Success Rate? than vital. He was instrumental in the development of our OWL Salsa, and many of you know him because of When I give talks to civic clubs, churches or church this. Jay also had a vision for a little something we call organizations and visit with donors, I am frequently asked the MAZE. His vision was brought to reality and many about the “success” rate with our youth. It is very difficult youth, not only from our facility, but youth groups to determine a success rate. It is even difficult to define a state-wide have experienced the A-MAZE-ing Maze at success rate. Youth come to us emotionally, physically, and our OWL facility. There are countless other programs that sexually abused. The traumas these youth have experienced Jay has had a hand in bringing to fruition and he will be make them very distrustful of anyone, especially adults. greatly missed. We look forward to seeing Jay around We try very hard to penetrate the shell they have used for in a volunteer capacity again, and will enjoy seeing him years to protect themselves from perpetrators. We may be at Alumni events in the future. The BEST OF LUCK to the only positive influence they have ever experienced, and you, Jay!! sometimes letting us “in” is too painful at this stage in their life. It takes a lot of patience and counseling to build trust so that healing can begin. And, when their time with Troy Luttgeharm (left) and us is short (due to the recommendation of their OCS case Jay Hinckley at Jay's retirement party. worker), we are not always able to begin the healing.

But for our purposes here, I will define “success” as helping a child to overcome the abuse and neglect they experienced before coming to us and to set them on a path for a wholesome life, all under the umbrella of the love of God. With that definition, I can say that we have a 95% success rate. The other 5% we cannot reach, no matter how much we love them, care for them (this is my opinion and it cannot be quantified by research).

How do you put a dollar value on turning a life around? How do you equate dollars and success? The answer to both questions is “you can’t”. We are talking here about spiritual matters, things unseen to us. There is no way to put a dollar value on a child’s life. We are an agency where the love of God is part of everything we do: from counseling, to recreation, to administration, to physical properties, to mailings, to medicine, to therapy, and the list goes on……

That’s why your prayers, in addition to your financial gifts, are so important to us. Our staff is on the front line of daily spiritual battles for our youth. The enemy does not want to release the hold they have on these youth. Your prayers help us win these spiritual battles. Your prayers are the weapons that fight the enemy. They are extremely important.

Thank you for your prayers and financial gifts to support the Home. We are truly appreciative and depend on your faithfulness. NOMAD volunteers attending Jay's retirement party.

Gift Annuities Offer Dual Advantages Most people today want to make money from their investments, whether it is from a CD, municipal bond, or purchase of stock. We truly believe the "best investment" today is an annuity. If you like high payout rates and fixed payments, these investments bear worth investigating and considering.

Gift annuities are particularly attractive giving options for mature individuals and couples. Because the payout rate is based on age, the older the beneficiary, the higher the rate. Example: an individual aged 70 can receive 6.0% for lifetime investment of $5000 or more.

If an annuity interests you, contact the Public Relations, Development and Marketing (PDRM) Department at 866-255-5830 (in state). Gift annuities benefit you and leave your legacy for the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home and Family Services.

Olive Garden

Each year the Olive Garden Corporation chooses a charity to support during the Holiday Season. For 2009, after doing a little bit of research on a local orphanage in New Orleans whose residents had been displaced during Hurricane Katrina, the Olive Garden Corporation chose the Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services, Inc. to support. The method of raising money is a fun one for all employees. It quickly became a game of “who can give the most”, with each person trying to “out-do” the other. The money raised was used to purchase items from the Home’s General Wish List and included items such as 4 bicycles, games, skateboards and other fun items for the youth. We are very grateful to the employees of Olive Garden who raised the money, did the shopping and then delivered the gifts to our Ruston campus. Employees Alanna Johnson, Adelia Henderson, Babs Lopiccolo, and Margarita Salas delivered the gifts to Ruston.

Fall Festival

After two canceled dates due to inclement weather, the Fall Festival was finally held at the OWL Center in Dubach. Our youth and staff both had so much fun with the carnival style games, hayrides, pony rides, and blow up attractions. Everyone was excited to finally get together and the weather was great! Thanks to all of our volunteers who stuck with us and were able to attend even though we had to change the date! New this year was a group of photography students from Louisiana Tech University. They set up their equipment and took fun pictures of the youth and printed them right there on the spot! This was a great treat for our youth.

A State of the Shoe Box Report: MCH Operation Christmas Child 2009

By Erin Rockett, LPC, LMFT campus director introduced the project to his church’s youth bible MCH Family Therapist study group, and they completed several boxes to send in with MCH Project Coordinator, Operation Christmas Child campus gift boxes.

Long before the aroma of roasting turkeys and stories of Campus-wide celebrations of giving culminated in a dedication pilgrims circulated MCH in November, a flurry of different service at the MCH Chapel on Wednesday, November 11, at activity overtook the Ruston campus. Operation Christmas 4:00pm. Youth and staff presented their boxes at the altar for Child, an annual MCH outreach project, was conducted as part a special time of prayer, scripture, and blessing, facilitated by of international mission project “Operation Christmas Child”, Rev. Mickey Stringfield. Youth and staff alike were inspired and coordinated by Samaritan’s Purse International, a nonprofit entertained by a performance of “We Are the World,” sung by missions and humanitarian relief organization. In 2009 our the MCH staff chorale. The chorale was accompanied by a piano campus project touched the lives of youth and staff in a spirit of track recorded by Reverend Mickey Cloud, Trinity UMC’s Minister joyful giving unsurpassed by previous years. of Music. Following an introduction to Operation Christmas Child Following the shoe box dedication, staff and volunteers sorted, during our first Wednesday October MCH chapel service, project counted, and tucked extra goodies into the children’s gift leaders prayerfully undertook this year’s campaign. The goal was boxes. Inspired creativity was evident among the beautifully to translate this project into an empathy-building tool, hopefully decorated boxes displaying doves, flowers, gingerbread men, transforming youths’ hearts, contributing to their personal crosses, and Christmas stars. Our CAB (Changing Attitudes and Behavior) program staff Mrs. Gates, and Erin Rockett held a competition among their units for the youth to decorate and fill gift boxes, celebrating the winning unit with a pizza party. Ms. Taquana Joseph, Everett House Supervisor, reports that her youths’ generosity inspired staff. As a group they shopped, wrapped gifts, sang, made cards, and shared motivational girl talk. Vaughan youth and staff contributed to the shoe box gifts and created individualized handmade cards for their gift recipients. Life Skills, Recreation, PRDM, and OWL department staff all made special contributions to this year’s shoe box drive.

Numerous hearts were touched, and most youth, along with campus staff, contributed personal funds to buy shoe box gifts. As they learned from Operation Christmas Child programming about impoverished and disastrous living conditions faced by millions around the world, youth inquired about buying groceries, schoolbooks, bicycles, and of becoming pen pals for the anticipated gift recipients. They were relieved to learn that along with their gifts, Samaritan’s Purse and many other humanitarian organizations do attend to these needs.

MCH’s Operation Christmas Child’s influence reached beyond the walls of MCH into the homes of staff’s family. Residential therapist Lori Allen enlisted her four-year old son to assist with shoe box gift preparation this year. Upon learning that the shoe box was likely to be a child’s only gift, he wanted to fill the buggy with items for his special new friend somewhere across the globe. One Vaughn House Shoebox entries

www.lmch.org 12 Help-Portrait The Louisiana Tech University Photo Club and Art 173 classes in participation with the National campaign Help Portrait recently photographed our residents of the Ruston campus. Help Portrait is a project in which photographers give of their skills and resources to photograph those who would not normally be able to afford portraits of their own. On December 12, 2009 photographers worldwide united using their time, skills, and equipment to give back to their communities. This is a movement of both professional and amateur photographers from all backgrounds hoping to make a difference during the holiday season.

Help-Portrait was formed by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart. “December 12th is about helping people who never imaginged having their portrait made. Kids who don’t have their own families, those in need at children’s hospitals here and abroad, single moms, the elderly, the homeless or even your own neighbor. This is about giving pictures, not taking them. It’s about building relationships in your own community and giving hope,” shares Cowart. So, in the spirit of giving, the group from Louisiana Tech came to our campus on Saturday, December 12th, and spent the day photographing our 106 residents. The pictures will be printed and returned to each participant for them to keep and have as their own.

The staff and youth of LMCH sincerely thank all of the photographers and assistants who made this very special day happen.

Dr. Robert W. Flournoy, Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

The greatest two words in fundraising are “Thank You!” We cannot thank you enough for your faithful support in 2009.

Many non-profit agencies experienced less than usual giving in 2009. The national economy was the major culprit, plus the uncertainty factor concerning our wars in the Middle East and the health care debate. However, our faithful financial friends kept on giving and our total 2009 contributions were $1,298,863 – an incredible amount!!

You believe in what we are doing to help the abused and neglected youth of our state: ages 10-17 and it shows BIG TIME. Give yourself a “big pat on the back”. We could not be where we are without your prayerful support and encouragement.

I wish I could personally visit with each of you and thank you for your steadfast support. Our children know Doug Hall and I spend a lot of time on the road and away from the Home, but we believe in building lasting relationships with each donor. You are extremely important to our Mission.

Wow! How blessed we are to have such wonderful friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Keeping Up With Jones 5K Race

The rain and very cold weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of this race event! Over 100 runners and walkers participated and everyone seemed to have a great time. The Jones Physical Therapy staff did an excellent job of putting everything together, and race participants benefited from extra door prizes which were left over from the Methodist Home Golf Tournament which was rained out (twice!) in previous weeks. Proceeds from this event benefited our Methodist Children’s Home of Greater New Orleans, as well as local Boy Scout organizations. We are so grateful for this generous support by Paul Jones and his dedicated staff. This was the First Annual “Keeping Up With Jones” race, and we wish them many more years of success. Doug Hall, Brandi Shephard, and Ariane Guercia after the race.

The staff at Jones Physical Therapy presented a check for $1250 to the Methodist Children’s Home with proceeds from the “Keeping up with Jones” 5K /1mile fun run held on November 21st in Madisonville. Greetings!

October brought a greatly anticipated 30th annual Golf Tournament. Sadly, after two attempts to hold it, this year’s tournament was finally canceled due to inclement weather in October and Hurricane Ida. Words cannot express the hard work and true commitment from the golf committee members and volunteers as they attempted to reschedule the tournament in November. Thank you to the sponsors and golfers for their understanding and support through donations. Aside from golf, Go Saints Go has been the theme throughout the building! Another wonderful thank you to Charlie’s Saints Marching Club for donating season tickets to the Saints games. Also in October, our youth had a wonderful trip to Global Wildlife Center in Folsom, LA. Thank you to Munholland UMC for sponsoring the trip. The youth also enjoyed various events and activities, such as the Mandeville Wooden Boat festival; thank you to St. Timothy’s UMC Missions for providing tickets. Also, a special thank you to Aldersgate UMC for inviting our youth to participate in their annual Trunk-or-Treat. November brought our first annual fashion show. The youth had a blast walking down the runway in new outfits donated by Old Navy. Also in November, the UMW group of St. Matthew’s UMC treated our youth to an ice cream social. Many of our youth were able to spend Thanksgiving with family and previous foster families. We are thankful to Victory Fellowship Church and St. Timothy’s UMC for opening their doors to youth and staff for wonderful Thanksgiving meals.

December brought Christmas Tree decorating contests, prayer chains, and an overwhelming support from the community and churches. Youth enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Concert at St. Timothy’s UMC and a wonderful play called the Christmas Tale. The girls had the opportunity to watch the Nutcracker Play thanks to Ballet Apetrei for the tickets. Thank you to DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) for sponsoring a great Christmas Party, and for individual and hall gifts. Victory Fellowship Church also invited our youth and staff to their annual Christmas party, where they enjoyed great food and received gifts. The last Christmas Party has become an annual tradition. Kristy Collins and her family have opened their home to our youth and staff for the last three years. Youth and staff enjoyed a fun filled day of activities, food, and a visit from Santa himself. Bush UMC sponsored a Winter Ice Cream Social. We were amazed at how beautiful Christmas was this year. God’s work was seen in so many ways; through gifts, donations, and acts of kindness. The children were overwhelmed with their gifts from various organizations and churches. The children were adopted by various individuals, churches, and businesses that just wanted to be known as Secret Santa. Our thanks go to the many United Methodist Churches across the state that opened their hearts to us during this holiday season.

In His Service,
