  • Patti Stiles

  • Amanda Bolt Phd Thesis
Amanda Bolt PhD Thesis Abstract This thesis has set out to understand what is happening when impro is prac5sed as a performance form and ask whether impro is a subversive performance prac5ce at odds with the dominant order as described by Foucault. The research ques5ons are whether or not performance that is improvised in the moment can be seen as ‘other’ to authored or devised theatre prac5ces in the same way that woman can be seen as ‘other’ to the male norm. This prac5ce-led-research has isolated and analysed themes emerging from the prac5ce of impro using methods of ac5on research and grounded theory applied to data collected from interviews with female impro prac55oners as well as the researcher’s own experiences of prac5sing impro. The resul5ng themes that have been discovered are those of marginality, playfulness and communality. Victor Turner and Mikhail Bakh5n’s no5ons of the liminal, the ludic and communitas have been mapped onto these themes and the phrase ‘liminal ludic communitas’ has been developed to refer to the feelings of well-being that are generated when performers prac5ce impro. The research has discovered that impro, paradoxically, both subverts and asserts the dominant order. The form of impro, whereby performances are co- created playfully in the space and 5me of the present without authorship or artefact, subverts the dominant order of produc5on and consump5on whilst at the same 5me the character iden55es and stories that form the content of the improvisaons tend to assert the dominant order through cliché and

SCENES THAT MATTER – PATTI STILES 16 hours, level: advanced Language: English, Italian translation Max: 16 students Please note: this workshop uses subject material and language that may be confronting and difficult for some people. Workshop description: We live in a complex, complicated and extraordinary world. Humans are capable of the most amazing heroic and horrific actions. What one person may see as rational and necessary another sees as an act of prejudice or violence. Our values, views, morality and beliefs colour our interpretation. Improvisational theatre can provoke the audience to question their own beliefs by shining a light on stories from a different point of view. Where the unimaginable becomes understandable and the wrong may seem right. Improvisers are often afraid to engage in the stories that reflect life around us. This workshop challenges participants to play scenes based on the dark and light sides of humanity. Patti’s comments: This workshop is quite an interesting one especially for people who have only thought of improvisation as comedic or have only played in a comedic style. It does focus on some difficult material like rape, abuse, serial killers. However the scenes are crafted in a way where we can raise issues and ask questions without being insensitive. It is useful if the students have a strong base of scene work skills. Bio: Patti has an infectious enthusiasm for improvisation. Patti’s work as a performer and coach is anchored in the philosophy and discipline of improvisation technique. Trained first hand by ground- breaking “Impro” teacher, Keith Johnstone at the Loose Moose Theatre Company, Patti not only knows “how”, but understands “why”, which is the difference between being taught a few games and learning to improvise.
