Read Aof the New Coronavirus, Alongside Multiple Declarations of a National and Worldwide Emergency, We Shiver in Fear
JUNE 2020 CHAPLAINS: On the Front Line of Service THE CUT OF THE RELIGIOUS LIBERTY HIS HANDS AND FEET COURAGE DIAMOND IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC IN QUARANTINE IN THE STORM vantagepoint A Statement to the Fearful s national and jurisdictional leaders and the Centers for Disease Control and Preven- tion urge people to stay home and maintain social distance to combat the spread Aof the new coronavirus, alongside multiple declarations of a national and worldwide emergency, we shiver in fear. In the presence of this frightening pandemic that dominates news-media outlets and personal agendas, one cannot help experiencing a strange mel- ancholy sweeping in its scope of influence. We experience the prompting to succumb to a fearful or pessimistic view of life’s possibilities, fueled by nervousness surrounding the possibility of dying from COVID-19. Much of the mania we see around us threatens to erode our belief in a Supreme Being who is in charge of everything. In a sense, the frightening times in which we live are eroding the God factor in our lives. However, when we look at the situation from God’s perspective, there is joy, because God stood out on nothingness and spoke humanity into existence. Can you see the excitement of God as He established our first parents in a beautiful home with autonomy to choose to do His will or their own? Can’t you feel the eagerness of God to bring relief to the only , D.Min., Ph.D. Ron C. Smith creation of His that has fallen? President of the Southern Union Conference This pandemic should not heighten our pessimism or fear. -

An American Blue Zone the Longevity Oasis in Southern California
An American Blue Zone The Longevity Oasis in Southern California MARGE JETTON BARRELED DOWN theSan Bernardino Freeway in her rootbeer-col- ored Cadillac Seville. Peering from behind dark sunshades, her head barely cleared the steering wheel. She was late for one of the several volunteer commitments she had that day, and she calmly but firmly goosed the Caddy’s throttle to move it along. It was early on a Friday morning, and Marge had already accomplished quite a lot. She had walked a mile, lifted weights, and eaten her oatmeal breakfast. “I don’t know why God gave me the privilege of living so long,” she said, pointing to herself. “But look what he did!” Marge, born September 29, 1904, is one of some 9,000 Seventh-day Adventists who live in and around Loma Linda, California, 60 miles east of Los Angeles. For the past half century, members of this community, whose faith endorses healthy living, have participated in a groundbreaking health and dietary study of Californians over the age of 25. The results of this study hold promising clues to another remarkable fact about these Adventists: As a group they currently lead the nation in longest life expectancy. Marge Jetton, I decided, was the Adventist poster girl. She had sucked me into the whirlwind of her 100-year-old orbit an hour earlier at the Plaza Place hair salon just out- side of Loma Linda. For the past 20 years, Marge has kept an 8 a.m. Friday appointment with stylist Barbara Miller. “You’re late!” Marge shouted as I burst through the door at 8:25. -

Judas paid a premium for the upper room where Jesus and his fellow disciples gathered to celebrate the Passover. According to old manuscripts, landlords charged oversized rents at the times of the great feasts in Jerusa- lem. The thirteen probably felt grateful that they had such a large and conve- nient room. Later it would hold 120 as they waited for the Spirit. But, the landlord did not provide room service. Not that he offered no amenities. Inside the door, he had placed a large pitcher full of water, a basin, and a towel. With no servants waiting on them, the twelve overlooked the niceties of the moment and simply made no use of the water. Did they remember Mary who had washed Jesus’ feet with her tears? Ap- Ron C. Union Conference Within hours, Jesus would promise them the Comforter. If they would ever become the salt of the Earth and the light of the world, they would have to serve one another as the Spirit would soon serve them.
