The Railway Magazine - The Railway Magazine The Railway Series is a series of children's books about the railways of the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were created by the Reverend W. Awdry was reluctant, The Railway Margaret persisted and The Railway the stories in a letter to Wilbert's mother, Lucy, who replied that she knew the author Michael Barsley and asked that the stories be sent to her so she could forward them to him. At Margaret's insistence, Wilbert did so. Barsley's attempts to find a publisher were unsuccessful, so he showed the stories to his agent, Edith Ray Gregorson, who liked them and agreed to pursue the matter further. In October, Ward wrote to say that the stories The Railway be published as one book entitled " The Three Railway Engines ", but that he required rough sketches The Railway his The Railway to base his pictures on and a fourth story to finish The Railway the book. While Awdry was annoyed at the requests, since Ward had already rejected his drawings, he agreed and wrote "Edward, Gordon and Henry". Awdry, while happy to see his book in print, was The Railway in the illustrations by William Middleton. After the publication of the book, Christopher wanted a model of Gordon; but this could not be done. Instead, Awdry made a model of a tank engine from odds and ends, painted it blue and gave it to Christopher as a Christmas present. Christopher christened the model engine Thomas. Then Christopher requested stories about Thomas and these stories would be published as Awdry's second and most famous book, Thomas The Railway Tank Engine. After Thomas the Tank Engine, Awdry was finished with writing any more books. However, due to popular demand, Awdry pressed onward. By the time Awdry stopped writing inThe Railway Series numbered The Railway books. Christopher subsequently added sixteen more books to the series, including the later two posthumous releases. The last book Thomas and his Friends was published in to commemorate Wilbert's century, particularity in the last story Centenary. And it was reverted to the original state in Christopher still wanted to write stories for children, so he founded Sodor Enterprises in with his wife, Diana Awdry. He offered the publisher the reprints of The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railwaysand offered to buy the copyright of this book, but were denied. From toannuals were written by the Rev. Awdry and from to by Christopher Awdry. In some cases, these stories expanded upon earlier Railway Series books. There have been several Railway Series-related books published which were written The Railway the Awdrys. These books mainly feature the Island of Sodor, dealing with its history, geography and industry in far greater depth than could ever be discussed in the Railway Series stories themselves.     The Awdry Connection with the Talyllyn Railway. The Rev. Wilbert Awdry inherited an interest in railways from his father, the Rev. Vere Awdry, and together with his brother George, became a keen railway modeller. His first book in what was to become “The Railway Series” had been published in 1945, and by 1951 he had written four more. In February that year, someone knowing his interests, sent him an article which had appeared in the Birmingham Mail entitled “EIGHT MILES OF RAILWAY TO PLAY WITH – AND REAL TRAINS - FOR £1 A YEAR”. That railway was the Talyllyn Railway, and Wilbert’s interest was aroused sufficiently to apply for membership of the newly formed Preservation Society: his receipt was numbered 79. Coincidentally, Wilbert had a distant cousin Frank who lived in Tywyn. They had never met, but Wilbert and George had visited Frank’s sisters in Clevedon, Somerset, and had heard stories about the ‘somewhat wayward little railway’ in Tywyn. In August 1952 Wilbert, together with his wife Margaret, son Christopher and daughters Veronica and Hilary, visited the Talyllyn Railway for the first time. On arrival, Wilbert and Christopher went straight to Wharf Station to introduce themselves to Tom Rolt, the General Manager. Wilbert volunteered to do duty as a Guard during the second week of his holiday. The most memorable incident of the week was when he left the Refreshment Lady behind in the Booking Office at Abergynolwyn – the first of many events that Wilbert was to enshrine in future books. It was almost inevitable that, having become a regular visitor and volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, Wilbert should find a way to write about it in his books.

    Transports of Delight: Pastoral, Nostalgia and Railway Travel in Post-WWII Genre Fiction Samuel John Sheppard MA by Research University of York English and Related Literature November 2020 Abstract In the mid-twentieth century, Britain’s railways underwent a range of significant developments. A transport network that, in many ways, had not changed substantially since the Edwardian period, was transformed by events such as widespread route closures, a diesel revolution, and the growing popularity of private motoring. This paper aims to examine how the significance of railways in British literature of this period changed as a result, with particular focus upon two areas of genre fiction: crime and detective fiction, and children’s literature. I am particularly concerned with the ideals of heritage and preservation which emerged in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, and how these encouraged the presentation of railways in a more sentimental light than had previously been seen.
