Brown IV (21) TEAM LEADERS Previously on Moundbuilder Basketball MEN’S BASKETBALL PICKS UP ROAD WIN OVER SAINT MARY LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -The Southwestern College men’s basketball team was victorious over the Saint Mary Spires on Thurs- day evening, winning by a score of 79-72 in the Ryan Sports Center. The Spires held a sizeable lead through the first ten-plus minutes of action, seeing it grow to as many as nine at 23-14 with just over halfway to go in the first half. From there, the Builders charged back in less than three minutes to even things up at 23-23, eventually capping off their scoring run at 13-0 and a 27-23 advantage. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the way, with the Spires eventually catching up and regaining the lead before a late basket from Southwestern knotted the game once more heading into halftime. The Moundbuilders shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half but endured five more made three-pointers from the Spires that helped offset the overall shooting disparity. Another scoring outburst benefitted the Builders to start the second half, posting a second 13-0 run to turn a tie game into a double-digit lead. The margin remained in double figures, getting as high as 15 points and only ducking below the ten-point threshold once over the course of the next 14 minutes. Saint Mary successfully forced some late-game turnovers and inched closer, eventually shrinking the deficit to five with 30 seconds left, but Southwestern countered with making 8-8 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes, with six of those coming in the last half-minute of action. The Spires ran out of time as the Builders fended off their late rally en route to the seven-point victory. As a team, Southwestern saw a balanced offensive attack and finished the contest shooting 52.5 percent from the field. Four members of the team hit double figures, while seven total scored at least five points. Jake Haertl (JR/Denver, Colo.) and Steele Gaston-Chapman (FR/Wichita, Kan.) both tallied a team-high 14 points, while Braylon Steen (JR/Little Rock, Ark.) added 11.
