The Queen walked down the aisle as a 21-year-old princess on November 20, 1947. She is the first British monarch ever to celebrate a platinum wedding anniversary. She is also the UK's longest-ever reigning monarch. The couple celebrated their special day with close family and friends at a small private party at one of their royal homes - Windsor Castle, west of London. They marked the occasion with the release of a set of official portraits. Britain's post office has also celebrated the historic landmark with a special set of commemorative postage stamps. The royal couple first met as teenagers during World War II. Prince Philip was the son of a Greek prince. He gave up his title to become a British citizen to marry the then Princess Elizabeth. Reports say that prior to the wedding, he told his future mother-in-law that he had, "fallen in love completely and unreservedly" with her daughter. He once stated that: "My job first, second and last, is never to let the Queen down." The Queen has always relied on her husband, whom she described as her "rock". Jennie Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, explained that humor helped their longevity. She said: "A big part of what has kept them going over so many years is the fact they can share a joke together." Women still face much greater pressure than men regarding their physical appearance and body image. How they look mat- ters, especially with regards to newsreaders and broad- casters. We investigated the opinions of journalists and audiences about the appearance of women newsreaders and found that physical appearance plays a significant role for female presenters. Also, our research suggests that where women are glamorised they are belittled in terms of intelligence and their abilities. The audience for television news are aware of the narrow versions of beau- ty that are being presented and note that they would like to see more diverse representations of women reading the news. Keywords: newsreaders, gender, sexualisation, age, representation, beauty, television news, discourse. Aims This study investigates the physical appearance of male and female newsreaders in Eng- land with reference to age, credibility and industry response. We argue that television news implicitly promotes stereotypical physical attractiveness, particularly for women. Recent research demonstrates that television is still the main source of news for many older people (Clausen, 2004 cited in Weibel, Wissmath and Groner, 2008, p.466) and hence forms part of the discourses that permeate society (Giles, 2009, p.318).     ON SCREEN AND ON AIR TALENT AN ASSESSMENT OF THE BBC’S APPROACH AND IMPACT A REPORT FOR THE BBC TRUST APPENDIX II – TALENT TRACKING BY OLIVER & OHLBAUM ASSOCIATES APRIL 2008 1 APPENDIX II – TALENT TRACKING The objective was to find how the sources of the various network broadcasters’ talent differ, by genre and in some cases over time. Presenter loyalty to broadcasters would also be shown as a result of the ‘talent tracking’. A BARB database consisting of every strand aired on BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, C4 and Five in 2007 was used to select the relevant strands. Strands with less than 300 annual broadcast hours were not considered for analysis. Strands were chosen from genres that have a strong dependence on the quality and audience appeal of their presenter or lead performer. Hence the genres chosen were: • Entertainment, consisting of sub genres ‘Chat Shows’, ‘Quiz/Game Shows’, ‘Family Shows’ and ‘Panel Shows’ • Factual Documentary, consisting of sub genres ‘History’, ‘Human Interest’, ‘Natural History’, ‘Science/ Medical’ • Lifestyle, consisting of sub genres ‘Cooking’, ‘DIY’ and ‘Homes’ • Comedy, consisting of sub genres ‘Situation Comedy’ and ‘Other Comedy’ The talent analysis would then be taken form these selected strands. In the cases where talent appeared for the same channel on more than one strand, the talent was still only considered once for tracking analysis. If talent appeared on more than one channel, then their tracking would appear in all relevant channel profiles. Various different web-based sources were used to best map out the talent’s career. www.wikipedia.org and www.tv.com have career résumés on most of the selected talent; for a deeper and more comprehensive analysis, www.imdb.com and www.spotlight.com were used as reliable programme and talent databases.

Yet at the age of 55, Moira Stuart has been unceremoniously axed as a BBC news presenter, prompting widespread accusations of ageism and sexism at the heart of the corporation. Since her ‘removal’ was announced last week, demands have been growing for her reinstatement. Broadcasters who have added their distinguished voices to the clamour include John Humphrys, Andrew Marr, Michael Buerk, Michael Crick, Sue MacGregor, Sir Trevor McDonald and Jon Snow, while MPs yesterday condemned the decision as a “disgrace”. If an employment tribunal were to find the BBC guilty of discriminating against Miss Stuart on the grounds of age or sex, it could order her reinstatement. Although she does not want to speak publicly about her predicament, she is said by close friends to be “very disappointed” at the decision to remove her from presenting the news during Marr’s Sunday AM programme. It has appalled viewers and broadcasters in equal measure. Radio 4 Today programme anchorman and TV Mastermind host John Humphrys was among those who suggested the BBC was guilty of discriminating against older women. He said: “It may be pure coincidence but there do seem to be remarkably few women with a few lines on their faces presenting TV news or current affairs compared with the wrinkled men.” Andrew Marr said: “Whilst it’s up to the BBC bosses to decide who reads the news, I have never worked with as charismatic, sharp and beautiful a colleague as Moira.
