Clark College Commencement June 18, 2020 Letter from the President To the Class of 2020 Clark College was founded in 1933 during the depths of the Great Depression. It was created because people in Southwest Washington believed in the power of education to help create change and to make our community a better place. Today, almost 90 years later, the college is still driven by that same founding belief. Class of 2020, you are now part of that tradition—you now will become proof that education is an investment in the future of not just one individual, but of our entire community. I know you will prove that our belief is well-founded. Already, you have accomplished so much. In my 40 years in higher education, I cannot think of another graduating class who has had to overcome the obstacles you have. However you began your career at Clark College, you never could have foreseen that it would conclude during a global pandemic—not to mention the many other academic, financial, and personal challenges you have overcome during your educational journey. These experiences have taught you so much—not just the technical and academic skills learned in class, but also resilience, determination, and compassion for others. I know that, as you take these newfound skills out into the world beyond Clark College, you will make our community stronger, wiser, and kinder.
