  • Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. • Swedish Soul Funk Grooves - Patriks Soul/Funk Music
Swedish soul funk grooves - Patriks soul/funk music http://www.soulfunkmusic.com/swedish.htm Swedish soul and funk 1979-2005 Sweden is best known for Abba that conquered the world in the late 70s with catchy disco influenced melodies. Even though the melodies are "eternal" in many respects Sweden got more to offer. In this introduction to Swedish soul and funk and jazz from 1979 to 1990, with a brief overview of the 90s as well, I will give you a short history and most of all my recommendations to you of the best rare Swedish soul and funk grooves! Music history Sweden got a rather limited amount of more prominent composers during the history. The most well known names during the period 1700-1800 are baroque composer Johan Helmich Roman and the troubadour Carl Michael Bellman. Between 1800 and 1900 Sweden had many names but no one reached higher levels of recognition outside Sweden. From 1900 until 1945 completely new genres got a foothold on Swedish soil and jazz became one of the most important ones. After the end of the second world war the jazz influences from USA got even stronger and during the following decades after 1945. Sweden have since the 50s produced outstanding jazz impressionists and vocalists that achieved much attention both in Sweden and on the American scene with names like vocalist Alice Babs, clarinetist Åke Hasselgård, that was one of the first to play bop, pianist Bengt Hallberg and altoist Arne Domnerus. Many of these played or sang with the greatest names in America.

Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K.
