The loop around both shores of Lake Pepin is one of most scenic and enjoyable drives in the Midwest. Go south from Lake City on Hwy. 61 to Wabasha and cross the Mississippi River to Nelson and drive north on Hwy. 35, through the picturesque small villages of Pepin, Stockholm, Maiden Rock, Bay City, and Hager City. From there, take the bridge back across the river to Red Wing and take Hwy. 61 south back to Lake City. Depending on how many stops you make, this tour can last 2-3 hours or the entire day. Along the way you’ll find great shopping, dining, scenery and outdoor activities. You can also extend the loop somewhat by continuing on Hwy. 61 past Wabasha to Kellogg and then back to Wabasha, cross over the river to Nelson and then go south on Hwy. 35 to Alma and then back up river.

Revel in Lake Pepin’s stunning fall colors on the Great River Road in bluff country! From Lake City, take Hwy. 61 through Frontenac and Red Wing. Turn left on Hwy. 19 through rolling farmland and the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest to Vasa. Cannon Falls Vasa Vasa 52 Originally called “Mattson’s Settlements” for Hans Mattson a former Minnesota Secretary of State. Founded in 1853, it’s one 19 of Minnesota’s few unchanged Swedish settlements. Continue on 61 Hwy. 19 to Cannon Falls. Cannon Falls Red Wing This dreamy river town has stately homes, a quaint business district and Riverside Park right at the falls of the Cannon River. From here take Hwy. 52 south to Zumbrota. Wacouta Zumbrota Zumbrota Home to the only surviving covered bridge in the state. It was constructed in 1869 and was one of the major travel links Frontenac between Dubuque, Iowa and St. Paul. Head east on Hwy. 60 to Zumbro Falls. 60 Zumbro Falls Oak The drive east toward the river features rugged valleys that rise to Center bluff tops and farmland, with the occasional view of Lake Pepin. 63 Continue on Hwy. 60 to Wabasha. Zumbro Falls Lake City Wabasha Named after the Sioux Indian chief Wah-pah-sha, this historic Camp steamboat port is one of Minnesota’s oldest communities. The Lacupolis business district is included on the National Register of Historic Reads Places. From here, take Hwy. 61 upriver to Reads Landing. Dumfries Landing Reads Landing This once-thriving river trading post is a superb place to view bald eagles, especially in winter. Take some time to stop at the Wabasha Wabasha County Historical Society Museum as well. Lake City Your last leg upriver on Hwy. 61 back to Lake City offers some of the most panoramic views of Lake Pepin and the bluffs.
