Attenborough’s delivery has certainly been aided in recent years by some spectacular advances in filmmaking processes. And, for a man of 87, there’s no fear involved when it comes to embracing the very latest technological science.

“I’ve always been very excited about what 3D can mean for wildlife programmes. Of course, it has to add something to the experience and to the understanding, and at the minute I think people find it a bit © REX/BAFTA off-putting because they have to wear

David Attenborough, winner of the 1970 Desmond Davis Award glasses. But as soon as the technology presented by HRH Princess Anne (President of the Society of means you don’t need the glasses, I think Film and Television Arts) at the Awards Ceremony in 1971. 3D will take off, and I will certainly continue to make films in 3D because the potential to enhance the experience is there. Five Sir David Attenborough wildlife programmes that defined an era The World About Us (13 years from 1969) “And of course the science that is going on (28 years from 1977) behind the scenes, so to speak, is even more Life on Earth (1979 – took three years to make and included exciting. No one knew what DNA was when groundbreaking footage of the planet) I first started out, yet our learning curve is The Private Life of Plants (1995 – the first use of time-lapse photography to track the growth of plants) sharpening all the time, and with that we are unravelling the clues of evolution itself. (2006 – the most expensive documentary series ever made) There’s a realisation that genetics, which I was taught at school, is now only part of the story. Indeed, you have now epigenetics, which Of course, perfecting that delivery over explains how characteristics can become the past 62 years has been a pleasure for involved with genes. This stuff was all hearsay Attenborough – he’s travelled the world for his when I was a student, yet these things are art ... indeed, it was recently supposed he might changing fast, and changing still. I mean, be the most travelled man on the planet. if you felt the story of life is all there in a book and it ends at chapter 25, how boring that “Most travelled? No. Best travelled? would be. By the time you’re at chapter Perhaps,” he laughs, “but then that all depends 17 you might think, ‘what am I going to do what floats your boat!” with the rest of my life?’ But it’s not like that: it’s a continuous passage of discovery.” Certainly, with every venture to the Kalahari, every trek across the barren frozen icescapes Of course, Attenborough’s greatest fear is of Antarctica, and upon each sighting of the not in reaching the final chapter, it’s in finding smallest spiders on the Amazon rainforest floor, a sequel to the story of planet Earth that Attenborough’s calming, informative tones is rather less palatable than its predecessor. have allowed viewers to marvel at the miracles of the natural world. “We’re losing plants and species we didn’t even know existed. There’s a bird called the “And that has been the biggest pleasure of kakapo – a giant flightless parrot, which can all,” he continues. “It’s the telling of the story that be found in New Zealand. I think we were down really excited me, right from the start. Academia to just three females; that’s terrifying, although is such a closed bracket, yet broadcasting it’s believed we can protect it now. offered the opportunity to say ‘look what I’ve found ... come and enjoy it with me’. “Climate change is also big news, and a huge problem; yet population growth tops the lot. “And yes, there was a lot of responsibility After all, there will be 15 billion more people in that – the job determines you tell the truth living on the Earth by the year 2050, and that and give the facts as they really are. And it is is too many. There is only finite space and a responsibility I feel deeply. If you feel you nobody seems prepared to do anything know about the natural world and you have about it. We are heading for a disaster of the medium to speak out, then you must do so.” epic proportions – it frightens me.

“I also loved the birds – the Lanner falcon being something so fast and graceful, yet a fearsome predator.”

Attenborough’s own fears have rarely been realised when in contact with the animal world, although he admits that being charged by a rhino when in a stationary jeep is a life

event he’d rather not relive. The rest though, © Adam Scott / BBC Worldwide / UK TV he’d grab again if he had the opportunity.

“I realise I’m getting near the end. I love to read, but I listen to music less these days – I don’t want to be transported elsewhere... I want to stay in the moment. It means more to me than ever before.

“But I’m still looking for new projects... at the moment I’m reading a biography of an extraordinary Newcastle wood engraver called Thomas Bewick, who was a very important figure in ornithology in the 19th century and “Slowly, very slowly, there are moves for wrote one of the great books on British birds. the major world powers to get together and You should look it up some time.” strategise an answer, but with every economic crisis, every election, the discussions over And so the life of Sir David Attenborough, the are put to one side. the communicator, continues... We surely need to do more.”

Still, Attenborough remains buoyant. It seems that, for this incredible man, any chink in his armoury can be mended by the prowess of an elegant python, the camouflaged cunning of a chameleon, or the stealth of a stick insect – all of which have © Humble Bee Films / UK TV been kept as ‘pets’ by the naturalist.

“I had the lot at one stage,” he smiles. “Fish, parrots, monkeys – we were bringing them back to study them or because they were in need of medical attention, and many stayed with me.”

Of course, it’s only fitting to ask Sir David about his experiences with the flora and fauna of Arabia. Did the self-confessed fan of the African heartlands ever find similar natural beauty in the vast sweeping sands of our continent?

“Well, I think you have one of the most loyal, stubborn, and faithful creatures you might ever wish to meet,” he says, pointing to his right and a picture of a single-humped camel.

“You have to respect any animal that can go to lengths further than any other, and the camel is certainly capable of some incredible Look out for Sir David Attenborough’s second series feats of endurance.” of Natural Curiosities on Sky channel Eden.
