2. UNB dedication to Neil MacGill May 22

The Office of the VP Academic (Fredericton), with the residence community (RLCCS) and Neil MacGill's family and friends invite you to join us as we dedicate the Senior Common Room in McConnell Hall to Professor Emeritus Neil MacGill.

An integral member of the Residence Community for 39 years, Neil influenced the lives of generations of students. Neil was the first don in Neill House from 1961-1966 and the resident fellow in Bridges House from 1966-2000. He hosted weekly Bridges Forums which enhanced the learning environment for residence students; educating them on everything from the arts to social issues, academic research, and politics. As a philosophy professor, Neil took great pride in linking our residence community to our academic community. He is greatly missed and fondly remembered with respect and gratitude.

The University has approved the renaming of the Senior Common Room as Neil attended thousands of meetings in this room during his time in residence. Throughout his years in residence, he demonstrated great reverence for our traditions as well as a dedication to community life. Neil worked tirelessly toward ensuring that our community was a vibrant, educational, and spirited environment for students. Many of his initiatives and ideas became reality after great debates in the Senior Common Room.

A painting of Neil, as well as several of his plaques and a copy of his Bridges House Forum records will now find a home in this room. Please join us on May 22 at 2 PM as we celebrate Neil’s contributions to UNB.

Editor’s note: Neil MacGill passed away on October 17, 2007. In addition to the tremendous contributions he made to the university community, Neil also gave generously to the arts community. Neil served three full terms as board member of the Fredericton Arts Alliance, as well as serving on the boards of Symphony New Brunswick and Theatre New Brunswick, among his many other volunteer contributions.

3. Kathleen Gorey-McSorley concert fundraiser May 22

Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Charlotte Street Arts Center, 7:30 PM.

Kathleen Gorey-McSorley competed in Mid-Atlantic Fleadh in New York in April. A Fleadh is a traditional Irish Music competition. She placed second in the “15 years and under slow aires section.” This is significant in that she is only 13 years old. By virtue of her second place ranking she qualified to move on to compete at the "All Ireland Fleadh" in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland in August.

In an effort to raise some of the money needed for this trip, Kathleen will be putting on a concert at the Charlotte Street Arts Center at 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 22. She will be joined in concert by Carolyn Holyoke, the Celtic band Brollachan, Dr. Jennifer Russell and the Cottagers, vocalist Becka Thiessen and guitarist Gerry Pugh.

Come out to have a great time supporting Kathleen as she makes her way to Ireland. This is a wonderful family event with exceptional talent.

4. Nasty Shadows Theatre Co. presents Geography Of A Horse Dreamer May 22 - 24

Nasty Shadows Theatre Co. presents Sam Shepard's Geography Of A Horse Dreamer (A Mystery In Two Acts) from Thursday, May 22 through Saturday, May 24, 8 PM nightly in Memorial Hall, UNB, Fredericton. Tickets available at the door: $10 adult / $7student.

Geography Of A Horse Dreamer is the story of Cody, a dreamer. He’s being held hostage by two would-be gangsters, Santee and Beaujo, because he dreams the winners at the horse races and their eccentric boss gets rich from the betting. At the start of the play, however, we find Cody in the midst of "The Slump" in a low class hotel room, handcuffed to the bed with no chance to escape, his luck seemingly run out. With the arrival of the boss, Fingers, and his mysterious employ, The Doctor, Cody is pulled further and further into a very strange world where neckbones are carried as good luck charms – he needs to find a way out...and fast.

2 The players, consisting of UNB/STU alumni and faculty, are Nicholas Cole, Mike Coughlan, Andrew Estabrooks, Len Falkenstein, Andrew Jones, Robert Moore, Matthew Spinney and Jordan Trethewey. The production is directed by Scott Shannon.

Nasty Shadows Theatre Co. was founded in the summer of 1999. While working with small groups of actors and technicians from both Fredericton and/or Saint John, one of the Company’s main goals has been to provide audiences in both cities with thought-provoking, intimate, and immediate theatrical creations with a focus on stripped down, minimalist productions.

With thanks to TheatreUNB for their support.

Events

May 24, 1 PM - Romeo and Juliet (Ballet) London's Royal Ballet at Covent Garden Duration: 195 min (including intermission)

The Royal Ballet's production of Romeo and Juliet is a major event with the much anticipated pairing of extraordinary prima ballerina Tamara Rojo and superstar Carlos Acosta in the title roles.

Kenneth MacMillan's great interpretation of Shakespeare's enduring tragedy is one of the most popular works in The Royal Ballet repertory - and one of the greatest examples of 20th-century choreography. The setting is Renaissance Verona, where a chance meeting ignites a profound love between Romeo and Juliet, bringing with it first hope of uniting their families in peace, then misunderstanding, and finally tragedy and death. Prokofiev's music is an instantly recognizable classic of the modern repertory, here complemented by choreography of beauty and touching fluidity.

"Tamara Rojo must be the best Royal Ballet Juliet for a quarter century or more. Carlos Acosta is on equally fine form. A great performance!" - John Percival, The Stage

June 7, 1 PM - Tales of Beatrix Potter (Ballet) London's Royal Ballet at Covent Garden Duration: 110 min (including intermission)

A special performance for children of all ages or for those who are just young at heart! London's Royal Ballet Tales of Beatrix Potter brings the characters from her famous stories alive.

In 1971, Frederick Ashton choreographed Tales of Beatrix Potter for film. Two decades later, Anthony Dowell staged Ashton's choreography for The Royal Ballet, giving the company one of its more charming offerings. The production's ingenious use of scale when designing the sets and their spectacular costumes and masks quickly draws audiences in to the wondrous world of Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddleduck.

Only in The Royal Ballet's Tales of Beatrix Potter will you behold the delightful dancing naughty mice, see Pigling Bland and Pig-Wig perform a wonderful pig pas de deux, witness an overly excited Squirrel Nutkin leap, twirl and whirl around the stage and cheer as all of the much loved characters join in the glorious grand finale.

7 "Enchanting. If you want to connect with your inner child - or, even better, if you have a youngster in tow - then this is the show for you. How can you resist?" - Debra Craine, The Times

June 21, 1 PM - The Sleeping Beauty (Ballet) London's Royal Ballet at Covent Garden Duration: 125 min (including intermission)

Britain's Royal Ballet brings to the screen one of ballets most loved classics. The Sleeping Beauty combines, in a single work, all the charms and virtuosity that ballet has to offer.

This famous staging was created for The Royal Ballet in 1946, from the original 1890 Marius Petipa production in St. Petersburg. It was revived for the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet in 2006.

The Sleeping Beauty is led by two of The Royal Ballet's finest dancers; the beautiful Alina Cojocura stars as Princess Aurora and the dark and handsome Federico Bonelli stars as Prince Florimund. Tchaikovsky's glorious score for this beautiful ballet is played by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in London.

This ballet is a great showcase for Company's talents and a living milestone in its history, this Sleeping Beauty's style and visual splendour are unique to The Royal Ballet.

"The year's big ballet story is The Sleeping Beauty." - The Guardian
