Medical Information Medical services for Bay State Games participants are provided by professional volunteer medical personnel including Licensed Athletic Trainers and physicians from Children’s Hospital Boston, UMass Medical in Worcester, Mass General in Foxboro and Boston University Medical Center in Boston. Medical Personnel will be stationed at most venues prior to the start of each event. The medical staff's primary responsibility is to evaluate and manage injuries that occur during the games. Licensed Athletic Trainers are also available on site for pregame taping and treatment if needed.

ANY INJURY OR ILLNESS MUST BE REPORTED TO A MEDICAL STAFF MEMBER IMMEDIATELY. All medical staff will be readily identifiable by wearing a red Bay State Games medical staff shirt.

Water & Ice will be available at all competition venues. If heat conditions warrant, game length may be shortened or water breaks may be added. This decision will be made by game officials and medical staff based on current conditions. If there is visible lightning, play will be suspended and will resume 30 minutes after the last visible lightning strike.

Local emergency medical services are available to respond to ambulance calls at all sites. Bay State Games volunteer physicians are available during most high risk/contact sports and may be contacted for consultation through a medical staff member at each venue. If the ATC or other medical staff member feels a physician consult is needed, they will arrange this through the site medical coordinator if a physician is available. If a physician is unavailable, the may need to be transported to an area hospital. Unless the use of an ambulance is necessary, athletes/coaches are responsible for transporting athletes to the physician or hospital.

ATHLETES AND COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR NOTIFYING THE ATHLETIC TRAINER AT EACH COMPETITION SITE OF ANY KNOWN CONDITIONS WHICH MAY AFFECT THEIR ABILITY TO COMPETE. This must be done at each venue, each day, since medical coverage personnel is subject to change.

The volunteer medical staff for the Bay State Games will not be responsible for consequences resulting from unreported conditions or injuries.

The Bay State Games Medical Staff (including certified athletic trainers and doctors) has final approval for any injured athlete to return to competition. Clearances from physicians not affiliated with the Bay State Games are not accepted. Bay State Games will arrange for an athlete to be evaluated by one of our physicians to determine return to play status.
