• Our division has been strongly involved in the organization of Symposium 4: Electrochemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the present ISE Meeting. Organizers: Ezequiel Leiva(Argentina), Kim Daasbjerg(Danemark), Andrew Gewirth(USA), Flavio Maran(Italy), Roberto Salvarezza (Argentina), Mark Workentin (Canada).

This section is aimed at presenting the most relevant electrochemical achievements as well as current experimental and theoretical challenges in the area of generating, controlling, characterizing and exploiting nanosystems. The pivotal role of electrochemistry in the future development of the science of nanosystems will be stressed and discussed. The focus should be rather on science than on technology.

Main topics: • Nanoparticles • Self assembled monolayers • Biomimetic membranes modified and functionalized electrodes • Molecular electronics • Application of the electrochemical scanning-probe microscopy techniques • Molecular machines and devices • Nanoelectrodes • Computers Simulations of Nanostructuring Processes • Quantum mechanical calculations of self-assembled and Nanostructured Systems

Participants: 4 Keynote Lectures 4 invited young speakers 21 invited speakers Total oral presentations: 53. UK, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Argentina, Denmark, France, , Canada, USA, Switzerland, Japan, South Africa, Russian Federation, Australia, Estonia, Brazil, Romania. Total Poster presentations: ca 100 The assistance rate of the speakers was very close to 100 % (1 absence), and the audience remained strongly active until the end of the Meeting.

• Based on the quality of science, published papers, and other related matters, the Division also participated in the selection of the Vetter prize.

• Two candidates from divisional membership proposed to become members of the advisory board of Electrochimica Acta: Nenad Markovic and Wolfgang Schmickler.

• Suggestion of new ideas to improve the “Scientific Excellence of the ISE”.

• FUTURE ACTIVITIES: 59TH ANNUAL MEETING .OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ELECTROCHEMISTRY

Symposium 2 Sponsoring Division: Division 7, Physical Electrochemistry Molecular-Level Aspects of Interfacial Electrochemistry: State-of-the-Art, Spectroscopic Techniques and Theoretical and Computational Methods Organizers: Marc Koper (coordinator, Netherlands), Rafael Andreu(Spain), Gary Attard(UK), Enrique Herrero(Spain), Antonio Rodes(Spain)

This symposium focuses on molecular-level aspects of interfacial electrochemistry, emphasizing the application of state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with theoretical and computational methods such as molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory trying to correlate the behavior observed with well defined surfaces to that obtained for nanostructured electrodes. The symposium will place special emphasis on bridging electrochemistry and electrocatalysis with neighboring fields such as heterogeneous catalysis (both gas-phase and liquid phase) and bio-catalysis.

Topics: Time- and space-resolved molecular descriptions of double-layer phenomena , Reactivity, Electrocatalysis, Single crystal and nanostructured electrodes.

Divisional Meeting at Banff Center

Some items discussed during the divisional Meeting at Banff were: • Possible changes in the structure of the future ISE Meetings were discussed: One of the points was whether the Symposia should be spaced in time. Another one was the possibility of sharing some sessions during the Meetings It was also suggested that each division might address companies for financial support. The possibility of granting free exhibition points was also considered. • Organization of Summer Schools by the ISE • It was suggested that the institution of a new award should be proposed to the ISE: The Brian Conway award for Physical and Interfacial Electrochemistry. This award should be given annually to the most successful achievements in Physical Electrochemistry in recent years. It would consist of a monetary award of 1000 EU and a Medal. Division 7 and the Canadian Region would each contribute 500 EU from the Division 7 budget and the Canadian Region endowment respectively, and the cost of the medal would be paid for from the Canadian Region endowment.
