Reflection by — Saverio Grosso Dinner Plans hroughout Scripture, Jesus' choice of dinner compan- T ions set him apart from other observant Jews of his time. In first century Jewish culture, to dine together was to show a bond of fellowship and peace among those at the table. Observant Jews did not generally dine with foreigners and sinners. Yet, once again, Jesus breaks with cultural norms and chooses to honor the tax collector, Zacchaeus, by staying at his house. We know from last week that religious Jews despised tax collectors for aiding the Roman government and because tax collectors often got rich through extortion, piling up dishonest gain for themselves. We know from Luke's description that Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector; he was, in fact, the chief tax collector and a person of some wealth. So, in the eyes of a community there was no one lowlier! We also know that because he was short in stature, he needs to climb a tree in order to see Jesus. He couldn’t see what was happening and needed a better view, perhaps hoping to see Jesus heal someone or perform some miracle. Surely Zaccheus never expected what would follow and when Jesus passed by, the little man got quite a shock: “‘Zaccheus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.’” He quickly discovered that Jesus knew him, saw his determina- tion, and invited Himself for a visit. In his search for salvation, he humbled The Souls in Heaven assist us with himself by making a spectacle of himself by climbing a tree. He “came down quickly and works, prayer and participation in the received Him with joy.” For such an obvious sinner to be singled out for Eucharist. - Pope Francis a visit by Jesus was beyond remarkable. The crowd outside, however, didn’t think so! They grumbled and complained loud enough for Zacchaeus to hear. Yet rather than get angry with their judgment of him, he spoke directly to Jesus: “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I shall repay it four times over.” We can see that something profound happened in him between the time he climbed up the tree and the time he came down. A man seeking merely to see Jesus out of curiosity discovered that Jesus was seeking him. As a result, he had an instant conversion, and sought to make a repentance for his sin. Zacchaeus recognized that he needed God's merciful love and for- giveness, and his testimony included more than words. His change of heart resulted in a change of life, a change that the whole community could experience as genuine. This beautiful story reminds us of something we often forget - Jesus came to save sinners, not condemn them. Our interactions with others must preserve this ideal. Often, we are quick to judge, someone because they sinned or hurt us. However, we are reminded by this Gospel passage that sinners first need to hear something about Jesus that stirs up their curiosity - we can do this by showing that God loves and desires them. He sends us to call them to Him. And if we anchor our- selves in humility and love, they will see Jesus in our actions. And when they see how His love shaped us, perhaps then they will be ready for a change. Lord Jesus, come and stay with me. Fill my life with your peace, my home with your presence, and my heart with your praise. Help me to show kindness, mercy, and goodness to all, even to those who cause me ill-will or harm. 8
