First, the new Premier OD Strip: Last season our Prems won Cricket’s “Movember Contest”. The prize – a new OD strip and below is the result – a close collaboration between our leading players and administrators. Symbolism, apparently, hints at the Black Caps’ ‘91/92 World Cup Grey strip, Ian West’s nickname of “Peaches” for our Prems – which dates back to an interview he did a couple of seasons ago with our Skipper and a newly painted park bench. Bet the Water Boy’s Mum is pleased that Jacob did’t sit on that same park bench!

AND NOW THE GAME vs WAITAKERE And, again, many thanks to Craig Speakman for these photos

Bowling first wasn’t easy – start delayed because of wet slippery, runuups. 1. Rav was particularly affected. 2. Ganesh, less hindered by the damp, reduced his run-up, moved the ball considerably & hit the stumps spectacularly – as below:

Ganesh’s first of two , both skittled! First at 17, second at 50. Truly great photo, Craig!

Our offies – Skipper Dave (1.) & Mitch McCann (2.) – note copybook high actions. They showed great patience, slowed down the run scoring and tempted rash shots. Mitch enticed Challis, an NZ U19 rep. & well set, into giving Andy Lane a catch on the boundaty and

No rewards for Josh (1.), thaough he bowled a tight line and looked dangerous, Henry (2.) who added interesting variety with his leggies. Welcome back Henry and well done taking a difficult catch turning and running back in the deep . Not at all easy bowling in such damp conditions – slippery footings, a damp ball and Waitakere youngsters off on a bit of a flyer. Fletcher and Challis batted well but good, patient work by our bowlers dragged the initiative back and 226 was a very attainable target.

The chase - enter Ben Rainger, partnered by Jesse Simpson. Conditions now very different – run-ups dried out, a brisk wind to assist movement and a dry ball. Jesse left with the total at 15 – caught behind as he had been the previous game – but the two Ben’s knuckled down and quietly and sensibly batted us into a position of control. As the afternoon went on their dominance became more obvious and Ben Horne opened up with a succession of quite startling shots. Showing amazing confidence, Ben H played strokes all round the wicket – one moment driving straight, the next a reverse sweep. The following photos let a little of the story – Waitakere hardly knew if Ben was batting right handed or left and his 118 off just 72 balls speaks for itself. At the other end Ben R progressed in a very sound manner looking totally at home at the crease though late in his innings he was hit rather indelicately but ice (produced by the Coach and disposed of, later, by his Skipper) brought Ben to his feet and continued on to the victory. Before that, Ben H had holed out in the deep which allowed Mark Chapman a short cameo – Mark has been most unfortunate with injuries so it was great to see him back at the crease.

Opener Ben Rainger in full flow – 111 last week vs AUCC, 76* on Saturday vs Wailakere

Ben Horne – had Waitakere at sixes and sevens – right handed, left handed, right hand

And this one – Ben H reverse sweeping, a shot that cleared the point (sorry, now square leg) boundary (and the Scorers) by at least 30m

Premier Women’s Grade – Pearl Dawson Trophy T20 Championship at Lloyd Elsmore Park Not the most auspicious start last Saturday but it was a start as Parnell has not had a Premier Women’s team since 2010/11. T20 games scheduled in the day and Parnell’s first game against last season’s champions, containing several Hearts, went badly for us. None more so than for one of our bats severely damaging her knee. An ambulance was called ending the game. The second game, against Howick Pak., went much better but ended with us 40 runs short

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade Limited Overs Major Championship

14 Oct, Round 1 PARNELL vs. SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Riversdale Reserve SUBURBS NEW LYNN 192/9 (45) Karun Phorgat 2/25 (8), Joe Kinghorn-Gray 2/43 (8), Razin Bharde 2/35 (9), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 3/21 (6) PARNELL 162/10 (?) Tom Talbot 30 RESULT: SUBURBS NEW LYNN WON BY 30 RUNS

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: After a delayed start, due to a wet artificial wicket, the game was reduced to 45 overs for each team. Riversdale Reserve was a good venue and we enjoyed the outfield preparation, the ball ran well over the surface giving value for good shots.

We lost the toss and bowled first up - SNL totaled 192 for 9 off their 45 overs Our bowling: “Special” K Phogat had another good spell of bowling with figures of:8 overs 2 for 25 Joe Gray: 8 overs 2 for 43 Razin Bharde: completed his 9 overs with tidy figures of:9 overs 2 for 35 BUT!! Flynn McGregor-Sumpter chipped in with an outstanding spell of:3 wickets for 21 runs off 6 overs

Positives were: only 5 Wides conceded and no byes, says much for the discipline in the bowling and to Elliot Foster behind the stumps

After a shortened lunch break we took our turn at the crease. A promising opening partnership of 39 between Flynn M-S and Callum Douglas off the first 9 overs was broken when Flynn was bowled around his legs for 12 runs. Callum and Simon Wood moved the total forward 52 before both losing their wickets at this total and we were soon 69 for 4 in the 20th over. Skipper Tom Talbot and Giacomo Lamplough steadied the ship with 26 run partnership before Giacomo was out caught shortly after the drinks break. Tom was unfortunately run out (through a direct hit) with his score on 30. The “tail” played very well and put up a good fight to bring us within striking distance and a possible victory with 30 needed off 5 overs. We did not have the batting depth left to control the chase or the outcome. Thoughts: 1) Bat full number of overs, essential going forward 2) Not losing wickets in “clumps” goes without saying 3) Someone in the top 5 needs to stand up and put a substantial innings together 4) The best bowling change is the drinks break!! Again we need to manage this as batsmen in the middle. Both sides last a wicket after the drinks break.

But; I have to reiterate, the tail put up a good fight and that to me is very pleasing and a real positive going forward. Catching needs a bit of work on and here it is up to the individuals to put in the extra works. overall was good and the “buzz” on the field never slackened; another positive going forward.

In conclusion: The new lads to the team certainly added in positive ways and fitted in to the side well, something that Parnell Cricket is good at, welcoming the “new kids on the block”

A loss always hurts but, the overall attitude of this team will lead to; Better things to come

I certainly look forward to the season ahead.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This season will be tough for our Premier Reserves. Last season, our extremely strong team went through the season unbeaten and gained promotion from the Minor tier to the Major. They now compete in a REAL Reserve Grade – a REAL challenge. The Team has also lost Billy Sanger and Tom Urry who gave tremendous bite to our pace attack. However, we still have an excellent team but batsmen will have to stand up and perform and fielding has to be top notch to back the bowlers. This Grade is just one step from Prems and gives those with ambition the chance to put pressure on the Prem incumbents. This first game showed promise – now for wins!

PREMIER RESERVE DRAW FOR NEXT TWO SATURDAYS: 21 Oct. Parnell vs. Takapuna at Onewa Domain 2A 28 Oct. Parnell vs. Waitakere at Te Atatu Park 1.

Men’s Other Senior Grades

Parnell “Thirds”

Our “Thirds”, also unbeaten last season and now promoted, have Rudi Bisschoff as their new /coach. He relieves Club Captain Pete Hickman of just a little of his duties. Rudi brings a wealth of experience to the Team originally from South Africa, he played for several seasons in Dubai before coming to Auckland and Parnell. Here he gave great service to out Reserves with his fast medium bowling and then provided a steadying influence to our Thirds last season. Rudi has done a great deal of coaching and recently completed his Level 2. Very best wishes to our Thirds who start their season tomorrow against Grafton United at Victoria Park 4A.

Parnell “Fourths”

The Fourths start the season tomorrow vs Suburbs New Lynn at Madills Farm 2A. Very difficult to start the season on a long weekend with so many regulars away, on holiday or still at university and a number of others out with injury. Thaks to several from the Pressies putting their hands up and, at time of writing, 2 MORE PLAYERS ARE NEEDED – if you can play please contact Club Captain Pete Hickman asap – 022 1956812 or [email protected]

Doug Cowie on Umpiring & the Law Changes

Doug, one of NZ’s most experienced umpires having stood in 22 Tests and 71 ODIs, addressed a group of Junior Parent/Coaches last Wednesday to bring us up to date with recent Law changes of which there have been many. Very good to learn that much commonsense has been applied and the changes seem very much for the better.

Thank you Doug, your address was hugely interesting and informative and details of the Law changes follow below:

cricHQ in Receivership – Latest from NZ Cricket

From: David White Sent: Thursday, 19 October 2017 3:54 p.m. To: Major Associations CEO's ; District Associations CEO's Cc: NZC Senior Management Team ; Sarah Samuels ; Kent Stead ; Anjana Patel Subject: RE: CricHQ - Further Update

Good afternoon

Further to the email below, NZC have continued discussions with the receivers and will be meeting with them tomorrow.

The receivers have reiterated a priority of keeping the system operating. They stress that it is very early in the process and that, at this point, they're still working on understanding and assessing the situation.

We understand the uncertainty at this time is concerning but we encourage everyone to continue "business-as-usual" cricket operations until more information is at hand.

We will continue with regular updates and encourage you and the cricket family to contact either Sarah Samuels ([email protected]) or Club Support ([email protected]) if you have any issues.

Regards

David

The Forty Niners

The 1949 New Zealand cricket tour of England was one of this countries greatest sporting achievements. A couple of weeks ago, Sir launched his book “The Skipper’s Diary”. His Father, , captain of that great team, had meticulusly kept a diary of the tour – hugely insightful. The recent TV documentary of the Forty Niners was superb and particularly relevant to Parnell members as we provided four members of that team – , vice captain, and Johnny Hayes plus Warwick Watts, the scorer and baggage master. Immediately following the tour of many months, moved from and joined Parnell.

On tour there were many highlights and a good number by the Parnell players especially by • Merv Wallace who set the scene by scoring almost 1000 runs in May and, overall, 1722 on the tour • Bert Sutcliffe who’s 101 in the 3rd Test, 423 Test runs at 60.42 and 2627 at 59.70 overall Sadly, Johnny Hayes was injured early on but he took 26 wickets in the 9 games that he played. And Geoff Rabone scored 1021 runs and took 50 wickets. Over the next few years Merv, Bert and Geoff all went on to captain NZ in the few Tests that we played.

Congratulations to Sir Richard for making the Diary available to us all. It adds another perspective to the book, “Cricket Companions” written by Alan Mitchell back in 1950. And, more particularly reminds us of those feats of our very great cricketers of past times.

It couldn’t have worked out better!

New Zealand Cricket have just announced that the Second Cricket Test of a two Test Series against England will be at the beautiful Hagley Oval in between Friday 30th March and Tuesday 3rd April, 2018. Coinciding very well with the Golden Oldies World Cricket Festival between 1st April and 8th April.

The Golden Oldies Festival Hub is a major marquee and tent village immediately alongside the Oval where the Test Match is to be played. The Parade of Teams will conclude alongside the Oval and the Welcome Party will be in the marquee. The Cricket atmosphere and attention in Christchurch and particularly at Hagley Park will be unsurpassed with our first round of games taking place on various pitches in Hagley Park in the vicinity of the Oval.

It’s a great chance to come to Christchurch early, watch a couple of days on the iconic Hagley Oval and then enjoy the Festival Week where no doubt there will be plenty of friendly interaction with the followers of Test Cricket.

We are working with New Zealand Cricket to set up a Golden Oldies participant ticket option with selected seating in a Golden Oldies part of the ground and with Golden Oldies ticket holders having the benefit of access to our hospitality in the Golden Oldies Marquee.

Perfect opportunity to enjoy playing and watching cricket at all levels.

Why not enter the Festival now and arrive a couple of days early to watch some great Test Cricket before enjoying the Festival week.

Yours in Cricket, Peter McDermott [email protected]
