Columbus is rais- ing its wrecker fees. The city council voted unanimously last week to allow an increase in fees under the wrecker ordinance. The pro- posal, presented by Armstrong Chief Operations Of- ficer David Armstrong, came after meetings between city officials and wrecker companies. “We’ve had a lot of issues with wreckers charging way more than the ordinance allows for,” Arm- strong told The Dispatch. “We got every wrecker company in Colum- bus together and had a meeting.” A wrecker advisory committee, composed of Armstrong, Ward 1 Councilman Gene Taylor, Mayor Robert Smith and three wrecker representatives, recommended in- creasing wrecker fees from $125 to $195 for hook-ups. Storage fees will increase from $30 per day to $40 per day, and removal fees to $10 for drivable vehicles and $25 for non-drivable vehicles, and $30 for See WRECKER FEES, 3A

ADDICTION Opioid deaths: another drug-war failure A 2014 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that states allowing medical marijuana had 25 percent fewer deaths from prescription drug overdoses than states forbid- ding it. Illicit drug use is an old phenomenon, and Jeff Sessions has an old solution: take off the gloves. “We have too much of a tolerance for drug use,” the attorney general complained to Steve Chapman an audience of law enforcement officials recently, promising more aggressive policing. “Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs is bad,” he declared. “It will destroy your life.” That claim will fall on a lot of deaf ears among the 100 WASHINGTON million Americans who have used marijuana — most of whom found it did not destroy their lives and some of whom found it made their lives better. He is right, though, that tolerance is rampant.
