AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - JULY 1990 PAGE 15 MONARTC) CLAY TARGET CLUB INC. - ANNIVERSARY SHOOT APRIL 21-22, 1990

One always hopes for perfect weather for a twoday shoot but I guess sometimes "things" just don't go according to plan. With one third of Queensland under water. Nyngan residents iighting a losing battle trying to save their town and Eastern Victoria being ravaged by floods, why should we not suffer a little too! You guessed it - the wind blew in a gale from the south and at times shooters battled to hold their ouns steadv. some shooters shot lor the ilrst lime slnce last winter Tr. wet weaiher gear (though no rain fell) vthlle a codple oi Amazon women shooters got about In short sleeves - whar's that old saying 'No sense no fee!lng Even through all of this, our first day of our Anniversary Shoot was a howling success with eight possibles in the first event. We managed a total of 55 shooters from as far afield as Whyalla. Broken Hill and Millicent along with all of the regulars irom some neighbouring clubs. Six ladies, eight veterans and two juniors also contested the weekend's events and when those veterans like 70~ye3~0Iu Fred Atk~nson, rhe ' one armed shooter ' irom SAGC can shoot a 23/25 in the Slnale Barrel Chamo~onshinin near aale condlrions and "heart bypass" shooter ~1a;riecopping (~iliicent)comes in with a 75/75 in the Point Score Championship, winning the event outright, one can only hope that the longer we shoot the better we will become. You "older" guys certainly are an inspiration to us all. Saturday's event 1. Baker Boy 25 tgt Double Barrel Champion- ship saw eight possibles. Spectators watched in comfort through the clubhouse windows the shoot-off, which finally saw young Shane Craig (Lake Albert) going down to the more experienced John Johansen (Monarto) 71/71 to 70/71. Shane has recently made it into A grade and is proving to be a shooter with a lot of deter- mination. Event 2. Swanport Cellars (West End Brewery) 25 tgt Single Barrel Championship this year went to Phil O'Connell (Monarto). Considering the rough, windy conditions it was not surprising that a perfect score did not come in, but the three shooters who shot 24/25 were to be commended - many "hot shot" shooters cringed as they saw their scores being posted on the scoreboard. Phil O'Connell. Sandie Appelkamp (Lake Albert's lady) and Trevor Morris (Alexandra) attempted to do battle in the shoot-off. Sandie missed her first target, Trevor his second and that left Phil to take out the top award. Event 3, Monfries & Burchell 25 tgt Point Score Championship saw Ross Walsh (Broken Hill) take the honours after a shoot-off with

PAGE 22 AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - JULY 1990 Bev Penney, Secretary of the Wang- argta Clay Target Club in northern Victoria, has kindly sent me a photo of an old gun club with the title Wilby Gun Club in 1904. Note on the lower left hand corner reads, "Fund raising for any club can be a strain. but for the Wilbv Gun Club it was obviously a pleasure, on this occasion they bagged 524 hares in one day." Bev goes on to say - Wilby is a small settlement between Wangaratta and Yarrawonga in the north-east of Victoria. Wangarana club members were unaware that there was ever a gun club at Wilby. However, we think that by publishing this story and picture it may refresh a memory somewhere, even if it does go back to 1904! Both Bev and myself would appreciate any information should anyone hear of such a gun club being at Wilby in the early days.
