Today’s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow’s Leaders 2 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Postseason Awards Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year Pat Spencer, Loyola Maryland, Sr., A * Spencer finished the regular-season averaging 2.86 goals per game, 3.79 assists per game and 6.64 points per game. He is the only player to rank in the top-20 of the NCAA statistics in all three scoring categories while he is second in both assists and points per game. * With 219 career assists and 359 points, Spencer is third all-time in NCAA Division I in both categories. He is also the Patriot League’s career leader in both categories. He broke those records as a junior in 2018. * The three-time All-American is the first men’s lacrosse player to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors all four years, and he is one of four student-athletes in any Patriot League sport to earn the same annual awards four times.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year Johnny Surdick, Army West Point, Sr., D * Surdick wrapped up the regular-season picking up 53 groundballs and nabbing 31 caused turnovers in 14 starts. * He averaged 2.21 caused turnovers per game this season to rank sixth nationally, all while guarding the opponent’s top offensive threat each week. * The two-time defensive player of the week was voted a Semifinalist last week.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Faceoff Specialist of the Year Conor Gaffney, Lehigh, Jr., FO * In 15 games played, Gaffney averaged 8.33 groundballs (ranked 10th nationally) per game to go along with a 216-of-313 (.690) faceoff mark. His 69.0 percentage is currently fourth in the nation. * Gaffney set a school record with 24 faceoff wins versus Robert Morris on April 10th. * Gaffney owns the Lehigh record for groundballs in a game (16), season (currently 125) and career (currently 322). * The 125 groundballs this season and 322 in his career currently rank second and fourth in Patriot League history, respectively. * Gaffney has nabbed 216 faceoff wins this season to put himself at second in Patriot League history.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Year Jacob Stover, Loyola Maryland, Sr., GK * Stover finished his fourth regular-season as a Greyhound with 200 saves, and he is third in the NCAA this season with a .592 save percentage. * The four-year starter, who also was the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the year in 2018, posted his 15th-straight game with 10 or more saves when he made 12 in the 15-4 win over Lafayette last weekend. The streak encompassed all regular-season games this year and last year’s NCAA Quarterfi- nal game. * During his four years at Loyola, Stover has recorded an 8.59 goals against average and a .561 saves percentage.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year Chase Scanlan, Loyola Maryland, Fr., M * Scanlan ended his first collegiate regular season with 38 goals and 13 assists for 51 points in 14 games. * Scanlan leads all NCAA freshmen in goals and goals per game (2.71). * His 38 goals also lead all NCAA Division I midfielders this season, regardless of academic year.

The William Lawson Coach of the Year Charley Toomey, Loyola Maryland * Toomey led the Greyhounds to their fourth Patriot League regular-season title in six years this past weekend with a 15-4 win over Lafayette. * Toomey guided the team to a 11-3 overall record, including a 7-1 record in League play. * Under his direction, Loyola Maryland was ranked No. 1 in the country for two weeks earlier this season.
