Sweet 16 is published biannually by Lufthansa Technik Dear readers, Philippines for its customers and friends. It has been 16 years since our hangar doors first opened, in the midst of a fast-growing Pacific region. We started with one hangar, eventually growing to three. Keeping pace with this dynamic region and industry, our facility also continues to grow. Breaking ground on new capabilities – this was EDITOR an idea we talked about in the previous issue. Today, it rises some 30 meters ANGEL DELA CRUZ in height (page 4), a reality that enables us to complete heavy maintenance checks on two A380s simultaneously (page 3). ART DIRECTOR CHA ZULUETA

Meanwhile, our commitment to nurture our partners continues, with the ADVISER signing of the 5-year agreement for line maintenance with Philippine RAINER JANKE (page 9), and modification of ’s In-Flight Entertainment and cabin seats (page 10). We also make sure we are equipped with the latest know-how (page 6 & page 8), and help our customers look good (page 7 & 9).

Registered D-AIMA and D-AIMB, Lufthansa German Airlines’ “Frankfurt am Main” and “München” were at LTP for their Intermediate Layover (IL) checks. It was a special event too for Lufthansa – being the first major overhauls in their A380 fleet.

The cabins were stripped completely. Seats, galleys, lavatories, partitions, floor and wall panels were brought to the specialized workshops to undergo inspections, testing, refurbishment, and if necessary, repair. During recent Door modification base and heavy maintenance events, the MRO performed retrofits on the Upper Deck and Main Deck Doors, Wing Inboard Outer Fixed Leading Edge (IOFLE), and Flap track #6.

The modifications are the latest in service bulletins released by Airbus, where following tests or actual in-service flights, several areas in the A380 were found to be vulnerable to cracks or structural damage. To complete the modifications, it was important to be closely aligned with the OEM to ensure the smooth execution of critical tasks. Airbus experts were onsite prior to and during the initial modification, as they helped set up dedicated equipment, the right environment, and served as on-hand consultants.
