Butcher wanted to believe that the third friend could pull through, but after what he had seen that night, hope was hard to muster. “His chances,” Butcher says, “were slim to none.” Dr. Nitin Bhatia, the 36-year-old director of the Spine Center at UCI, had delivered the grisly diagnosis: internal decapitation. “I read the CT scan, and it was depressing,” Bhatia says. “Ninety-five percent of people with internal decapitation die immediately or within a day or two. Of the other five percent, most are either quadriplegic or on a ventilator the rest of their lives.” By the afternoon of April 9 the baseball world had learned of the death of Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart and his friends Courtney Stewart and BOUnd BY TRAGEdy Weaver (left) pays tribute Henry Pearson in a car crash, and information started to emerge to Adenhart before every about that other passenger, a 24-year-old youth baseball coach start and had a hug for named Jon Wilhite, who had been a catcher at Cal State–Fullerton.

  • A's Daily News Clips; April 10-12, 2010
A’s Daily News Clips; April 10-12, 2010 A's energetic backup infielder Adam Rosales has four RBIs in win over Angels By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune 04/12/2010 ANAHEIM — Sunday was a day of rest for some A's regulars, and that made it a day of opportunity for Adam Rosales. Getting the start at second base, and drawing his first at-bats of the season, Rosales drove in four runs to key the A's 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels before a crowd of 40,601 at Angel Stadium. Much was written about Rosales' high-energy style of play before Oakland obtained him from Cincinnati in February. Now the A's are experiencing it for themselves. In his first at-bat, Rosales lined a 1-0 pitch from Joe Saunders for a solo homer in the second inning. Sprinting immediately after contact, Rosales seemed to reach first base before the ball cleared the left-field wall. "He's someone who probably needs to take a nap," A's starting pitcher Dallas Braden said amusedly. "He plays like he hasn't slept in four days. I relish players like that. He doesn't know any other speed. You get somebody to play with that kind of energy, it gets you going." It's early, but the A's are a confident bunch after opening the season 5-2 against division foes Seattle and Los Angeles. Today marks their fifth consecutive day atop the American League West. The last time they occupied first place was May 12, 2008.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 31, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2003-Cincinnati hosts the opening of Great American Ball Park. The Reds lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1, before a sellout crowd of 42,343 MLB.COM Get the season started with 30 cool Statcast stats for 30 teams MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello looks back at the some of the best Statcast findings in the inaugural year of the new analysis tool By Mike Petriello / MLB.com | @mike_petriello | March 30th, 2016 + 0 COMMENTS This marks the second season of Statcast™, and that means we have an entire season of data about exit velocity, spin rate, extension, arm strength, lead distance, launch angle and just about anything else you can think of, for every team. Let's get the season started in style by running down an interesting Statcast™ stat for each team -- in many cases, something that never could have been measured prior to 2015. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Blue Jays: 1.07 seconds: Ryan Goins' baseball-leading exchange time, which is a way to measure the time that elapses between a fielder receiving the ball and releasing the throw. What that means is that no infielder in the game managed to get rid of the ball as quickly as Goins did, which makes sense given his stellar defensive reputation. Orioles: 82.2 mph: Darren O'Day's average exit velocity against on four-seam fastballs, the second lowest among 407 pitchers who threw at least 100 of them. Despite averaging just 88 mph on his otherwise unimposing fastball, O'Day's swing-and-miss rate of 36.8 percent was better than every pitcher other than Aroldis Chapman, and the hitters that did make contact against O'Day's funky sidearm delivery failed to make good contact, leading to a .097 average against it.

  • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it?
