This marks the completion of Christ’s glorification and lordship over all creation. At the Incarnation, Christ brought His divine nature to human nature. In the mystery of the Ascension, Christ brings human nature to the divine Kingdom. He reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit in His glorified body, revealing His glorified human nature- indeed, human flesh-to be worshipped by the whole angelic realm. In some of the icons of the Ascension, Christ’s white robes are tinted red to indicate the shedding of His blood for the redemption of the world and the ascent of that life-giving blood into heaven. Christ’s Ascension is His enthronement in the fullness of divine authority and glory. Icons of the Ascension represent Christ in such a way that one cannot tell whether He is going to heaven or coming His return. This captures the profound truth that we are living under His reign while awaiting His return. Thus, the icon shows Christ being taken up (Acts 1:11), coming again in like manner (Acts 1:11), and yet continually present (Mt. 28:20). Believers are not to stand idly gazing up into heaven, but rather are called to virtuous faith and action in this world until Christ’s return 5 WEBSITE :www.ststephens.in MOBILE NO. 8750001733 .

  • The Church and the Catholicate
The Church and the Catholicate Among the ancient Churches in Christendom, the Church of the East (Persian Church), the Armenian Church and the Georgian Church used the title Catholicos to designate the Supreme Heads of their Churches. The title indicates that the holder is the Head and Common Father of that particular Church. He is the Father of the Fathers. It was used by the Supreme Heads of the above mentioned three Churches, situated outside the boundary of the ancient Roman Empire. Thus the title became part of the common heritage of the Church of Christ. In the Roman Empire, in its place, the Chief Bishop was called Patriarch. Thus the bishops of Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were known as Patriarchs. The Bishops of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul in Turkey) and Jerusalem were raised to the status of Patriarch by the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople in 381 and Chalcedon in 451 respectively. Regarding the juridical and canonical powers, both Catholicos and Patriarch have the same rights and duties. Both are Father and Head of a sui juris Church (particular Church). Eventually the above mentioned three Catholicoi added the title Patriarch to their names. In Kerala/India it was in 1912 that the title Catholicos was introduced in the Syrian Jacobite (Orthodox) Church. Until that time the head of the Jacobite Church in India was known as the Malankara Metropolitan. The title Catholicos was established in India through the efforts of Fr. P. T. Geevarghese, a Jacobite priest (Archbishop Mar Ivanios in the Catholic Church since 1930), by the Senior Patriarch of Antioch, Mar Abd-al-Msiha, residing at that time in Tur-Abdin/Turkey.

1 A Syriac Poetic Eulogy for St. Gregorios of Parumala Dr. Meledath Kurian Thomas [email protected] Photograph of St. Gregorios of Parumala Funeral of St. Gregorios of Parumala - 1902 Taken for the Travancore Government - 1901 Dr. J.J. van Ginkel, affiliated fellow, faculty of humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies, the Netherlands, presented an interesting paper in the Eight World Syriac Conference held at Kottayam, India from 8 th to 16 th September 2014. The paper was titled as “A poetic Eulogy from Kharpat for Geevarghese Mar Gregorios (‘Parumala Thirumani’); reflections on the relations with and knowledge of Indian Syriac Church in the Middle East around 1900.” As the title indicates, it was about Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Gregorios of Niranam, Kollam & Thumpamon dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church; popularly known as ‘Parumala Thirumani’ , the first Indian canonized Saint. The theme of his paper was about a eulogy written by Mar Dionysius ‘Abd an-Nur Aslan, West Syriac metropolitan of Harput, Homs and Diyarbekir for Parumala Thirumani around the time of the latter’s demise. Before entering into the topic under discussion, here is the brief life sketch of St. Gregorios of Parumala. St. Gregorios of Parumala was born on 15 June 1848 AD at Mulamthuruthy, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. He received his minor order of deacon ( Korooyo ) on 26 September 1858 AD from Palakkunnath Mar Mathews Athanasios, Malankara Metropolitan and becomes a full deacon in 1864 AD by West Syrian bishop Yooyakkim Mar Coorilos. In the same year he was ordained as a priest by Palakkunnath Mar Mathews Athanasios followed by the elevation as Cor-Episcopus by Yooyakkim Mar Coorilos.

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA CIVIL APPELLATE JURISDICTION CIVIL APPEAL NO(S). 7115-7116 OF 2019 (ARISING FROM SLP(C) Nos.20661-20662 OF 2019) FR. ISSAC MATTAMMEL COR-EPISCOPA ..APPELLANT(S) VERSUS ST. MARY’S ORTHODOX SYRIAN CHURCH & ORS. ..RESPONDENT(S) O R D E R 1. Leave granted. 2. It passes comprehension that how the judge has passed the impugned interim order which runs expressly contrary to the decision of this Court in K.S. Verghese v. St. Peters & St. Pauls Syrian Orthodox Church & Ors., (2017) 15 SCC 333. This Court has passed several judgments and orders to the effect that no such interference can be made by any court after the decision has been rendered by this Court in a representative suit which is binding on all concerned and it is the constitutional duty of all concerned to obey the judgment and order of this Court. As per Article 141 of the Constitution of India, the law declared by this Court is binding on all courts and under Article 144, civil and judicial authorities within the territory of India shall act in aid of Supreme Court. Kerala being Indian Territory all concerned are bound to act accordingly. We have intended peace to come in Church but due to such orders passed in contravention of law laid down by this Court law can never be obeyed. This amount to a violation of judgment and order. The High Court has passed an interim order in violation of the judgments and orders passed by this Court. We 1 are not able to understand what kind of judicial discipline is reflected while passing the impugned order, which should not have been passed at all.

  • Consecration of Holy Myron
Consecration of Holy Myron: Frequently Asked Questions 1.) How many times has Holy Myron been consecrated in Malankara? The most recent (3 April, 2009, at Devalokam Aramana Chapel) consecration was the ninth instance. Syriac Patriarchs consecrated Holy Myron in 1876 and 1911, respectively by Patriarch Ignatius Peter IV (27 August, 1876) and Patriarch Ignatius Abdullah II Satuff (19 August, 1911). Mulanthuruthy Marthoman Church was the venue on both occasions. After the Catholicate was relocated in 1912, Catholicos Baselius Geevarghese II consecrated Holy Myron twice at the Old Seminary Chapel (22 April, 1932, and 20 April, 1951). Catholicos Baselius Augen I consecrated the Holy Myron once on 21 December, 1967, again at the Old Seminary Chapel. Catholicos Baselius Marthoma Mathews I consecrated the Holy Myron twice (1 April, 1977, and 25 March, 1988), the first instance at the Old Seminary Chapel and on the second occasion at the Devalokam Aramana Chapel. Catholicos Baselius Marthoma Mathews II consecrated the Holy Myron once on 26 March, 1999, at the Devalokam Aramana Chapel. 2.) Are there any other instances of Holy Myron consecration in Malankara? Yes. Patriarch Zakka I Iwas of the Syriac Church has consecrated the Holy Myron for the breakaway Jacobite faction twice at Manarcaud St Mary’s Church (27 February, 1982) and Marthomen Cheriyapalli, Kothamangalam (25 September, 2004). 3.) Who can consecrate the Holy Myron? The convention of consecration of Holy Myron has evolved over the centuries. In most churches, the right is reserved for the Head of the Church. Thumpamon Diocesian Church A Historical Look Thumpamon Martha Mariam Dicesam Church , Historical Out Look D 717 to Ad 1932 Thumpamon Church is one of the ancient churches in the state. It was after the establishment of the 7½ Churches by St.Thomas, that the Martha Mariam Church was built in Thumpamon. Most of the historical documents were some how lost but the forefathers had spoken about the history of the church. Same in the case with many other churches, but the words are counted as proof of the history St Thomas had built the Nilackal Churches in AD 52. It became difficult for people to stay there by AD 325. So from there people started moving on to places like Thumpamon, Chenganoor, Kadampanad, Kanjirappally and Kayamkulam. This is being mentioned in the Ranny Taluk Diary 1 Thumpamon is just forty miles away from Nilackal, and it is on the banks of the river Achenkovil. There was no difficulty in reaching this place through waterways and so the history of people settling in this tertile area is considered as something believable. This place was good far cultivation and there were no dangers from wild animals and no threats from robbers in this place. The people who came to settle here realised that they could have a peaceful atmosphere here. The people who came here liked the place and in the places they built huts and started staying here. Those ancient Christians were very much hardworking and at the same time they were prayerful and loving human beings. Even from very ancient days, Quilon was a place where agricultural products were brought and sold, ginger, pepper and such agricultural items were sent from here to China and other persian countries.
