    INTERVIEW WITH KEN DEEDEY, MAY 18, 2018 Conducted by Ted Mascott Max DelSignore: The St. Lawrence River community and the North Country lost a passionate environmental advocate with the passing of Ken Deedy in the summer of 2018. A long-time Grindstone Island resident, Ken had an unwavering affinity for River area organizations, and was a principal founder of the Thousand Islands Land Trust, based in Clayton, New York. He served as president of the land trust for 16 years, and a board member for 33 years. Ken also maintained a charitable fund at the Northern New York Community Foundation that benefitted River area programs for many years. Ken was a great storyteller. A few weeks before his death, in August of 2018, he reflected on his fondest memories with his good friend, Ted Mascott. The following is a series of stories that capture the personalities and spirit of the many North Country people that, taken together, weave a fabric of caring, giving, and preserving. We hope you enjoy listening to this conversation with Ken Deedy. SEGMENT A: When and how Ken first came to the 1000 Islands and later purchased the cottage site on Grindstone Island. Ted: I thought we might start by your telling us how you first came to the river, you and your family. Ken: Well, I was a teenager I think, probably- Ted: And what year would that have been? Ken: Either '50, or '51. I never did look it up. My brother was in the army at the time, serving in Germany during the Korean war, and my parents, who both worked, would get annual vacations.

    New York State Conservation Partnership Program 2003 Grant Awards The New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP), funded through the Environmental Protection Fund and jointly administered by the Land Trust Alliance and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, advances the goals of New York's Open Space Plan by making grants to New York land trusts. The program awards grants for three purposes: • Transaction grants assist with the costs of acquiring conservation easements and fee lands, and providing public access to these properties; • Staffing grants help all-volunteer and small land trusts add professional staff to increase the pace, quality and sustainability of their conservation efforts; • Organizational development grants help land trusts expand their conservation programs so they can protect more acres, enhance their land and easement stewardship, raise more private funding, and plan for the future of their organizations. The process of applying for the staffing grants involves a rigorous assessment of a land trust's strengths and weaknesses and its ability to meet national standards for best practices in land conservation. All grants require a match of at least 1:1 non-state funds.     Spring 2018 Forty Years As The Voice for “The River” This year Save The River celebrates our 40th anniversary. The Upper St. Lawrence River is a unique waterway; a River shared between two nations, First Nations, and tribes, connecting the world’s largest surface freshwater system to the ocean, and bearing the burden of legacy pollution, invasive species, construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, commercial shipping, microbeads, fish advisories, combined sewer outfall discharges, and habitat damage from a decades-old water management plan that did not account for the environment - to name some of the issues facing it. As we look back on four decades since our founding in 1978, it seems appropriate to look at some of the milestones and issues we have tackled together with our members. •1958 - construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway leads to the inundation of nine Canadian villages and portions of Morrisburg and Iroquois, forcing the relocation of 6,500 people •1959 - the Seaway opens the River and Great Lakes to international shipping •1976 - the tug barge NEPCO 140 spills 300,000 gallons of oil into the St. Lawrence River, awakening the River valley to the dangers of commercial shipping •1978 - in August 500+ people, led by Barry Freed (later revealed to be Abbie Hoffman) and Johanna Lawrenson, attend a public meeting held by the Army Corps of Engineers to protest the idea of extending the commercial shipping season into the winter; Save The River is born out of this meeting, incorporating as a membership-based, not-for-profit corporation
