CHARLOTTESVILLE — Back in 1992, Tony Bennett thought he saw his future. Bennett was going to be picked in the fi rst round of the NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. He was going to play for a Hall of Fame coach, Jerry Sloan, and be the understudy to a Hall of Fame point guard, John Stockton. Bennett believed all this be- cause in the days leading to the draft Sloan had called his father and told him that if he was still on the board when it was the Jazz’ turn to pick, they were Harris taking him. Then came draft night. Just a few min- utes in, former NBA commis- sioner David Stern stepped to the Mitchell podium and said, “We have a trade.” The Jazz elected to ship their pick to the , who used it to take former Arkan- sas star Lee Mayberry. Bennett fell to the second round, where he was selected by the Charlotte Hornets.
