ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform Oslo 2014 2 Project report

Introduction ICE HOT Nordic Dance provides a context for performance and presentation of Nordic dance to the global market through the biannual ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platforms. ICE HOT is the largest existing platform for Nordic Dance and a unique arena to meet for international presenters and dance professionals’. In short time it has established itself as an important meeting forum and has gained great international attention/interest.

The aim of the dance platforms is to present and promote Nordic dance performances to an international audience of artistic directors and programmers with the goal to enhance the artists’ network possibilities, and expand their international working and touring opportunities. To extend the impact of the platforms the programmes are also open to dance practitioners and to the general public.

ICE HOT is aiming at developing artistic quality through increased mobility and networks for Nordic companies and artists by expanding their working possibilities beyond the borders of the Nordic countries. Through ICE HOT new ways of collaboration is developed through common promotion and shared financing.

ICE HOT presents Nordic in a joint way that would be difficult to achieve for each individual country. As such, ICE HOT is a brilliant example of Nordic cooperation in practice. The five Nordic partners of ICE HOT are Dance Info Finland (FI), Dansens Hus Stockholm (SE), Dansehallerne Copenhagen (DK), Performing Arts Iceland (IS) and Dansens Hus Oslo (NO).

The first ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform was performed in Stockholm in 2010 as a pilot project. In 2012 ICE HOT happened in Helsinki with approximately 300 participants consistent of programmers and “buyers” from 41 countries and all continents. Evaluations from these two platforms show that there is a huge interest for Nordic contemporary dance from the international community, presenters, artistic directors and companies.

Through branding the Nordic region and Nordic Dance ICE HOT has gained great international attention. The collaboration concept is unique in a global context and several countries are currently studying the opportunities for similar cooperation across national borders. Additionally ICE HOT generates high activity in the interim years 2013 and 2015, like continuous development of networks, collaborations and artistic exchanges between the countries, North America, Asia, amongst others.

ICE HOT – OSLO 2014.

The dance biennial ICE HOT kicked off for the third time, this time in Oslo. Almost 300 dance enthusiasts from 38 different countries and all continents gathered to see, meet and evaluate performances and dance artists from all five Nordic countries.

Dansens Hus Oslo hosted the platform, which took place 9 – 14 December 2014. In 2014 ICE HOT Oslo was inspired by the Norwegian Constitution anniversary 2014. ICE HOT emphasizes openness, democracy and equality as fundamental Nordic values and conveys these in a local and global context. The new challenges for democracy through increased global mobility and related intercultural challenges and opportunities were the main theme of the platforms´ seminars Dance art is intercultural and global originating in all cultures and an extensive international activity in its own right. The art expression is widely spread through its “non- verbal” dialogue.

ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform Oslo 2014 3 Project report

Democratic processes inspired the organization of ICE HOT in 2014 by allowing for different forms of participation in selection processes for the program. It was of vital importance to invite and include Oslo´s main venues in a collaboration to the present the huge amount of full scale performances. Dansens Hus agreed with The Norwegian Opera & , Riksscenen, Black Box Teater, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Riksteatret and Bærum Kulturhus.

“I thought the organizations was wonderful, everyone had a smile and was extremely positive. I was honoured and happy to be a part of ICE HOT.” Said by one of the presented artists

The jury An international jury selected a rich and varied program, which aimed to show the best of Nordic dance. The members of the international jury were Belgian Samme Raeymaekers, whose background includes the position of artistic director for Concertgebouw Brügge and December Dance Festival. German Bettina Masuch is artistic director at Tanzhaus Düsseldorf, and has previously directed a number of festivals, including the Springdance Festival in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Canadian Cathy Levy is director and executive producer at Canada’s National Arts Centre. She has formerly worked with music, theatre and dance and been responsible for dissemination and programming, both nationally and internationally. The selection criteria focused on high artistic calibre in the dance, and the jury were also advised to use a country quota. Only professional choreographers and companies were considered. The productions should be of varying formats and the choreographers chosen should be of both genders. None of the works selected should be older than from 2012.

The same criteria were used in putting together the program for ICE HOT KIDS, which is the year’s new event. The jury evaluated productions from the entire Nordic region and composed a program that showed some of the most interesting productions created for children during the past two years. The criteria differed from ICE HOT main program and there was no country quota on ICE HOT KIDS. The jury members were choreographer and professor at Oslo University College and professor of theatre studies Leif Hernes, Karin Helander, Director of the Centre for the Study of Children’s Culture at Stockholm University represented Sweden, and Norwegian dance artist Thomas Lereid Gundersen, who has been one of the members of performing arts facilitator Scenekunstbruket’s committee of art experts for The Cultural Rucksack scheme.

ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform Oslo 2014 4 Project report Artistic program In Oslo the festival opened with a Norwegian world premiere at Dansens Hus. An “open call” invited Norwegian choreographers to apply with a new production for the Opening night. There were 9 applications and ICE HOT partners made the final selection. Heine Avdal & Yukiko Shinozaki was chosen to open ICE HOT with the performance ”as if nothing has been spinning around for something to remember”.

The additional program presented 26 full-scale productions, 5 of them were KIDS productions targeting the age of 4 – 10 years. 13 choreographers were presented under MORE MORE MORE giving the choreographer 15 minutes to present her/his work through a visual presentation combined with film.

Great art for small people Theatre and dance for babies are becoming more and more popular. The demand for good performances is increasing. What characterizes good art for the youngest audience? How do we cater for babies’ ways of experience and expression? What trends and methods are currently predominant in theatre and dance for babies? Artists and scholars were invited to share their experience and findings in a seminar on the very youngest audience. An inspirational introduction will be followed by an informal panel discussion, where seminar participants are invited to take part. The seminar takes place during ICE HOT– Nordic Dance Platform. The first two days are designated productions for KIDS – which provides a perfect setting for encounters and interchange between the platform delegates and Norwegian companies dedicated to a young audience. The seminar was co-produced by Bærum Cultural Centre, regional centre of excellence for dance, Dansens Hus/ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform and ASSITEJ Norway.

Thursday 11 December Dansens Hus Debate: Dancing democracy 1 Moderator: Virve Sutinen Panel day 1: Hooman Sharifi, Ingri Fiksdal, Maija Hirvanen, Kee Hong Low In 1814, the modern Norwegian democracy was born in the middle of huge national and political changes. The two-day discussion draw light to the Nordic democracy, and the way artists today deal with issues of civic responsibility and powers in Nordic countries and elsewhere. We have invited artists, curators, and cultural workers to respond to some questions about the present state of democracy, and how they practice is informed by politics of today.

Friday 12 December Dansens Hus Debate: Dancing democracy 1 Moderator: Virve Sutinen Panel day 2: Mia Habib, Sanna Kekälainen, Jeff Khan, Sidsel Pape The constitution of 1814 is now the oldest constitution in still in force. The ideals of democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression, justice and peace, became important values of Norwegian society. Still, it took another hundred years to include women as people with the ultimate power to vote. In 1913, women got the universal right to vote in Norway. There is a saying that women danced themselves free during those years a hundred years ago. Despite a global reputation of gender equality in Nordic countries, the questions of sex and gender are still part of the cultural struggle. How is this struggle part of the contemporary
