The 2012-13 Elmira College Women‘s Hockey team enters this sea- son looking to rebuild and get back to the NCAA Division III Wom- en‘s Ice Hockey Tournament. EC failed to make the tournament last year, but still finished with a superb overall record of 20-5-1 and 15-3 -0 conference record. The team earned the number three seed in the ECAC Women‘s West playoffs before falling in the first round to SUNY Potsdam, 2-1.

Under new Head Coach Dean Jackson ‟03 the Soaring Eagles are looking to keep its winning ways in the highly competitive ECAC West. A season ago EC finished fourth in the nation in both scoring offense and scoring defense as it tallied 4.42 goals per game and gave up just 1.46 goals per contest. The Soaring Eagles carried the fourth best scoring margin, outscoring its op- ponents by nearly three goals per game. EC was effective at staying out of the penalty box as they spent an ECAC West-best 8.4 minutes per game in the tin bin.

The Soaring Eagles return two sophomores, Ashley Ryan ‟15 and Brooke Wilgosh ‟15, who earned a spot on the All-Rookie ECAC Team last season. Ryan was the third-leading scorer on the team last year contributing 10 goals and 13 assists. The rookie forward registered two scores on the power play and three game-winning goals. Ryan converted seven of her goals and 15 of her points during ECAC West play. She ranked first in the conference and 12th in the country in points per game among rookies as she netted 0.92 points per contest. Wilgosh proved to be a constant shut down player as she led an Elmira defensive unit that was one of the best in the nation.

EC boasted one of the nation‘s top defensive units last season finishing seventh in the nation in total scoring defense allowing 42 goals. Returning members of this defensive squad are Madison Johnston ‟13, Mary-Kate Gellerman ‟13 and Ella Stewart ‟14. Returning goaltenders for EC are Lauren Sullivan ‟13 and Samantha Maguire ‟13. Sullivan started in 19 games for the Soaring Eagles producing a 10-7-2 rec- ord and making 448 saves. Maguire appeared in four contests, making 91 stops, and allowed only eight goals.

Elmira returns the leadership of senior captain Caitlin Metcalf ‟13, junior captain Tanis Lamoureux ‟14 and junior assistant captain Katie Gaskin ‟14, all of whom made tremendous contributions last season.

The Soaring Eagles welcome six newcomers to the ice this season that look to make an impact. Four of the six players are freshman, while one is a senior and the other is a sophomore transfer from Plattsburgh State. Olivia Nystrom ‟16, Audrey Juneau ‟16, Phoe- be Piku ‟16, Taylor Steadman ‟16, Samantha Curk ‟13 and Ashton Hogan ‟15 will all look to make con- tributions to the team in their first season in the Pur- ple and Gold.

16 2012-13 Elmira College Women‟s Ice Hockey 2011-12 Season in Review

The Elmira College Women‘s Ice Hockey team completed another successful season under the guidance of fourth year Head Coach Greg Fargo ‘06. Fargo led the Purple and Gold to an overall record of 20-5-1 and a record of 15-3-0 in conference play, earning EC the number three seed in the ECAC Women‘s West playoffs.

EC finished fourth in the nation in both scoring offense and scoring defense as it tallied 4.42 goals per game and gave up just 1.46 goals per contest. The Soaring Eagles carried the fourth best scoring margin, outscoring its opponents by nearly three goals per game. The Soaring Eagles were effective at staying out of the penalty box as they spent an ECAC West-best 8.4 minutes per game in the tin bin.

The Elmira College Women‘s Ice Hockey team placed six members on the ECAC West All- Conference teams, including three members on the Second Team. Lindsay Mitchell ‘12 (Arnold, MD -- North American Hockey Academy), Tori Charron ‘14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Pan- thers) and Kathryn Walker ‘12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select) all earned Second Team All- Madison Johnston ‟13 ECAC West accolades. Mitchell led the Soaring Eagles in points during the season, finishing with 32 points on 11 goals and 21 assists. She proved to be an offensive catalyst, tallying 26 of her 32 points in conference competition. Mitchell was 11th in the country, tallying 0.81 assists per game and 16th in points at 1.23 per contest. Charron led EC in goals with 18, also adding 12 assists for a total of 30 points, good for second on the team. The second year forward tal- lied four game-winning goals and four power-play markers apiece during the regular season. Three of the game-winners and three extra- attacker scores came during ECAC West play. She finished the season ranked 10th in the nation in goals per game at 0.72 and tied for 15th in game-winning scores with four. Walker proved to be a defensive force for Elmira, as she led a defense that outscored its opponents 88-27 in conference play. The fourth year defender proved to be a great two-way player as she netted five goals and dished out 11 assists for 16 points. Walker finished the regular season with two game-winning goals, one of which came in conference.

The Soaring Eagles saw two first year players awarded a place on the All-Rookie ECAC West Team. Ashley Ryan ‟15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) and Brooke Wilgosh ‟15 (Regina, SK -- Notre Dame Hounds) both received the distinction. Ryan proved to be a critical component to the Soaring Eagle offense in her first season as she recorded 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. The rookie forward regis- tered two scores on the power play and three game-winning goals. Ryan converted seven of her goals and 15 of her points during ECAC West play. She ranked first in the ECAC West and 12th in the country in points per game among rookies as she netted 0.92 points per con- test. Wilgosh emerged as an important defensive piece to the team during her rookie campaign. She recorded 13 points, on three goals and 10 assists. Nine of Wilgosh‟s points came in conference competition, while holding opponents to just 1.5 goals per contest in ECAC West play.

The final member of the Elmira College Women‘s Ice Hockey team to earn a spot on an All-Conference team was Lisa Marshall ‟14 (Powhatan, VA -- Wayne State University) who received Honorable Mention All-ECAC West accolades. Marshall appeared in 11 contests for Elmira logging over 600 minutes while making 223 saves and recording a .937 save percentage and 1.44 goals against average. Marshall finishes the season ranked 8th in the country in goals against average (1.44) and save percentage (.937), while ranking sixth in win percent- age, prevailing in 80 percent of the games she appeared in going 8-2-0. Lauren Sullivan ‟13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville) played over 600 minutes between the pipes for Elmira, making 260 saves, while compiling a .925 save percentage and the 12th best goals against average mark (1.67) in the nation en route to an 9-3-1 record. That mark propelled her to the 11th best win percentage (73 percent), while she also ranked 11th in shutouts with three. Third year netminder Samantha Maguire ‟13 (Findlay, OH -- Ohio Flames) won all three contests she appeared in making 67 saves, including an impressive .985 save percentage and 0.33 goals against average.

Many other Soaring Eagles gained valuable experience throughout the 2011-12 cam- paign and EC will return an experienced unit to the ice next season as they look to compete for an ECAC West Championship.

Elmira loses Mitchell, Walker, Captains Alex Bresler ‘12 (Golden, CO -- Golden), Alex McPhail ‘12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros) and Lauren Campbell ‘12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University) to graduation.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ELMIRA COLLEGE SOARING EAGLE

“If you’re one of the privileged few to attend this College be ready to follow your dream; a college education while doing what you desire, play- ing hockey for an elite team. Isn’t that what you dreamed of accomplishing? I know I did. What stands out in my mind most of all is the chemistry we had and how we always played for each other. Everyone has always been dedicat- ed to make both themselves a better player as well as their teammates. That is what wins championships. The best feeling in the world is competing for the NCAA championship. The excitement, the media and publicity, the pressure, the huge crowds and the overall feeling of being on the ice in that moment is indescribable. It is something you have to experience to fully understand. That should be your goal… If you’re dedicated, hard working and ready to grow into the best person and athlete that you can be, then you will excel on this team and at this college.”

To enter our team is to enter a bond that will never be forgotten. From the ups of the season to the lows we will always be there for one another and I know that is something I will take with me forever. Anything, anytime, anywhere…we will be there.”

24 2012-13 Elmira College Women‟s Ice Hockey Soaring Eagles in the Classroom

At Elmira College academics are a priority and we believe in the DIII philosophy which offers Student-Athletes the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athlet- ics and academics. EC Student-Athletes score big on the ice and in the classroom, as 61% have a GPA of 3.0 or better. The Women‘s Hockey program stress academics even more so. Each member of the team is required to attend team study hall hours during each term in order to reach their personal academic goals. Academically the College provides the resources for all students to succeed. Academic tutoring and support is free to all full-time stu- dents. In addition, tutors in math and writing are available in freshman dormitory lounges many evenings during Term I and Term II. Each week, all freshman in our nationally recognized Writing Program must attend three class meetings and a one half- hour individual tutorial session with their instructor to review and improve their writing skills. EC continues to be on the forefront of developing exciting and unique academic experiences throughout the year. In the spring term students are encouraged to study abroad and to take classes of higher interest. Students have studied in countries such as San Salvador, , Spain, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, Ec-

25 2012-13 Elmira College Women‟s Ice Hockey Soaring Eagles in the Community Community Service

Elmira College is where common good is a required course. We expect Elmira College graduates to be thrust into leader- ship roles in their future communities. Community service is an important part of fulfilling that role. Elmira College is the only College in the nation to require and give credit for both and internship and community service. With that, EC is committed to fostering an environment where students look to help the greater good.

The Women‘s Hockey program is a shining of example of the importance and impact that community service can have. All members of the Varsity Women‘s Ice Hockey program exceed expectations by volunteering in the Elmira, Corning and other local communities at least twice a month.

Our Women‘s Ice Hockey athletes volunteer with various groups and organizations such as:

 Breast Cancer Awareness  CHAMPS Life Skills  Elmira Animal Shelter  Elmira City School District  Elmira Food Bank  Head Start  Second Chance Ranch  SOAR (reading program)  Pediatrics  St. John Church  YMCA Camp Cory

26 2012-13 Elmira College Women‟s Ice Hockey Soaring Eagles in the Weight Room Strength and Conditioning

Each year the goal of the EC Women‘s Hockey pro- gram is to compete to win another National Champi- onship. It is the combination of cardiovascular condi- tioning, weight training and on-ice development that will allow the program to reach that goal.

The primary objective of the Elmira College Women‘s Hockey Strength and Conditioning program is to pro- vide sport specific training which will help each athlete reach their maximum on-ice potential.

The program is year round and is broken into four crucial and integrated segments: Off-season, Pre- season, In-season and Post-season training. Each seg- ment includes specific goals for all team members in order to improve upon the athlete‘s weaknesses and raise the fitness level for on-ice performance. A major emphasis is placed on developing speed, as well as func- tional power and strength in order for the athlete to reach their highest potential.

Finally the strength and conditioning program not only serves as an imperative way to improve perfor- mance, but is also a critical means to avoid injuries throughout the demanding hockey season.

27 2012-13 Elmira College Women‟s Ice Hockey Murray Athletic Center

A Closer Look at the Murray Athletic Center

The Murray Athletic Center, or the Domes, is the home of the Soaring Eagles Hockey program and has been for the past 30 years. In the summer of 2001 a major renovation pro- ject took place that included new locker rooms and new offices for the hockey program, as well as four new multi- purpose locker rooms and a new sports medicine area. These enhancements to the facility provide the Soaring Eagles with a state-of-the-art locker room which includes individual maple player stalls, a stick room with work bench area, stereo and entertainment center, video editing equipment, coaches offices and meeting area, intercom system, and dehumidification system. The Murray Athletic Center has been one of the premiere Division III hockey facilities in the country and these improvements demonstrate the College's commit- ment to provide the student-athletes with the necessary facilities to support the athletics programs at the College. The Soaring Eagles continue to have one of the highest home attendance averages in the country with fre- quent sell-out crowds. The Domes are a truly unique facil- ity that the Soaring Eagles are happy to call home, and a place where few opponents enjoy much success.
