Redeemer Lutheran The Fist Sunday Church In Advent “Making Him Known” But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on Saturday, November 29, 2014 – 5:30 pm you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Sunday, November 30, 2014 – 8:00 & 10:40 am all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Our Mission Statement: “As Christians based on the solid foundation of God’s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ – welcoming all into our family of believers.”

Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In November, we remember Simeon, as we Make Him Known in our daily lives. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our “Welcome Center” in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer.

SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING will be in all services this weekend. If you would like to have the pastor and elder lay hands upon you and offer a special prayer (for yourself or a loved one), please fill out the blue insert in your bulletin and bring it forward with you as you come to commune. There is also opportunity to make use of the ancient practice of anointing with oil (James 5:14) for those who so desire.

OUR THEME FOR TODAY is "Ms. Shepherd." Children matter! Children are important! Children need to hear about Jesus! Making Him Known to the next generation is not just for parents! All of us take part in this holy work! How will you share the love of Jesus with a child this week?

A SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING WITH HOLY COMMUNION

SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Lesson for the First Sunday In Advent is from Isaiah chapter sixty- four.

1 Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you! 2 As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you! 3 For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you. 4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. 5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved? 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. 7 No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins. 8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be angry beyond measure, Lord; do not remember our sins forever. Oh, look on us, we pray, for we are all your people. Isaiah 64:1-9 NIV

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE READING L: The Epistle Reading is from 2 Timothy the first chapter.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self- discipline. 2 Timothy 1:1-7 NIV

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.)

(*) RESPONSE (LSB 336, st. 1)

(*) GOSPEL READING P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the thirteenth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

24 "But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. ' 26 "At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

-4- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904

32 "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch! '" Mark 13:24-37 NIV

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated.)

Your memory often changes as you grow older, but memory loss that disrupts daily life is not a typical part of aging. It may be a symptom of dementia. Dementia is a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which is the result of loss of brain cells and function. The Alzheimer’s Association lists these ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s:

1. Memory changes that disrupt daily life. 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems. 3. Difficulty in completing familiar tasks. 4. Confusion with time or place. 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. 7. Misplacing things and loosing the ability to retrace steps. 8. Decreased or poor judgment. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. 10. Changes in mood or personality.
