  • Post Camp Riding Tips
Purchasing the Right Bike & Helmet Bike shops offer the best selection of our recommended bikes. A good quality bike is more likely to be ridden because it is more comfortable to ride, and less likely to be in disrepair. The task of selecting a bike can be challenging. Some basic design issues and ideas to consider are listed below. Choose a compact or low-slung frame. This is for ease in getting on and off the bike and may prevent injury in a fall. These bikes often have a lower seat and pedals positioned closer to the ground. They may be called a youth or junior style bike. Avoid competition, freestyle and mountain bikes. They are difficult to ride and not suitable for learning. The bottom bracket (where the pedal crank goes through the frame) is too high off the ground, the pedal cranks are too long and thus the pedals are generally too high off the ground at the top of the pedal stroke. Such designs are geared towards riding the bike while standing up rather than sitting on the seat. For standard 20” bikes, the pedal at it’s highest height should not be more than 17” from the ground. 20” bikes should have only one hand brake connected to the back wheel. A front wheel hand brake can be dangerous and may cause the rider to take a fall over the handlebars. 24” and 26” bikes may have either one or two hand brakes. For this size of bike we recommend single speed bikes in the beach cruiser style.

  • Post Ican Bike Spotting Tips
Post iCan Bike Spotting Tips Practice is the most important component following our program. Of particular importance, we highly encourage you to take your rider out as often as possible immediately following the program. The first few weeks after the program are imperative for sustaining and improving upon the skills just learned. Remember, practice makes permanent! Reminders • Helmets are not optional - always wear a helmet! Parents are the role model for this rule. If you ride, please remember to wear a helmet… remember that your child learns from observing you. • Flat open parking lots or outdoor running tracks make the best practice areas • Minimal obstacles and distractions reduce fear, anxiety and potential falls • Practice 20 minutes or so, don’t overdo it • Make practice fun and celebrate the accomplishments • Always end practice on a positive note (perhaps celebrating their ability to navigate a controlled stop, putting their feet down, dismounting and putting the kick stand down) • Riding, braking and self-starting do not need to be textbook, just effective Our overall goal for the rider is independence. Therefore, provide the least amount of support needed. Our instructions for spotting are designed to remove every small obstacle to reduce fear, anxiety and frustration for the rider. Breaking down each skill to a simple level while encouraging each success will motivate the rider to continue to give it their all while practicing. As the rider progresses, the spotter should be able to provide less and less assistance until spotting is no longer necessary. Document # 1146F 1 Spotting With A Training Handle • Hold the training handle firmly while your rider gets on and off the bike • While holding the handle, have the rider put both feet on the pedals and look forward (we suggest you give them a target to look at).

MIKE DAILYby INTERVIEW BMX SOCIETY.com AGGRO RAG EARLY BMX JUMPING ANTICS DONUTS POETRY PLYWOOD HOODS ‘ ZINES XEROX & VHS MID-LIFE CRISIS REVIVAL AND SURVIVAL BMX LIFE Interview by Steve Brothers & Ma Hanemann Design by Ma Hanemann Summer 2012 Mike Daily airing at Brian’s 1985 (BMXSociety) First, for the benet of those whose BMX focus is mostly on other eras or BMX genres, I’d like to do a quick series of introductory questions. So let’s start from the beginning: Where did you grow up, and tell us a lile bit about your earliest exposure to BMX? Were you a racer in the beginning? (Mike Daily) I was born in Stamford, CT. When I was two years old, my parents moved to York, PA. My brother Chris was born in ‘70. York is where we grew up. From ‘78/’79 on, BMX was prevalent in our area. There weren’t any local race tracks, but there were plenty of places to ride including: Mailman’s (“The Pit” dirt jumping zone, now DAILY a parking lot where annual York Jams are held); The Quarry, a motorcycle-carved canyon of trails and jumps; Dunkin’ Donuts, where we’d set up milk crates and donut racks to clear; the Argento’s Pizza launch; a excavated/sculpted vacant lot behind Best Products; Brian Peters’ quarterpipe ramps; and, of course, Thunderdohm Skatepark. “BMX was prevalent in our area” Starting gate at Dillsburg, PA BMX race track. 1982 “I always dreamed of racing BMX. I practiced for it, non-stop.” I always dreamed of racing BMX.
