Fueling the LGBT Movement since 1980

ANNUALREPORT 2013 2013 WAS A YEAR THAT THE LGBT MOVEMENT SAW PROGRESS COME AT A THRILLING PACE

Letter from the Board Chair & Executive Director

It’s rarely been more thrilling to be part of the LGBT movement than on June 26, 2013, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a key part of the federal Defense of Act and wrote the final chapter on ’s Proposition 8. Since those rulings, thousands of same-sex couples have married in our home state, more than a dozen more states have won marriage equality, and court challenges have been filed in every non-marriage state.

Change is rocketing forward outside the courtrooms as well. Public opinion is tipping more strongly than ever toward equality and fairness, and we’re even hearing new openness from once less-friendly quarters like corporate America, the Republican party, and even the Vatican.

2013 was also a watershed year for Horizons Foundation. The foundation’s grantmaking grew by nearly one-third, and our cumulative grants surpassed $30 million. We launched a groundbreaking effort, funded by the new Global Faith and Equality Fund, to stem the export of religious-based homophobia from the to other parts of the world. Closer to home, we were privileged to make grants to scores of organizations advocating for and serving LGBT people, most right here in our Bay Area home – grants to benefit LGBT people in every part of our community.

2013 proved a strong year in Horizons’ institutional growth as well. Our assets grew a remarkable 30% over 2012. We saw substantial increases in both our Donor-advised Fund Program – which now includes more than 90 funds – and in the LGBT Community Endowment Fund, dedicated to our community’s long-term strength and freedom. More than 250 people have joined the foundation’s Legacy Circle, guaranteeing the Endowment’s continued growth for the future of our community.

The progress of both our movement for equality and Horizons Foundation has been made possible by the gifts and efforts of tens of thousands of LGBT people and our allies. Horizons is proud to be part of this movement and of this community. And we are deeply grateful for the contributions of so many that have gotten us where we are today. Together, we will continue to do what Horizons does best: harness the strength, the generosity, and the potential of the entire Bay Area LGBT community and bring it to bear on the challenges and opportunities that we face both today and in the future.
