Park Avenue 17 2 Surface Runoff urface runoff is water from rain, snowmelt, or other sources that Sflows over the land surface and is a major component of the water cycle. Runoff is what occurs when rain is not absorbed by the ground on which it falls and so then flows downhill. As it does so, it will carry topsoil, nutrients, and any other water-soluble material it encounters as it flows downhill. Eventually runoff water will drain into a stream or river. Runoff that occurs on surfaces before reaching a channel is also called overland flow. All of the land whose runoff water flows into a river or stream is known as that stream's watershed. When runoff flows along the ground, it can pick up soil contaminants such as petroleum, pesticides or fertilizers that become discharge or overland flow. The amount of water that runs off and causes all kinds of problems depends heavily on the amount of rainfall and the type of ground it lands on. Urbanization increases surface runoff, by creating more impervious surfaces such as pavement and buildings which do not allow percolation of water down through the soil to the aquifer. It is instead forced into streams, where erosion and siltation can be major problems, even when floodi ng is not. Increased runoff reduces groundwater recharge, thus lowering the water table and making droughts worse.

Meteorological factors affecting runoff: Physical characteristics affecting runoff: • Type of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, etc.) • Land use • Rainfall intensity • Vegetation • Rainfall amount • Soil type • Rainfall duration • Drainage area • Distribution of rainfall over the drainage basin • Basin shape • Direction of storm movement • Elevation • Precipitation that occurred earlier and resulting soil • Topography, especially the slope of the land moisture • Drainage network patterns • Other meteorological or climatic factors such as • Ponds, lakes & reservoirs in the basin, which prevent or temperature, wind, relative humidity and season delay runoff from continuing downstream

Litter begets litter. Conversely, when a local park or an entire community is litter free, that sends a message that littering is unacceptable behavior. Clean communities tend to stay clean. Here are some ways you can help keep our Borough beautiful. • Set an example by not littering. Carry a litter bag in your car or put litter in your pocket until you find a container. • Pick up one piece of litter every day. • Teach others the proper way to dispose of trash. Show them the difference between a clean area and an area spoiled by litter, and stress why it’s important to put trash in proper containers. • Make sure your trash & recycling roll cart lids are closed. If you have additional trash cans, make sure the cans have lids that can be securely attached. • If you smoke, don’t flick cigarette butts out the car window.

15 4 American Flag Guidelines

Proper Etiquette for Flag Display

In 1942, Congress passed what has come to be known as the U.S. Flag Code. The following are the basics on how we can treat the flag with respect.

deally, an American flag displayed on your house should hang from a staff that angles I out from the front wall or a windowsill or balcony. Do not allow the flag to touch the ground, floor, water, or anything else beneath it. It’s also appropriate to hang the flag from a horizontal staff. Be sure the union or canton (the rectangle with the stars) is at the peak -- hanging the flag with the union down signals extreme distress.

When the flag is displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be at the top and to your left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be hung so that the union is on the left when you see it from the street.

If you display the American flag next to other flags or pennants, place it on the right side of a single flag or at the center of a group and slightly higher than the other flags. If an American flag is on the same staff as other flags, it should always be at the top.

When displayed from a car or float in a parade, the flagstaff should be fixed firm ly to the vehicle, ideally on the right side. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides or back.

Though it is customary to fly the flag from sunrise to sunset, the U.S. Code says that when a patriotic effect is desired, you can display it around the clock. If you do, you should illuminate the flag with a light.

When our President declares the flag is to be flown at half-staff this means the flag is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

And finally, when the American flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

13 6 American Flag Guidelines

5 14 Surface Runoff urface runoff is water from rain, snowmelt, or other sources that Sflows over the land surface and is a major component of the water cycle.

Bethlehem Pike ~ Ambler, PA 19002 Sat: 10am-4pm Research has shown that litter attracts litter. 215-646-7050 ~ 215-646-7644 fax www.marosfloorcovering.com When a community or area is frequently littered or illegal dumping is tolerated, that sends a message that this kind of behavi or is acceptable.
