Asad Umar tipped as finance minister Page No.19 Col No.02 RECORDER REPORT ISLAMABAD: After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as a major seat winning party, the names of some prominent PTI leaders have surfaced who will be part of Imran Khan’s cabinet after he will take oath as prime minister in the first or second week of August. The sources said that Khan has indicated to keep its cabinet short consisting of some 20 ministers and a few advisers, which may be expanded at some later stage if needed. Dr Arif Alvi and Shafqat Mahmood are said to be the strong contender for the slot of speaker National Assembly while Zartaj Gul Wazir, an MNA from Dera Ghazi Khan, may be elected as deputy speaker. Shah Mehmood Qureshi is a strong contender for the slot of foreign minister. Asad Umar’s elevation as finance minister is a done deal as Imran Khan had announced it long before elections. Former Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak’s name is being considered for the slot of interior minister given his performance as chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 2013 to 2018. However, if Khattak is appointed as chief minister KP again, Shafqat Mahmood may be handpicked as interior minister. Dr Shireen Mazari may be elevated as federal minister for information, while Fawad Chaudhry may also be elevated in the federal cabinet but his portfolio is yet to be decided. For the slot of defense minister, the party is yet to identify anyone. The party is considering to give railways ministry to Sheikh Rasheed of Awami Muslim League who stood by Khan through thick and thin throughout his five years struggle against Nawaz Sharif government. The sources have said that Makhdoom Khushro Bakhtiyar, Murad Saeed, Senator Chaudhry Sarwar, Azam Swati, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Ramesh Kumar, Amir Liaquat Hussain and Shahriyar Afridi are also expected to be included in the federal cabinet. Malik Ameen Aslam will be handpicked as adviser to the prime minister on environment given his contribution in Billion Tree Tsunami project which turned the tide of ecological ruin all over in KP. .

Media Monitoring Findings' Report
Media Monitoring Findings’ Report 1 Summary Society for Alternative Media and Research (SAMAR), initiated a media monitoring project with the support of Open Society Foundation (OSF) keeping in view the cross-ownership and control of media by different actors which are restricting the necessary and desirable participatory opportunities to the citizens in order to strengthen democratic process in Pakistan. A monitoring and analysis system was established and daily monitoring of news and views contents of eight private TV news channels and eight newspapers (three English, three Urdu and two Sindhi language newspapers) was done by trained monitors. The monitoring and analysis process was supervised time to time by Independent Citizens’ Media Commission comprising of 11 media experts, academia and civil society leaders. So far, the trends/findings of monitoring of both print and electronic mainstream media are: 1. Almost same pattern and sequel for broadcasting news and same format and topic for talk shows on all TV news channels to discuss current affairs was found. Viewers watch and listen to, more or less, same persons at every channel who are presented as experts of all aspects of life. 2. Out of proportion coverage of political affairs largely consisting of differences among political parties, opposing statements of political leaders and allegation and counter- allegation of corruption, image building of military establishment and promoting its point of view on national security, and fanning hatred against neighboring countries and promoting jingoism. 3. Largely, focused on big cities particularly Karachi and Lahore whereas people and issues of mainland or rural Pakistan are hardly made topic of the news and discussion.

Pakistan is a key ally in U.S.-led counterterrorism efforts. The history of democracy in Pakistan is a troubled one marked by ongoing tripartite power struggles among presidents, prime ministers, and army chiefs. Military regimes have ruled Pakistan directly for 34 of the country’s 60 years in existence, and most observers agree that Pakistan has no sustained history of effective constitutionalism or parliamentary democracy. In 1999, the democratically elected government of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted in a bloodless coup led by then-Army Chief Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who later assumed the title of president. In 2002, Supreme Court-ordered parliamentary elections—identified as flawed by opposition parties and international observers—seated a new civilian government, but it remained weak, and Musharraf retained the position as army chief until his November 2007 retirement. Media Tracking Report 28 Dec, 2020 - 15 Jan, 2021 Education in Pakistan Govt announces phase-wise opening of educational institutions from Jan 18 - DAWN The country's education ministers, in a meeting, decided to reopen educational institutions in the country in phases from January 18. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, cautioned that more precautions were needed to control the spread of Covid-19, since data showed that closing the educational institutions earlier had led to a "delay in [the spread of] the virus". In a separate press conference, Punjab Minister for School Education Dr Murad Raas termed the 50 per cent attendance policy "the most important thing", saying that schools were being opened "not because the coronavirus situation [had improved] but because the children were incurring huge educational losses".
