All data is processed by STR using both the current and historical sampling of hotels. For further questions about the methodology used to produce our reports, please email [email protected].

Average Daily Rate (ADR) Room revenue divided by rooms sold, displayed as the average rental rate for a single room.

Census (properties and rooms) The number of properties and rooms that exist in our database for the area(s) or segment(s) shown on the report.

Country A geographic area that has internationally recognized boundaries, an organized economy, and a sovereign government with external recognition. It is typically recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Custom Segments Defined by a + at the end of the segment name. If a custom segment is based on a selected group of properties, new properties that come into the area will NOT automatically be added to this segment. The new property can be added alone as long as it has no more than five months of data. Once the property has six or more months of data it is considered an established property, requiring a two property change (add one/drop one or add two).

Demand (Rooms Sold) The number of rooms sold or rented (excludes complimentary rooms).

Exchange Rate The factor used to convert revenue from U.S. Dollars to the local currency. The exchange rate data is obtained from Oanda.com. Any aggregated number in the report (YTD, Running 3 month, Running 12 month) uses the exchange rate of each relative month when calculating the data.

Index Index (Occupancy, ADR, RevPar) - Property performance divided by competitive set performance multiplied by 100. Internationally, indexes are also referred to as MPI – Market Penetration Index (Occupancy Index), ARI – Average Rate Index (ADR Index), and RGI – Revenue/RevPAR Generation Index (RevPAR Index).

Market A geographic area within a country. Markets are defined by STR and STR Global.

Occupancy (Occ) Rooms sold divided by rooms available multiplied by 100. Occupancy is always expressed as a percentage of rooms occupied.

Percent Change Amount of growth - up, flat, or down - this period versus same period last year (month or year-to-date). Calculated as ((TY - LY) / LY) * 100.

Event Summary

On April 23, 2016 the Third Annual Fiesta Bowl Rugby & Balloon Classic: Presented By Mercedes- Benz of Scottsdale continued to grow and maintain its standing as the biggest rugby event in the Southwest. Some 5,600 people passed through the gates during the day that featured three matches.

The event, held at Scottsdale Stadium, the home of the Champion , hosted an event unlike any other in its 24-year existence. The stadium transformed from a world-class baseball venue into a world-class rugby venue. The event not only featured collegiate and international rugby competition, but also offered fans the chance to catch Arizona’s next wave of rugby stars.

Gates opened at 1pm with the Arizona High School Division II match between Northern Arizona and the Old Pueblo Lions (Tucson), followed by the Division I match between the Red Mountain Knights and Desert Vista. The competition continued with Arizona State University taking on Los Serpientes from the Mexican National Team in an unprecedented college vs. country match, never before seen in Arizona. As the match concluded 30 / 23 Mexico, larger-than-life Darth Vader and Yoda hot air balloons graced the field for a unique and one-of-a-kind glow.

Earlier this year the Tourism Development Commission unanimously recommended the use of $75,000 in voter-approved tourism tax funds specified for new events. The recommendation was subsequently and unanimously approved by the Scottsdale City Council. Free tickets were distributed to Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau member hotels for their guests. And, the event provided complimentary tickets to all City of Scottsdale employees and Scottsdale Unified School District faculty and staff, as well as specifically to all students at Supai Elementary.

As will be seen from the details of this Summary Report, Scottsdale received a substantial return on its investment via abundant earned media, direct marketing, City revenues and numerous other impacts.

Furthermore, there can be little doubt about other benefits for Scottsdale too. They include:

* Reinforcement and positioning of the downtown Scottsdale brand for tourists and residents as a dynamic area via association with 2016’s most interesting rugby event, with the name of the event including “Scottsdale.”

* Showcasing Scottsdale Stadium as a premier event venue.

* Showcasing the Saguaro Hotel which served as the host hotel for teams, players and guests.

* New event-within-the-event additions this year included a Hot Air Balloon Glow.

* A unique, memorable experience for faculty, staff, parents and children of the Scottsdale Unified School District, who were the guests of the event at no charge.

* Active and retired military were also provided complimentary admission to the event.
