YOUNG GUNS BEGIN TITLE QUEST

 Day 4: Young Guns and begin their title quest on Thursday at the Swiss Open Gstaad. Leading of play on Centre Court is Spanish /No. 7 seed Pablo Carreno Busta and Dutch Robin Haase. Following the Austrian / No. 3 seed Thiem meets Argentinian Federico Delbonis for the first time. The third match features the No. 6 seed Joao Sousa of Portugal and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. In the last match top seed Goffin takes on Argentinian qualifier . All together there are eight matches scheduled (4 singles, 4 doubles). .  Goffin Makes Debut: For the second straight week Goffin is the top seed in an ATP World Tour tournament. Last week in Bastad the 24-year-old Belgian fell to eventual champion Benoit Paire 62 63 in his opening round match (after bye). Goffin is ranked a career-high No. 14 and this season he reached the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Mahut), SFs in Chennai and QFs in Munich and ATP Masters 1000 Rome. He has a 21-16 match record on the season (8-6 on clay). He’s also helped Belgium into the semi-finals (vs. Argentina in September).

 Thiem on a Roll: Thiem, who captured the Umag title on Sunday, last year came into Gstaad after breaking the Top 50 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Now the 21-year-old is a career-high No. 24 after his second title in three months. In May, he captured his maiden ATP World Tour title in Nice. He’s also reached the quarter-finals in Marseille, ATP Masters 1000 Miami and Munich.

 Born in 1990s Winners: At Umag, Thiem became the fifth player born in the 1990s to win multiple ATP World Tour titles. This year Jiri Vesely at Auckland (d. Mannarino) and at Houston (d. Querrey)) are the other two winners born in the 90s to win an ATP World Tour title. Last year Federico Delbonis (1): Sao Paulo and David Goffin (2): Kitzhbuhel, Metz where two of the five born in 90s winners.
