ii Preface

All of my ancestors, going back at least to 1590, were German Jews – a 350 year legacy. Of that thirteen generation legacy, three were decimated in the Holocaust. In researching my family tree, the magnitude of that personal destruction emerged. How many family members were murdered or lost in that horrible time?

Over 650 family members, including their spouses and children, perished in the Holocaust. Approximately 1,000 other uncles, aunts and cousins were probably living in Europe in the 1930s. I have thus far found no evidence of their fate.

This is one of a series of reports, each based on the descendants of one to four ancestral couples. It details my findings. For those who perished, detailed source information is presented. For those whose fate is unknown, the known, often sparse, details are included. My intention is to spur further efforts to discover the fate of those who may or may not have survived.

This report covers the descendants of Jakob Moyses born before 1736 and his wife Sara who gave birth to the Cahn, Heilberg, Lahrberg, Löwenstein and Stern families of Meudt, , . It is based on a family tree that originated with one prepared by Stefan Aßman of Meudt and included in 900 Jahre Meudt 1097 - 1997 edited by Stefan Aßman, Wolf-Dieter Endlein, Helge Roos, Günter Steigerwald, Bernhard Wirth and Antonius Wolf. The resultant tree is the consolidated work of many, including members of Geni.com and Ancestry.com, individual family members, and especially the efforts of cousins Sally Bruckheimer, Gerald Stern and Ted Tobias.

As research continues, I intend to periodically update this report. I will be happy to act as a clearing house for other researchers so that their information can be included in the whole.

As in all genealogical work, there are errors and omissions. There are examples of information later proved incorrect even in credible resources like the Gedenkbuch. Please report any disputed information so that corrections can be incorporated in future editions, or, if a resolution cannot be found, so that the dispute can be noted. I can be reached at [email protected].

This report includes:

· A list of the 142 victims of the Holocaust developed from research tools identified below. Source footnotes are at the end of this list. Each individual is indicated as follows:

o Perished in Holocaust: A source reports that the individual died. The date and place of death is usually included.

o Perished in Holocaust: Suicide: A source reports that the individual committed suicide. 1 o Perished in Holocaust: Suicide: A source reports that the individual committed suicide. The date and place of death is usually included. It is thought that many of these individuals were actually murdered, but reported as suicides.

o Presumed Perished in Holocaust: A source reports that the individual was deported to one or a sequence of camps but does not include information on their death. The date of death is listed as a range from the date of last transport to 1945.

· A list of the 200 family members whose fate in the Holocaust is unknown. This was assembled by identifying those likely in Europe in the 1930s and eliminating those whose fate could be determined. Source footnotes are at the end of this list. The information on these individuals is quite limited; any additional facts that may be helpful in determining their fate.

· An index of all family members mentioned in this report appears at the end.

A register of the descendants of Jakob and Sara is available. I will provide it upon request with the condition that information on any living individuals may not be posted on the Internet and must be kept private.

Internet sites used in researching this document include:

· Gedenkbuch http://www.bundesarchiv.de/gedenkbuch/directory.html, The Gedenkbuch was originally a 4 volume list, prepared from Nazi records, of those missing or perished in the Holocaust. It is offered by Das Bundesarchiv, the German national archive. The online version is fully searchable by a variety of facts including name, birth day and/or town, residence town, date of transport or date of death.

· Yad Vashem, the Jewish people’s living memorial to the Holocaust provides The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names http://db.yadvashem.org/names/search.html?language=en, This database includes information from the Gedenkbuch, Joods Monument and a variety of other sources as well as Pages of Testimony by family and researchers giving information on missing and perished

2 individuals.

· Stern and Löbl Family Genealogy Website http://sternmail.co.uk/genealogy/index.html This web site has the information first prepared by Stefan Assman of Meudt with substantial follow-on research by Gerald Stern and other family members.

· holocaust.cz http://www.holocaust.cz/en/main, The database contains names and fates of Jews deported from the Bohemian Lands and of the prisoners of the Terezín (Theresienstadt) ghetto from other European countries.

· The Association for the Study of the History of the Jews in Southern Germany and Adjoining Areas http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/ This site has substantial information about Jewish communities, synagogues and cemeteries.

· Jews in Nord-Hessen www.jinh.site50.net This site focuses on the Jewish communities of North Hessen and their families and has a substantial number of family trees assembled from original data sources and a wide variety of other Jewish culture research.

· Google www.Google.com No explanation needed. There are many websites covering the Jewish communities of individual towns, which I found by Googling for individuals who were mentioned in these websites. More often than not, I found new information on others in the community as well.

The following page is a chart of the Dynasty of Jakob Moyses and Sara of Meudt kindly provided by Gerald Stern. It shows how the various members of this family took on surnames and formed the family lines in the early 1800’s. My special thanks to Gerald for all his assistance.

New life in Belgium: Julius Meyer Julius Meyer (b. 1912) was the second exile of the Meyer family. He was obviously a Generation of young Jews who recognized early on that they had no future in Germany, and therefore were willing to seek their chance abroad. However, his career was the fact addition, once to take over his father's business. His experience in agriculture and Livestock industry, he also studied abroad for use as a livelihood. He emigrated in 1936 across the Belgian border to La Calamine in the triangle south-west of Aachen, directly the Belgian border, where Louis Meyer foresight to a house in the bungalow style had bought. Julius managed a farm in La Calamine. But after some time He seems to stay near the German border to have become too dangerous, so he moved with his father to Rocourt, near Liege. After Meyer and Rosa had fled, finally gathered during a visit to the Richards family in Rocourt Meyer, with the exception of the son Charles.

The internment of Louis and Julius Meyer in France At the beginning of World War 2 ended the deceptive calm in Belgium. On 09/04/1940, a day before the start of the "campaign of 18 days," were about 20,000 Jewish immigrants and refugees deported from Belgium and the French government in various camps interned in southern France, among them Louis and Julius Meyer. They were first in St. Cyprien camp held near Perpignan. The camp was, like the Gur camp, originally been built for the reception of refugees from the Spanish Civil War and then served the internment of Jews. Broke in the summer in St. Cyprien, a typhus- Epidemic, both Meyers survived. On the Internet accessible lists of Commandant of St. Cyprien in October 1940 docked, Louis Meyer is not listed, However, Julius, who at that time probably already in the camp Gurs or at large was. End of October 1941 Louis Meyer in the infamous camp at Gurs Pau came on foot the Pyrenees. There, the supply situation was dire. After all, succeeded Julius, his father partly to supply food. For he had shortly after his release in the near Toulouse leased a farm. In August 1942 Louis Meyer also released Has set foot, about a week before his son Julius deported. Deportation and death of Julius Meyer "Le Baron" of the farm was in Nailloux (about 35 miles southeast of Toulouse on the edge of the Pyrenees), which had leased and managed Julius Meyer. Julius, who now Jules named set, even a support staff. But all of a sudden he was on Aug 21 1942 in stock Muret, near Toulouse, and interned at 1 September with a special train Drancy brought. In this town, 20 km northeast of Paris, had the German occupation set up a concentration camp, from where most of about 65,000 German Jews France were deported to extermination camps. In June 1942, the Vichy government the German government pledged that they made of 10,000 stateless Jews and foreign deliver the "free zone" of the occupying power in the north would. It is still unclear how succeeded to the French authorities by surprise, Julius Meyer, so that he "voluntarily" Like his father said, made available for transportation. Documented is 54 Victims of the Holocaust "voluntarily" Like his father said, made available for transportation. Documented is that Julius Meyer was deported on September 4, 1942 with the No. 28 transport to Auschwitz. On the ramp in Auschwitz was selected Julius apparently for the labor camp. A report an Auschwitz survivor, according to Julius Meyer until the evacuation of the camp Auschwitz between the 17th 21/01/1945 and after the death march from Auschwitz Dachau have perished.
