Requirements for Practice Education

 Have a recognised professional qualification.

 Have access to a network of support and supervision to enable them to fulfil their practice education responsibilities.

 Assess student competency in collaboration with the evidence / feedback provided by other colleagues.

 Provide regular verbal and written feedback to the student on their progress and development.

 Complete the assessment documentation when required, verifying the level of student achievement.

For Nurses and Midwives:

 Meet arrangements for annual update and criteria for Triennial review.

 40% of the student’s time on placement must be supported directly or indirectly by a named mentor.

Inter-professional learning is defined ”as occasions when two or more professionals learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care“(CAIPE 1997)

“…..All health professionals [should] learn together for effective collaborative practice. Inter-professional education focuses on the needs of the patient and helps professionals to develop the mutual trust and respect which promotes good communication and collaborative working, so crucial for patient safety. It can also inform joint action to improve services and instigate change” (CAIPE 2013)

 Acknowledge students will present as failing and that time should be allowed to develop them.

 Processes MUST be followed to ensure fairness of assessment (initial / mid / final interviews, alongside regular feedback and recorded actions).

 This can be an emotional time for all involved. Use your PEF and the student Academic Advisor / Personal Tutor where necessary.

 There is a professional responsibility to fail a failing student.

Your Portfolio / Revalidation: Discussion Hints & Tips Point  You need to collate a portfolio of evidence to evidence how you meet the requirements of your regulatory body e.g. NMC.

 The following revalidation examples can be used as evidence: . Feedback from students or other mentors or PEFs . CPD - attendance at mentor programme / annual update . CPD - discussions with other mentors regarding students and their assessment (participatory) . CPD - Minutes from meetings where students are present or discussed . Written reflective account on feedback from student . Written reflective account on your experience as a mentor . Written reflective account on your CPD activity
