Sam Moore BIO For years Sam Moore was best known for his work with the historic soul duo Sam & Dave. The rapid-fire style, built on the call and response of gospel, was fashioned and pioneered by Sam and became the trademark of the duo. Songs like Hold On I’m Coming, I Thank You, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, Soul Sister, Brown Sugar, Wrap It Up and his monster hit Soul Man catapulted them up both the Pop and R & B Charts. Sam & Dave sold more than 10 million records worldwide. The music and sound of Sam & Dave became so popular that the duo served as the inspiration for The Blues Brothers parody by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. Though he has tremendous love and respect for the music he created as “the voice” of the duo, Sam, who has been called “the blast furnace of soul,” has maintained his appeal and his stardom as a solo artist and continues to tour scoring critical acclaim for his work. He recorded Rainy Night In Georgia, as a duet with Conway Twitty, which earned them a platinum record as well as two Country Music Association Awards nominations. This was Twitty’s last recording. The Grammy Award winner has countless television appearances globally including The Leno Show, Late Night With David Letterman, Later With Jools, The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, The Grammys and many others. Sam has also appeared in several major movies including One Trick Pony, Tapeheads, Blues Brothers 2000 and Night of The Golden Eagle. A documentary filmed by the legendary D.A.

  • Administration of Barack Obama, 2013 Remarks at PBS's
Administration of Barack Obama, 2013 Remarks at PBS's "In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul" April 9, 2013 Everybody, please have a seat. And give it up for our musical director, Booker T. and the Memphis Soul all-stars. I just want everybody to know that it is now my second term, so rather than "Hail to the Chief," we're going with that from here on out. [Laughter] Little change in tradition. Now, before we get started, I am going to exercise some Presidential prerogative to say a few words about two very special people who are here tonight. This will humiliate them, but I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway. Jess Wright and Kenny Thompson both work on my staff, crucial members of my team since way back in Iowa in 2007. Over the weekend, Kenny popped the question, and Jess said yes. So I want to congratulate—publicly—Kenny Thompson, Jess Wright. Beautiful couple. We love them. They are wonderful. They've been loyal, shown such great friendship to me, and I'm so glad that they have gone ahead and taken the plunge. By the way, guys, Justin Timberlake just got married to this lovely young lady right here, Jessica Biel. So Justin can probably offer you a few pointers. And, Justin, they are looking for a wedding singer. [Laughter] I'm just saying. Tonight I am speaking not just as a President, but as one of America's best known Al Green impersonators. [Laughter] So I have a new appreciation for what Al once said about the Memphis soul sound that he helped create: "We don't even know ourselves how that music has endured for so long and how that came out of us." All I know is I've been looking forward to tonight because, let's face it, who does not love this music? These songs get us on the dance floor.

Van Tatenhove, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky, sitting by designation. No. 12-5715 Moore v. Weinstein Co. COOK, Circuit Judge. Plaintiff-appellant Sam Moore, half of the 1960s and ’70s music duo “Sam & Dave” that sang the well-known songs “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “Soul Man,” appeals an adverse judgment on his trademark-infringement and common-law claims against the producers and distributors of “Soul Men,” a 2008 fictional film starring actors Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac (the “Movie”), and its accompanying soundtrack (the “Soundtrack”). Moore appeals five claims that center on a common theme: the Movie and Soundtrack infringed his unregistered trademarks of variations of the phrase “Soul Men,” and appropriated his life story for defendants- appellees’ pecuniary gain. For the following reasons, we AFFIRM the district court’s grant of summary judgment. I. Sam Moore is a renowned entertainer. Signed with his coperformer Dave Prater by Atlantic Records in 1965, the duo released a 1967 album titled “Sam & Dave Soul Men” that included their hit single “Soul Man.” Sam & Dave, also known as “Double Dynamite,” recorded music in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Stax Records company.
