LETTER FROM THE MINISTRY TEAM Dear Friends We have rejoiced in Christmas and the birth of our Saviour, the adoration of the angels and the visit of the shepherds. We have lived again, the Epiphany of the Wise Men. We have happily sung carols to celebrate these momentous events. We now come to March, the month of winds and the burgeoning of Spring. The Spring season officially starts on Wednesday 20th March. We have marvelled at the brave blossoms of tiny snowdrops growing through frost hardened soil, and the splashes of colour made by the aconites. Throughout Spring, we see new birth everywhere, the new buds on the fruit trees, and numerous spring flowers. I wonder whether William Wordsworth was wandering lonely as a cloud on a bright March morning when he came across the host of golden daffodils. We can see these beautiful blooms already in our gardens and along the verges in our county. We also see little lambs in the fields. Such lovely little creatures gambolling and skipping around their mothers. To see these creatures reminds me of the Lamb of God who, as silent as a lamb, went to the cross for us!! On Mothering Sunday, I think of Mary, His mother and the agony she must have felt watching Him die. Motherhood is never easy, but brings such joy, and sorrow too. When we hold that little bundle dressed in warm clothes and surrounded by a shawl, we never think, that one day, that little bundle will grow and go his or her own way and leave us. We all want the best for our children, I would suggest that the best for them is belief in Jesus Christ our Saviour who will never leave us. There is a saying which goes, 'A new baby, is God's promise that the world will go on'. Looking around at the new life of Spring, who can doubt this? FROM THE REGISTERS We welcome into the family of the Church by baptism: At Hackthorn on 20 January - George Mark Cox & Arthur Robert Cox At Glentham on 27 January - Oakley Rose Sorrell

PRAYER FOCUS FOR MARCH I pray... that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. Signpost 3

EXTRA SERVICES DURING MARCH Wednesday 6th March 9.30am at Spridlington Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter. During Lent we often give something up but it is also an opportunity to set aside time and distractions to concentrate on God. We mark this important day with a service of Holy Communion during which we are marked with the sign of the cross made out of ash. A reminder of God's love shown in Jesus' death that restores us to new life and gives us a new start. Sunday 31st March 11.00am at Owmby Mothering Sunday Family Service Join us at Owmby for our group service as we come together to give thanks for our Mothers. During the service posies will be distributed and after the service we hope you can stay and join us in refreshments. ALL ARE WELCOME No matter how long you have travelled in the wrong direction, you can always turn around. 4 Signpost

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ARCHDEACON OF BOSTON The Cracks Are Where The Light Gets In The other day I was very cross with myself for getting a parking ticket. I know why it happened - I hadn't looked at the sign and I just assumed there wouldn't be parking restrictions on a Sunday morning. But it really happened because I was preoccupied and rushing. I had too many things to do and not enough time to do everything. The parking ticket was a signal to me that cracks were appearing in my carefully constructed life. For St Peter it was a cockerel that was the signal that things were going terribly wrong. As we approach Easter we remember the story of how Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus was arrested at night and Peter followed after him, but then lost his nerve and pretended he didn't know him. When the cockerel crowed, Peter remembered Jesus telling him this would happen and Peter broke down and wept. Leonard Cohen (1934-2016) in his song 'Anthem' famously writes that 'There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in'. When cracks appear in our lives they often signal a time when light can emerge. Peter is usually described as the disciple who denied Jesus three times, but Peter's failure and brokenness is not the end of his story. The light got into Peter's story because of what he remembered in the darkest place and what he learned. When the cockerel crowed he remembered that Jesus knew him well enough to know that he would let him down. But it wasn't the only thing Peter remembered. Peter remembered that Jesus predicted that he would suffer and die - it wasn't all his fault. Peter remembered the time when Jesus rescued him from drowning in Lake Galilee and pulled him through. Peter remembered that at the Last Supper Jesus had also told him that he had prayed for him, that his faith would not fail. After a long dark night the cockerel reminded Peter he had let Jesus down but it also heralded the break of day. Peter's experience and hope meant he was restored and became a great pastor. My parking ticket signalled a crack which I should notice, and as I have done many times before, readjust my timetable to be more life giving. When you next notice a crack in yourself or another, remember there is a space now, for the light to come in. The Ven. PRIMARY SCHOOL Our pupils have definitely been getting into the rhythm of the year after the great start provided by Young Voices. Key Stage 2 have been learning to play Samba rhythms with the help of Mrs Clifford from Music Services who has been visiting us on a Friday afternoon. She has also been introducing Key Stage 1 to playing percussion and singing, which is giving them a fantastic musical grounding. February was also time for the annual visit of the Young Shakespeare company. Every year it becomes more difficult to decide whether it is them, or our pupils who are the most excited to see one another! This year they introduced us to Hamlet and , as always, the children showed real enthusiasm for the whole experience which gives them the opportunity to take part as well as learn. It is always an exciting event when any pupil received their handwriting pen at our Friday assemblies, but this year we had an unprecedented occasion when a Year 3 student collected this special mark of achievement! These pens are not given away lightly, so to receive one at that stage in your education shows brilliant application and diligent work. Well done! We will be holding our increasingly popular pre-school Easter Activity Afternoon on Wednesday 27th March from 1:30pm until 2:30. This is an excellent opportunity for all who are exploring their options for September 2019 to discover what our school is all about. at 'big school'. Our pupils will make you all welcome, but booking is essential as places are highly sought after. Our end of term Easter service will take place at 2pm in Hackthorn Church on Friday 5th April, where you are welcome to join us in a feast of music and singing in celebration of the most important time in the Christian calendar. Contact the school on 01673 860295 to arrange a visit, request a School Brochure or you can contact us via the website www.hackthorn.lincs.sch.uk

The Chair of the Community Park Committee, Keith Hanson, attended and gave an update of the progress of the field, but sowing grass seed will have to wait until March, as long as the weather is suitable. Keith thanked everyone who had helped contribute towards the successful event held on 8th February in the school and outlined ideas for future fundraising events. Keith was thanked for his report. District Councillor Jeff Summers reported that the new Lea Crematorium is making good progress and should be open in 2020. WLDC has more Neighbourhood Plans completed than any other District Council, with more coming through. There is a Community Asset Fund available where groups can bid for 80% of the cost of the project up to £8,000. It is hoped that improved medical facilities in may happen soon. WLDC has a Lottery bid in for approximately £1.5m to regenerate Gainsborough. Jeff said thanks were due to Alwyn Coles for the improvements to the front and carpark of the Bottle and Glass. The Market Rasen Leisure Centre has the go-ahead and Outreach facilities will be putting on classes in villages which request them. How to deal with food waste is still under discussion - whether to combine it with the green waste or having separate bins, wagons and crews to collect it. No decisions have been made yet of how to deal with Scampton Air Base when it closes. County Councillor Lewis Strange reported that Highways are repairing more potholes and sinking roads than ever before, but there is still a lot more work to do. Older people and children services have been given a very good OFSTED report. Unfortunately Council Tax will rise by 4%. Due to the recent crimes committed in Normanby, it was agreed to ask for more police presence and to have street lights on during the hours of darkness, without having to pay £300 per light - which could cost residents £58 per property. The dog bin by the telephone exchange has been replaced for the last time by WLDC as previous bins have been vandalised or stolen. In future the Parish Council would have to purchase one. A Spring Litter Pick has been arranged for Sunday March 24th, starting at 2pm. Could anyone interested please contact Cllr Linda Houtby on 878493 so equipment can be ordered. The date of the next meeting which will be both the Annual Parish and the Annual Parish Council meetings has been arranged for Wednesday 15th May Nadine Fox, Clerk to the Parish Council

NORMANBY BY SPITAL PRIMARY SCHOOL What an enthusiastic start to the year. Children have embraced their new topics and learning with such enthusiasm. Busy Bees children and Discovery children have started to find out whether a healthy body means a healthy mind. They will consider being physically healthy and start walking a 'daily mile' as a school. They will also explore healthy food choices and lifestyle choices and will investigate the health implications of a sugary diet, develop some healthy lunchbox ideas as well as tasting new foods. Voyager class are exploring the culture of Ancient Egypt. What was it like to live so long ago? How did people farm? What clothes did the Ancient Egyptians wear? How did people travel? They will naturally be investigating the role of the pyramids, why were they built? And how were they built? Tutankhamun will help them to understand the life of a pharoah. Comparisons between Ancient Egypt and Egypt today will be made. Endeavour class are answering the essential question - Is technology changing childhood? They will be thinking about what childhood means to them and how it may be different for children around the world. They will be investigating what impact the rapid advancement of technology is having on the lives of children and discussing whether these changes are positive or negative. As part of this topic they will try to rekindle some of the lost games and traditions of childhood in the past such as making pen-pals in other schools or countries and creating their own twist on old fashioned playground games. We look forward to seeing all the work they produce. A huge thank you to all those people who supported the Christmas fair, we are so pleased to say we raised enough to buy 2 more laptops for the pupils and fund for the coach to take Voyager on their class trip to Auditorium. An amazing amount thank you. Our next fund raising event is the Valentine Disco. Who will be crowned King and Queen? The children have now had a term of Ukulele and Spanish lessons. The children have been very keen to share their thoughts about the sessions…. Ukulele is 'fun'….'we've learnt the names of the strings and what the parts of the ukulele are called'….'The activities are fun'. Spanish lessons are….. 'good because I've wanted to learn Spanish for a long time' …… 'Miss Payne talks to us all the time in Spanish'….'we sing lots of songs'. We look forward to many more lessons. We have also had a successful term of After School Clubs. The children are very keen to extend their skills or learn new ones in football, SATs and gymnastics or just chill at film club. We asked the children for some feedback on the clubs they attend and they were very keen to share their thoughts……'Football is good and we learn lots of new skills'….' Tom is very caring and makes football fun for all the different ages'…..'I really like gymnastics club, it feels like a daily workout so I don't have to do it when I get home!'……'we do lots of different activities'……'at film club we can eat snacks and rest. SATs club is very well attended and run to help support and hopefully increase the children's confidence in themselves and make them more prepared for the tests. The children enjoy it because ' We get to eat snacks and treats whilst learning!' Thank you to all those involved in running and supporting after school clubs. Thank you to Lincoln City Football club and the members of staff who run these clubs. If you would like come and see for yourself what goes on here, please don't hesitate to arrange a visit by speaking to Jacqui on 01673 878216. We have Busy Bees which caters for children aged 3 years and above. Hours of attendance for pre school children can be chosen flexibly to suit your needs.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER (International and Interdenominational) We welcome everyone to the World Day of Prayer Service which has been prepared by the Christian Women of Slovenia. This year the service is being held at Methodist Church Glentham Friday 1st March at 7:00 p.m. The theme for this year is ‘Come - Everything is Ready!’ Everything is ready and the invitation is for everyone - men, women and children of all ages to join this day of prayer. Women of Slovenia, one of the smallest and youngest countries in Europe, have prepared this year's service and they encourage us to reflect on the barriers they have faced since the end of the Second World War when their country was a part of Yugoslavia, a Marxist socialist republic. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. Everyone is welcome to attend the service.

WELTON FAMILY HEALTH CENTRE NEWS DNA - In January, almost 98% of patients attend the surgery for their appointments. We would like to thank these patients for attending or cancelling appointments that they were unable to make so the slot could be re-booked by another patient. Unfortunately, 83 patients still failed to attend for their appointments which would have meant an extra 14 hours of available appointments. Please sign up for our text messaging service so we can send you reminders before your appointment. It is free and easy to do - please see reception for more details. PRACTICE NURSE DEBBIE - We are also saying a fond farewell to our Practice Nurse Debbie this month as she retires from the practice after 22 years. Many of you may have seen Debbie as a general nurse or in her travel clinic and she will be greatly missed by staff and patients. We wish her well in her retirement. As a direct link to this our travel services may be somewhat limited until we are able to find a suitable replacement. If you are going on holiday and think you may need vaccinations then please give us plenty of notice and complete a form from reception or our website as soon as you have booked your holiday. RECEPTION STAFF - Our reception staff have attended some formal signposting training this month to enable them to direct patients to the most appropriate medical care. The staff have been asked by the Partners to ask patients for a reason for their appointment so they are able to book them in with the most appropriate health professional -this may be a Pharmacist (in the surgery or at the chemist), Physio, Healthcare Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, GP or a variety of other resources that are available to the NHS. This does not mean that the reception staff are trying to be intrusive, and by giving them as much information as you are able may mean they can get you seen much sooner. Please be aware that any information you give is STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL and you can also ask to speak to the reception staff in a private area away from reception. If you feel that it is an issue that is extremely private and you do not wish to say what it is, then of course this will be respected. We expect to roll out this training in the forthcoming months and we would be grateful for patients support and co-operation. STAFF TRAINING - The surgery will be closed for staff training from 1pm on Tuesday 19th March 2019 until 8am on Wednesday 20th March 2019. When considering the staff training afternoon, please could we ask that you order any medication with as much notice as possible to enable us to meet the tight deadlines that we face. A minimum of two working days' notice is required please. For those that don't already use the service, we have facilities to order your medication online at any time, please see Dispensary for more details.
