A path leads down the cliff to a small beach which is mainly shingle with sand at lower levels. There is a slipway and an old engine shed, which used to hoist fish to the top of the cliff.

Further along are caves under the cliffs and the impressive Kaim of Mathers. This was described by Nigel Tranter in The Queen’s Scotland, The Eastern Counties (Hodder & Stoughton Ltd – 1972): “... the ancient and famous castle called Kaim of Mathers has all but crumbled into the sea from its precious cliff top site, guarded by battlements...”.

From Portrait of a Parish, by Duncan Fraser (published 1970) we learn of the castle’s grisly history. It was built in the early 15th century by James Barclay, a courtier, who together with other local lairds detested the local sheriff. They complained of his actions so often to King James 1 of Scotland, that in a rather “unkingly” way, the king told them to go and make soup of the sheriff and “sup him”. Taking this literally, the local lairds, led by Barclay, tricked the sheriff into a day’s hunting and tipped him into a boiling cauldron, and one by one “had a sup of broth”. Refusing to admit that it was his idea, the king denounced them and swore an oath that Barclay, “would get no peace to live neither on land nor sea for the rest of his life”. The cannibal laird spent the rest of his life at Kaim of Mathers “poised between the land and the sea on a cliff top near St Cyrus”.
