1 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

President’s Report

I would say that as a whole - the club had a successful year. Well done to all involved and thanks to you all for being great Sharkies and wearing the Blue, Black and White with pride.

Here is a wrap up of our 2019/2020 season

Coaches

Pat Northam stepped into our Club Coach role last season and in the end he had to fill more shoes than planned. Pat ended up running the Academy(with the help of other committee members) after Andrew stepped down. He also took on coaching roles for 2 academy teams in the club that could possibly have not gone ahead if it wasn’t for Pat’s assistance, along with Captain/Coaching his own team and somehow also finding time for National League games and training. He’s had a tough year and I do trust that things will be better this year as we will have more coaches coming through the club. Great job Pat and we are lucky that you are wanting to continue in the role for next season.

To all our club coaches - what a great job you have done with our teams we have had some great success at metro and at AYC. We all missed the opportunity to shine at State Champs with our sad, disappointing and sudden end to our season. Thanks to the players who committed to coaching teams and managed to work around your training schedules, along with sharing your knowledge

To Mel & Vedran - thanks again for your commitment to our club and passing on your great wisdom of the game to develop our players into what will be champion teams again someday. Good luck in the years ahead.

Managers

Thanks to all the Managers that assisted with teams getting them prepared for the season and helping coaches with the tit-bits involved with sport. Usually a thankless task ...so THANK YOU all.

Age Managers - the concept of Age Managers was introduced this season. While it didn’t take off, it is still important that we get this happening to ease the burden on many committee members duplicating roles within the club. To all parents out there, please show more hands - as many hands make light work.

Volunteers

To the people that do put up there hands ….coming early to AWL and home club games or staying after to pack up, doing table duty for others, BBQ’s at the bay (the cooking, the shopping) ….the list does go on and some of you are happy to just do it without being asked or named. You all know who you are - thanks for making our volunteer jobs/roles so much easier.

2 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

Teams

Getting the pool back, along with the great use of Gunnamatta - saw many teams getting in extra training sessions. Well done to all teams.

Congratulations to our WPNSW Metro winners: M16B Undefeated Minor Premiers M4 Premiers L5 Premiers

To all the other teams that made finals - we all know you would have joined the list above. Congrats to all teams that made it to the top 4.

AYC Teams

I was extremely proud to be poolside to see two of our teams make the finals at the Australian Youth Championships. We had our new young gun girls - L14a & our in form L18 team, both finish 3rd in the Championships.

Congrats to both teams on their great wins: L14a Blue Bronze Medal L18 Blue Bronze Medal

ACU

We have had a great year with our continued partnership with Australian Catholic University. Along with financial support, Support of our elite athletes, opportunities to train in Rome for an EAPP student, along with a Zoom conference for our Yr 11/12 students offering advice for furthering education. ACU are a great support to our club and have strengthened their team to assist us even more. We are extremely grateful for their support to Cronulla Water Polo.

Cronulla RSL

As we continue our partnership with Cronulla RSL - we need to have a membership drive to make sure all members are linked to the RSL/Cronulla Water Polo. Dollars spent drives more dollars to our club and will also pave the way for a stronger partnership in the future. Thanks to Cronulla RSL for their continued support and we look forward to having a “function” (if that's a word anymore) at the club.

Initiatives

Gunnamatta Clubhouse has undergone more improvements thanks again to the Cronulla Gang of Youths who are committed to providing us with a clean, comfortable & safe place for our members. Watch this space as the team are working hard with council, for more improvements.

3 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

Orana Women's Health provided some financial support to families going through tough times. Thanks to Berni Hoy (Chipsa & Mack’s mum) for connecting the club to Orana. Registration fees were paid for 9 families. We will reach out to Orana again this season to try to assist any families going through hardship.

WPA

AIS Refresh and Sport Australia ran an interview process to all clubs about our sport. AIS funding was held back and pressure was placed on our National Teams for podium finishes. Sport Australia continued their support of Grassroots funding - which has been great to see (WPA) moving to make the sport more structured, a better environment & transparent with financials and within the pathway process. A new CEO on board has kicked off to a quick start, while there are still a lot to be fixed or improved. Moving forward I see a positive journey now for the sport of Water Polo.

Thanks to the club members for completing surveys and to the members that gave up their time to join into the conference call.

WPNSW

As WPA have improved their model, WPNSW are now able to define their pathways and plan a calendar for the seasons ahead. New staff have come into WPNSW and have been doing a great job to make our sport more inclusive and enjoyable.

Wrap up

I received a Cook Community Award this year presented by Scott Morrison. I was extremely proud and thankful to be nominated. To see so many other volunteers doing exactly what I do, shows that there are so many good people out there in our community and it strengthened me in my role as President. Thanks to the club, especially Jenny and Nic, for supporting me with this award.

After reluctantly stepping in as President, starting off with no pool and ending then with a pandemic. I have actually enjoyed the role and I wish to thank all of the Committee and many club members for their support of me in this position.

I also have many friends outside of the club who have supported me and I have thanked them personally for their involvement. A big thanks to my hubby Ake, for supporting and encouraging me as the President (I think he enjoyed being the First Man).

We have followed on from a tough season financially after the previous year pool problems, Next season will also be a hard one following the COVID-19 pandemic, as we have missed the Winter Comp and many fundraisers to keep the club in good health. Thanks to Rod for keeping a watchful eye on all matters and assisting me along the way as my right hand man.

4 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

The committee rallied this season and did a great job bringing the club together. We had a good team of fresh faces this season and I wish to thank the entire committee for their commitment to Cronulla Water Polo Club.

A reminder, that we are all volunteers trying our best. I am proud to be a part of this club and I hope that every club member feels the same as I do.

As I mentioned in last year’s report - I have a strong belief in our club that we should aim high & to strive to become the most successful club in Australia again. I also continue to have a strong sense of community spirit & love to see the whole club working together to enjoy the game & to be proud Sharkies.

Adios … it has been fun while it lasted (well sort of).

FINS UP Sharkies Good luck in 2020/21

5 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

The financial statements of Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club Inc., which accompany this report, have been audited by Tom Iceton OAM, Chartered Accountant, who has been appointed by the club as the Auditor.

The 2019 / 20 financial year has been a stronger year overall for the financial position of the club. Similar to the 18/19 year fundraising revenue has been considerably lower than normal levels, primarily due to the COVID 19 pandemic restrictions placed on social gatherings and events. Our season was concluded abruptly in March 2020, which meant that Academy and Grade Metro seasons finished without playing finals, and the AWL season finished a few rounds short of the final series. The AWL short season resulted in a refund from WP Australia of approx. $14K, which effectively helped with the clubs overall financial position for the year.

The final overall result for the financial year was a small profit of $22,362, compared to a loss last year of $8,883. As at April 30th 2020, (the financial year end) the club had a positive cash position of $60,720, which compares well to last years position of $45,070. Noting that $25K of this is held in reserve in the infrastructure Fund account.

At April 30, the accounts receivable position was $25,325, compared to $20,265 last financial year. Total liabilities at end financial year 2020 were $30,165, compared to $31,851 last financial year.

Some key points to note from the accounts when comparing the FY 19/ 20 year to the previous financial year:

1) We had the use of the Sutherland utility pool for the full season, whereas the prior year we had significant costs for external pool hire, this gave a reduced cost for pool hire over prior year of approx. $14K.

2) With the COVID19 situation the entire winter metro season was not conducted, this usually results in good profit for the club from registration fees versus costs, this is estimated at around $10K of net profit foregone from this ($18.5K of lost revenue in registrations, less anticipated costs)

3) The support of the Australian Catholic University (ACU) was very well received as this provides vital income to allow fees to remain lower for players. During the FY 19/ 20 year $18,182 was received.

4) Overall large fundraising events did not occur this year due to COVID 19, in particular the Sportmans Lunch, Presentation Night and Trivia night did not occur. These usually generate a few thousand dollars of fundraising each. (note – the amounts in the accounts for Sportmans lunch are for the event at the end of the previous season, approx. $6K profit)

6 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

5) There was good efforts for “at game” fundraising with the BBQ’s at Gunna and also general AWL fundraising events, these overall were a few thousand more than the previous year.

6) The AWL season was much less of a negative on overall club finances, compared to previous seasons. This was due to good sponsorship activity for the teams, plus a generous individuals donation, combined with the $14K refund from AWP as the season was cut short. Overall the AWL was roughly $25K better than prior year.

I also would like to thank Megan Hale who works as our club bookkeeper, and her efforts and knowledge in keeping our accounts upto date are very well noted.

Australian Water Polo League Report

AWL Men / M1

Coach: Vedran Cirkovic Manager: Rhys Barclay

AWL MVP: Ugljesa Mihailovic M1 MVP: Connor Barclay

There were a few changes to the National League squad from the 19/20 season with Kal Glanznig playing for Uni and the loss of Jack Cockington, Liam Watson and Keellan Milinavic from the squad. We had the addition of Tom Freeman and Jesse Taylor moving up from the and some younger players Jack Winchester and Tristan Glanzig from M18 team step up im M1 and Australian Waterpolo League games.

NSW WP competition format for the M1 competition 2019 season was more suitable for us than the Premier League in 2018. As every year, the 2019 M1 competition was good preparation for 2020 Australian Waterpolo League. Club day format allowed us to check some M2 players in M1 competition which resulted in having even more young players in 2020 National League. With only one win in Round 1 against Sydney University we didn’t manage to finish top three and play in the M1 final series.

We started the 2020 Australian Waterpolo League season with a road trip to Brisbane where we played the Qld Thunder which were a team made up from the Barracudas and KFC to Make one Qld (Thunder) team for the National league. We were looking strong in a tight physical match but with Ben Mathews taken to hospital with a broken finger and our Japanese import Kohei Inaba out in the blood bin with a split eye, Qld Thunder took the upper hand. Cronulla’s bench was thin and we lost the first game however Cronulla dug deep in round 2 to take home their first win of the Season 13-11.

We had the arrival of our second import Yuto Abao from Japan arrive in time for round 2 and had our youngest players Tristan Glanzig and Jack Winchester making their debut, We won our next two Home games against Adelaide jets 12-10 and 9-6.

Round 3 we were defeated by Sydney Uni in some real tight games which we scored goal for goal with the opposition but unfortunately we were not able to take the win.

Our second road trip saw the team head to Perth to play Fremantle and UWA. We were beaten by a more experienced Freemantle 18-17 and 19-11 . The team lost Connor Barclay who came down sick and had to sit out the next two games against UWA. With a thin bench low in numbers were defeated 10-12 and 11-13 after taking the lead at half time.

We moved down the ladder in our next two rounds where we lost both games against last year’s premiers Wests Magpies 15-7 and 19-13 also last year finalist Drummoyne 19-9 and 16-8. This years season saw us play some training games against New Zealand’s, Hutt Water

Polo Club at Gunnamatta baths where the team was looking strong for their next road trip up to Newcastle to take on Hunter. Then Balmain in the following round. A win against Hunter would have seen Cronulla swap positions on the table and hopefully see Cronulla make the top 8. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 and restrictions put on sport OVO National League season was cut short. Overall it was a great season. One of the significant milestones with Uga leading the point score up until the last round with 40 goals for the season. It will be great to see Cronulla develop over the next few seasons as the younger players gain more experience in the National League. Thanks to the committee for their support and to the player and club sponsors.

Thanks for a great 2019/20 season. Vedran Cirkovic.

AWL Ladies / L1

Coach: Mel Rippon Assistant Coach: Matt Hankin Managers: Ben Detar (AWL), Cas Colquhoun & Julie Vinson (L1)

AWL MVP: Maddy Steere L1 MVP: Claudia Abad

The L1 season had many positives, including the opportunity for the previous seasons fringe AWL players to step into the playing roster and make an impact. It also allowed opportunities for those who were uncertain about their AWL decision, to play and prepare for AWL without having to commit to the entire season at that moment in time.

Due to the uncertainty of whether a competition was going ahead and if so, what the format would be, many players were unavailable for the last minute scheduling, which again, created opportunities for our younger development girls and the likes of Tenisha Cook, Molly Colquhoun, Olivia Fraser and Sophie Hankin. Some instances saw these girls backing up to play 3 games in a row and did a great job.

While we missed the finals by a single point, we challenged every team until the final whistle and showed that with superior fitness, we would be a force to be reckoned with in both AWL and the 18s team competing at AYWPC. An unexpected visit from Harvard University kept us fit and in competition mode contributing to a strong foundation for us to work off for the beginning of National League in late Jan.

National league season 2019-20 was one to remember, to say the least. With all Olympic hopefuls retreating back to their respective clubs, Cronulla was lucky enough to embrace the return of Lena Mihailovic and Ash Colaco and introduce a couple new additions in Maddy Steere, Molly Quinn and Claudia Abud.

10 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

After 10 different draw changes, we started off our AWL campaign for 2019/20 with a road trip up to Brisbane facing reigning champs, Brisbane Thunder. Despite our two Stingers coming off the back of a training camp including a 3 game test series against the US, they displayed text book Water polo as we dominated the first 3 quarters and went into our final quarter of the first game up by 5. Potentially feeling a little too confident and in true Sharks Women’s water polo fashion, we ended the game in a draw and took our first game to penalty shoot out where we conceded our first close loss.

This seemed to remain a bit of a trend for the season, taking a number of games to penalty shootouts and finishing with tight margins. One particularly close game was on our second road trip to Perth against where we significantly bettered a previous performance but still finished in a devastating penalty loss. Although a couple of stand out performances from Bianca Smith and Jade Vinson saw us leave Perth with 7 well earned points.

A couple of convincing wins against Adelaide and UWA put us, along with Drummoyne and Marlins in contention to make top 6. The unfortunate end to our season came in round NUMBER just before an important game against Drummoyne. We finished the season with a win and signed off as COVID shut down the competition. Almost immediately after, Mel and Maddy were sent home, Claudia escaped up north for VISA purposes and everyone locked themselves inside.

A couple of stand outs this year would have to be Maddy Steere settling nicely to the Cronulla family as well as Britt Tait’s continued effort to make it to every game and most trainings despite living just over 2 hours away.

Battling obstacles as small as concussions to major events such as a global pandemic, we consider ourselves one of the lucky teams to have travelled around Australia this season and more importantly for everyone to come out healthy.

Thanks for the season. Mel Rippon & Michaela Davies.

Summer Metropolitan Grade Report

Well, what a crazy season it has been. From start until the all so abrupt finish, no one could have predicted how this would end up.

We were fortunate this year to be able to return to our home pools of Sutherland Leisure Centre and Gunnamatta Baths, a welcome relief for players, coaches and families who were all so used to attending home games at Auburn and Ryde.

This season we submitted teams in the majority of the grades, with Men participating in grades 1 to 6 and the Ladies participating in grades 1 to 5.

In a similar vain to last year, our Division 1 teams (1st, 2nd, 3rd Grade) across both Men and Ladies struggled with consistency and numbers, compounded by the parallel running of the AWL season in the second half of the season. Despite this, the teams all showed a massive level of heart and never gave up in some tough circumstances. In 2020/21, we plan to fully eradicate these issues by implementing a dedicated squad for each grade and minimise the up and down movement of players between teams.

Our Division 2 teams once again proved to be a solid rock for the club and embodied our club spirit with pride. Congratulations goes to our M4 and L5 teams who were declared Premiers (once the COVID-19 situation cancelled the pending finals series).

Our dominance in the M4 competition has been running for the past 2 decades and it is great to see that despite the retirement of some old heads we continue to win this competition with some returning players.

The L5 competition on the other hand has shown that the young up-and-comers really can perform against the more senior ladies from other clubs. The team showed absolute dominance this year with their superior fitness and goal scoring finesse. It was great to watch.

I am encouraging all players this year to return to Grade next season, with the hope that we see a return to the pool by some so called ‘retired’ players as well as more and more youngsters who are keen to have a crack.

Next season will see a massive shift in focus towards club culture, squad based development and building pathways all the way from Juniors through the Grades and up towards National League.

Individual team reports to follow below. Cheers & Fins Up.

Mathew Schweighoffer Vice President – Metropolitan Seniors (Grade)

12 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC.

M2

Coach: Vedran Cirkovic Manager: Mat Schweighoffer

MVP: Patrick Falson

The season began in the finest way possible - An emphatic 8-6 victory over Sydney University at the Lion’s Den. It was a positive sign that 2019/20 was the year of the Shark.

This year M2 saw an unfamiliar return to familiarity with the return of the old firm - Chris Batty, Patch Falson & Nic Watkins, supported by the everpresent Pat Northam, Mat Schweighoffer & Tom Freeman making up the senior half of the team. This was of course significantly improved with a backing of middle-aged talent in Sam Rose, Danny Kerr, Hayden Molla, Danny Colaco, Nick Crowe, Jordan Duncan and Jimmy Dickson, and a fresh injection of young guns Alex Brischetto and Jack Winchester.

After the joy of Round 1 wore off, the results for the boys in the pool could only be described as volatile, with a combination of disappointing losses and painful draws in some very ‘winnable’ games. Unfortunately, our Gunnamatta games were also limited this year due to bushfire smoke hazards and some unlucky weather. But nevertheless, the team pushed ahead despite these challenges.

We did manage to snag a couple of sensational victories over Drummoyne (both Home & Away) which really motivated the squad during the back end of the season. There are certainly a lot of positive signs in the mix which I do hope pass on into next year across all grades.

Thank you to all this year who played, supported, backed-up, coached, managed, ran the clock, sideline reports, commentary, pool setup and BBQs. It is all very much appreciated and we are looking forward to having you back next year, with bigger and better things to come.

Mat Schweighoffer.

M3

Coach: None Managers: Luke Brbot & Paddy Seymour

MVP: Luke Brbot

The 2019/2020 M3 Summer Season was always going to be an uphill battle for the ACU Cronulla Sharks. Following the retirement of several players post World Championship win in the Chapel Hill North Carolina Invitational, M3 relied heavily on the assistance of the

13 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC. younger up and coming Sharks to assist the fulcrum of Luke Brbot, Dylan Turner & Matt May.

Throughout the season M3 had a total of 29 different players listed on the card at some stage during the season, clearly illustrating difficulties with combinations and continuity. The core group of the Spencer brothers, Jack Geldart, Patrick Seymour along with the highly anticipated return of “The Hyphen” - Southpaw Kieran Brunner-Evans - showed great and exciting signs early in the season with a couple of strong wins.

However, that could not be sustained as the season progressed, with the side simply running out of troops due to promotions and other events (most notably music festivals), which resulted with the team finishing at the bottom of the ladder. Without the assistance of some of the second graders including Tom Freeman, Mat Schweighoffer and the evergreen Nic Watkins, the season would have been much more difficult than it already was.

The positives to take out of the season however were aplenty. The more regular return to Gunnamatta Bay for several games was a joy for players and spectators alike. As improvements continue to be made overtime we look forward to eventually restoring the Bay to its theatre of dreams of yesteryear. The blooding of several juniors throughout the season gave great exposure to the Men’s grade style of game which will serve them well in the future as they progress through the ages and grades. Of particular mention, congratulations must be forwarded to Charlie Melas, Aeden Bonar, the Brischetto brothers, the Churchyard brothers, Nick Crowe, Keenan Ewings, Tristan Glaznig, Morgan Lekovic, Rory McKell, Patrick Moro, Nick Perfrement, Will Turnbull and Jack Winchester (Pooh), all of whom played well beyond their years and contributed greatly to the season. In addition to this, Hayden Molla sensationally broke the modern M3 record for most number of goals scored in a single game, bagging 9 goals versus Wests, where he was simply unstoppable. With this effort he bested the 8 goal haul held by Miles “Liam Watson” Price in the late noughties.

Finally, M3 would like to thank those family and friends who have assisted throughout the year. Without a designated coach and manager along with table officials, coordinating on game day would not have been easy without all their support. With many exciting changes and the club happening, it is onward and upward for M3 next season and the club in general.

Fins Up. Luke Brbot.

Congratulations to all the boys on our earnt the 2019-20 SYDNEY METRO SUMMER Minor Premiers. Thank you to COVID-19 who gave us the win to this 2019/2020 season!

Personally, I would like to thank all the boys for a fun, exciting and successful season. Every game I always got comments from the ref's and opposition on their effort, cohesive play and shocking remarks about the 'Hail Mary' goals that were going in the net.

I like to thank Scott, Ned, Blair, Harry and Max for staying strong in the M4's. Without your energy and experience the team would be lacking the Men's Grade experience. I'd also like to thank Kyle, Tom, Ben, Jett and Brock who have returned playing for Cronulla bringing their past experience and flair. The M4's hasn't looked like this in many years, boys were between 18 and 31. It is exciting for the club to have such a strength in Division 2 and this year we have proved that again. Thank you all! Bring on 2020/2021! FINS UP

Very diverse bunch of players came together this very strange 2019-20 season. Not great value for our team playing just 8 games - due to byes, forfeits against us, missing rounds etc. The team combined very well as the season progressed. No losses after our first couple of games had us placed second going into finals. But for the COVID cancellation we had well balanced, winning team.

Our finishing off needs to improve, as we had a very low “goals scored” at the end of the comp. Fact: a player from an opposing team scored as many goals as our whole team for the season. We were fortunate to have a very experienced goalkeeper, playing some great

15 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC. games through the season and recorded the least “goals against” for our team. Karl was also a great leader in the water.

Thanks to Smithy, Kaz & Schway with their efforts bringing the 2nd division teams together.

Congrats to our “Mighty M4’s for their minor premiership and Gold Medal recipients.

The team was combined of some “experienced” players along with a group of the new wave of kids coming through the club. While the team finished at the lower end of the ladder, it is great to see the young boys having a go & toughing it out against the big lads.

Another erratic season, with the team being scheduled away from our M4/M5 teams at times, makes it hard to have a club atmosphere. Thanks to the parents who came along to help with table duty.

A big thanks again to Bob Smith for his positive influence with the boys in the water & for arranging the team week to week ensuring that we didn’t forfeit & could give the committed players a game.

Week-nights are hard – but it’s important to play more games and to be involved with players of all levels to improve your knowledge of the game.

Thanks to the team for committing this year – we hope to see you back up again next season.

Thanks, Kaz Kerr.

This season started with a lot of disruption with a few girls completing the HSC and most of the games leading up to Christmas were close for 3 quarters, then we just couldn't go on with it. With a lot of support from L3 and junior players we struggled to find combinations and consistency and were just happy to have players on the bench. Thanks to all those girls who backed up from L3, with all the juggling of games per player it was very much appreciated. Once we got past Christmas we started to get into better positions in games and took on some tougher "heavily stacked" teams and got some good wins. Apart from one game towards the end of the season, I can't fault the girls commitment and effort. Each week we had a different team due to all sorts of reasons but the Division 1 training group meant we were able to develop as a group and individually we had players who continued to improve through the season.

We have a lot of young players in the team who are strengthening our L1 teams prospects and behind them a strong group of L3 and juniors which sets up our future in Division 1 teams well into the future. A lot of the girls who played L2 also earned their spots in the National league squad and went on to play national league with a couple of debutantes this season as well, congratulations and well done to those girls. I am looking forward to seeing you again next season and helping our Division 1 teams go further in the 20/21 season in whatever form it ends up.

Over the 11 games, L3 finished with 3 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses; 6 of which were by a single goal. The girls came together over the short season and combined youthful eagerness with experience. It was great to see our new mums, Jenna and Jana, back in the water mixing it with the younger members of the team.

The teams detailed results were Drummoyne (1st ) 5-6 and 10-8, Sydney Uni (2nd ) 7-8 and cancelled game, UNSW (3rd ) 13-11, 9-11 and cancelled game, UTS Balmain Gold (4th ) 7-8 and 5-5, SNB (5th ) 15-16 and 6-7, Cronulla (6th ), UTS Balmain Black (7th ) 10-5 and 0-5F.

In all disappointing to record so many ‘near wins’ this season and not be able to complete the 2019-20 competition.

Another great season for our GK Trina Johnson – who is proving that age has no barriers. Although, to be the only team member to be fouled out of a game indicates that she needs to stay in the cage. All team members contributed but we had some untimely losses that could have been avoided - which placed us out of finals contention. It was great to see the improvement and confidence building in the young guns – Ruby, Trista and Kimberley. Ruby takes away the team MVP with some strong games and dominant centre forward & counter attack goals.

Thanks to Jeff Gibson and Anthony Keogh for ALWAYS doing table duty for us (lucky we had 2 x Learner drivers in the team) and to Allana Waller from L5’s who was always happy to wait after her game and learn the ropes of the “WhistleBlower”.

Congrats to our L5 girls who finished the season as minor premiers and to our young gun super sub- Layla Barclay on her selection in the U16 Australian squad. There will be movement through the teams again next year as we see the young girls progressing through the grades. I look forward to watching you all develop in the years to come and look forward to the next wave of juniors passing through the lower grades.

Cheers. Kaz Kerr.

The L5 team was made up of a mix of players from U16 and up. A good combination of speed in the counter attack aspect and strength in the centre forwards saw the girls easily win most of their games – with only one close loss against Sydney Dolphins.

It was a fun and light spirited team, and hopefully they all gained some match experience if nothing else!

Season 2019/2020 was challenging as majority of the players had school commitments and therefore they haven't attended a significant number of training sessions. Not attending all the training sessions affect their technical and tactical abilities but considering that, they had pretty good results.

Performance on the National competition was solid as it was also during Metro competition. Highlight of this season is definitely few younger players that have improved their abilities and will be a valuable asset to under 18’s A team in the upcoming season. Also we had few players playing up in the National League which resulted in having numbers down for certain games but the rest of the team managed to overcome that obstacle and wrap up the Metro competition with two important wins against Sydney Uni and current Nationals champion, Balmain. That is proving that this generation have more than a few players who can be a valuable assets in the senior competition. Some of them have already played National League and some of them are definitely going to be National League players material.

I would also use this opportunity to say huge thank you to my teams manager Matthew Perfrement, the committee, and all the sponsors who helped the club.

After a rough start to the season with two losses, the boys quickly developed as a playing group and started a massive winning streak charging up the ladder. Every game the team played with humility and heart. I received several compliments throughout the season of how the team carried themselves during big wins and small losses. As everyone improved things started looking promising leading into the last game before the finals. Unfortunately, with a loss by one goal, the minor premiership slipped through our fingers. The team should be extremely proud of the season and the effort they put in for each game. Congratulations.

The season started with promise for the boys, as the original 14As from 2017 had come back together with 2 new additional team members. We felt it was our time this year and the boys were pumped to stop being the silver medalists from 14's and finally take Gold in all tournaments. Unfortunately, that glimmer of promise slowly faded as the season wore on, and the boys did not get to make the podium. Despite the disappointing 10th place Nationals and Metro 4th place finishes, throughout the season the boys bonded as a team, and the winner was the friendships they formed together. They encouraged and supported each other ,determined to do their best as a team against all odds. Special congratulations goes to Marcus Brischetto, Max Churchyard, Rory McKell and Ben Pritchard for making the U16 Boys Australian Squad. A phenomenal achievement!! Congratulations also to Koliya Van Althuis and Alex McFadden for making the NSW CHS U15 boys team. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 all boys lost their dream to compete further in the Aus Squad and CHS team, and we can only hope things return to normal by next year and all boys and their teammates have another opportunity for representative honours.

This was a disappointing end to our season, as the finals would have given the boys the opportunity to show everyone how good they really were and would have been a great reward for all the hard work they put in throughout the season. A big thank you to all the players for their commitment and dedication. All players showed great improvement throughout the year while some kept us entertained in and out of the water more than others. To the parents, you were a wonderful group who really rallied together to help fund raise an incredible amount of money for the boys, which hopefully will go towards another tour for these players to enjoy. For my part we have had a great season. Whilst many of the team were relative newcomers and we need to accept that, we all learned plenty this season to send us on our way to be better players and a team.

All of the 14s trained as one large squad so we would like to thank Al Ewing and his team for their assistance in our learnings through training. I would like to thank the families of the team for their wonderful support of the players and the positive outlook I encountered throughout the season.

Our greatest achievement had to be our very successful campaign at national championships in Brisbane where the boys lifted enormously and produced better play than at any time earlier in the season. Some marvellous results there. Every one of these players has a future in the game should they decide to continue in Water Polo and for my part it has been a pleasure to become mates with all of you.

2019/2020 was a very rewarding season for our team of young sportsmen. They were supported by our exceptional group of parents and siblings who attended to our administrative duties including table and set up with an admirable blend of enthusiasm, good humour and professionalism.

With a three-year age range from youngsters, Jordan, Hugo and Lachie to mature heads like Lawson, Macauley and Nicholas we did well to meld a very cohesive team where everyone contributed, everyone improved and most importantly everyone enjoyed the season. Individually some great performances; Zayne for his great swim-offs, Bailey for his fantastic goalkeeping, Nicholas for his awesome anticipation, Jameson his strong defence, Lachie for his great shot, Hugo for his covering, Jordan for his left-hand shot, Matt for his deadly accurate outside shot, Christian for his strength in the centre, Cameron’s all round determination, Macauley his maturity and leadership, and lastly Lawson our standout all rounder. Special mention to Jameson and Zane who, drafted to the U14A’s for Nationals really stood up in the higher-level competition.

Finished Equal 2nd on Points, 3rd on countback; We were extremely disappointed that the final series was cancelled as we had improved so much through the season that we fancied ourselves a good chance.

We didn't start the season the best but the girls really came together in Brisbane and it's the best we've seen them play. Our goal going into Brisbane was to make the top 8.

Things we've been working on for a while all came together and they played really well as a team with everyone knowing their job and all supporting each other.

Brisbane was the majority of the girls last year in the Metro competition and they really gave their all. We made top 8 and from then on everything was a bonus and with no pressure on themselves they really lifted and played some great and memorable games. We had a time out with 6.5 seconds to go against Mermaids and we had a planned move which ended up going to Plan B and Liv scored a cracker on the bell and that got the girls into the Semi's. It was so exciting and one of those games you will always remember. We then ended up playing for Bronze against UNSW who we hadn't beaten all year and they came together to win and really deserved the Bronze.

It was a long week and it was so good to see the girls gain confidence in themselves along the way and to come away with the Bronze was really a reward for all their hard work and dedication over the years.

Everyone played their part in Brisbane but a special mention to Sabine our Goalie. She had the best tournament and was saving 5 metres, one on ones and shots that should have gone in she was getting too and that really inspired the girls. She kept playing injured and that says a lot about Sabine and the team they were really determined, focused and in the zone and it was so good to see them all play like we know they can play.

It was a shame that State didn't happen as we had beaten Drummoyne, Balmain and UNSW after Brisbane and I know we would have done really well at State.

This group of girls have all been together for a long time and we've all had ups and downs along the way but they really have come together to be a really well rounded and great team and also great friends.

We love them, We are proud of them and we hope you had fun.

Also thank you to Beth and Pinky who helped with the girls along the way, we really appreciate your time and effort.

We entered this team in the 18A’s so that we could provide an opportunity for the girls to keep playing. We knew it would be a tough season and with only 9 players it became frustrating wondering if we were going to get a team together each week as a lot of the girls had other commitments some Sundays and also during the week when we had training.

But to the girls credit and thankfully to our 2 super subs Layla & Kiah, who backed up from the U/16’s most weekends, we did not forfeit a game throughout the season which I am very proud off. While in some games we struggled against some of the stronger teams to the girls credit they kept trying and giving 100%. We ended up having 2 draws and playing some close games against some very strong teams.

I would like to thank all the girls who played the entire season and putting up with my frustration. You are a great bunch of girls and I wish you all the best for the future. A special mention must go to Jeff Gibson who regularly manned the clock for us and also to Ian Bridges for managing the team.

Although the season didn’t come with too many wins, the growth from our first game to our last has been amazing. We went from being beaten by 10 goals to then missing out on the win by 1 or 2 goals. The girls defence played a massive part as it was rock solid by the end of the season, and their attack was what cost them the game as the girls didn’t shoot as much as they should have. A killer for the season was that not everyone was doing swimming

What a great season for the U16B’s! We initially had 7 players and with a few extra recruits even up until game day RD1, we were able to enter a team. With the regular season cut short our girls were in 2nd position prior to week 1 of Finals. Over the season there was a noticeable improvement in our players as individuals and the way that they played as a team. All the girls show a lot of skill and promise in the pool, it will be interesting to see how these young players develop over the course of their Water Polo careers.

The future of the Club is secured for success…. with these young Sharkies who embed a positive culture towards hard work and teamwork. A team of girls who put their team mates first. They are the nicest girls – full of laughter and friendships… an absolute joy to be around. In the pool, those smiles turn to grit and determination. These girls know how to win!

The support crew were amazing… especially the cheer squad and Kate the Manager, just brilliant! Bronze was the colour from the Australian Club Championships in Brisbane. It was a hard tournament with many very close games. The girls should be very proud of their efforts both in and out of the pool. They all behaved like champions. The girls were also fired up for the Metro Comp finals to win and for the State Club Championship. These two events would have seen the girls come home with more hardware if it wasn’t for the COVID- 19 pandemic. Overall, the memories of our jokes before each game and at quarter times; our weekly zoom sessions with everyone taking it in turns to teach the team something; our hard training sessions; weekly theory sessions; Bec Rippon’s coaching session; the amazing race at Westfields; the Halloween fun night; pizza nights; and of course our bronze medal match.. made for a great season. Moving up to the A division from a Gold Medal in the winter competition B division was a formidable challenge this season with our best two players drafted into the L14a Blue team, leaving us with 11 players.

The competition began with a familiar start and a 15-2 win, sending our confidence high for another great season. From then we encountered stronger opponents who were fitter and more experienced in a style of water polo we had only just begun to play. To the team’s credit we trained hard, with limited pool space, and were never embarrassed with the results from tougher games. We scored at least one goal in every match and were happy to shake hands with worthy opponents.

Midway through the season we lost a goalkeeper to knee surgery and a little later our centre forward to a shoulder injury. This was enough to stifle our late charge to the finals.

With only the L14a Blue team selected to play at Nationals and the Covid-19 pandemic cutting our season short, everyone was disappointed on missing the opportunity to play in a

We had a great season. The team had a range of experience levels which is normal in 14s. The girls improved over the season, scoring more goals than they conceded.

We did not have a dedicated goalie. Thanks to all of those girls who volunteered to be goalie. In the 2nd half of the season Jasmin and Harper played half a game each in goals and both girls improved greatly.

We achieved my goal for the team for the season which was to make the semi finals. Unfortunately the season was cut short due to Corona but I’m sure we were going to win our semi and the grand final. All but 3 of the girls had not played metro before so their exposure to water polo was limited. The team did exceptionally well scoring many great team goals and all girls relied on one another. Many of our games were very very good. My highlights were the Drummoyne game 2nd round where we had been beaten easily in the first round and almost beat them in the 2nd round. We almost beat Breakers in our first game at Gunnamatta. We also had a great game against Balmain where we scored many brilliant goals.

2020 Season Competition Round up

232 Members signed up to Gunnamatta Water Polo for the 2020 Season. A strong pre season in Spring saw us launch into Summer, fit and ready for the Saturday competition and Junior tournaments.

The Gunnamatta Committee of Trina Johnson, Michael Wirth and Jim Winchester really wanted to focus the year towards Water Polo skills acquisition. We want every child to think of Water Polo as a game they can play all their lives, at any level, making new friends where ever they are in the world.

Gunnamatta teams across all age groups were in medal contention, but unfortunately the season was cancelled without being able to run grand finals due to COVID-19. We were by far the strongest club in the SSWPA competition.

Congratulations to all children, coaches and managers for a stellar season. From Spring right through to March, the dedication of children and their parents to participate and learn was outstanding.

February 2020: Orange NSW State Cup

What a weekend! 3 teams of 25 players and their parents all descended on the beautiful town of Orange to participate in the NSW Water Polo U12 Festival. I was pleased to report that not only did the club win Gold in the water - I reckon we won Gold out of the water, the way we came together as a club - focusing on the kids enjoyment, development and bonding as a group of parents and now - new friends. Coaches: a brilliant group whose 100% focus was on participation, learning and fun. Sergio Casetta, Shannon Kell and Michael Wirth - are brilliant men to have guiding our young members. I was so proud of their focus ensuring each child got the same game time - no matter the game situation and using game situations to develop the players abilities. Each team’s performance was better than expected due to these coaches. Managers: The coaches couldn’t do what they did without the assistance in coaching and managing of Matt, Waino and Richard McKell (manager of managers!) who were supportive of the kids and ensured everyone was capped and warmed up, ready to go. Katherine Peacock - thank you for picking up the actions I dropped and as the best Minister of Fun and building bridges with other clubs. KP organised fantastic locations for us to eat and play together out of the pool. Coordinating 70 people for dinner is no small feat! That’s not all she did - but I don’t have enough space! Mark ‘Waino’ Wainman- the ‘inside Pool’ logistics and stats master! Waino spent countless hours getting the admin and paper work done before the tournament and communicating to all involved what was required. When we got to Orange he didn’t slow down - coordinating teams to ensure they were at the right place at the right time!

Natalie Wainman - our Social Media and Photographer. Kept everyone informed and updated back home. Our Parents: what a fantastic and supportive group of people - not only for their kids but every kid in the club. It was lovely to watch and the bonding on the side of the pool was special - which continued into the evening! Thank you for your efforts in getting your child to the pool and the tournament. It is quite the juggling act! Our parents’ behaviour on the side of the pool was exemplary and should be modelled by other clubs. Our players: Bull Sharks: U10boys playing against U12 teams! These boys faced massive and fast opposition and gave their all in every one of their games. Watch out for this team in the future - these boys represented our Gunna club proudly and didn’t take a step back when the games were hard. I guarantee you will enjoy watching this group of kids evolve over the coming years. Shannon has done a brilliant job over the last two tournaments with these boys. Tiger Sharks: The Tigers were our development team. It was special to watch Sergio and the team grow during the tournament - the game play and skills developed by this team happened before our eyes. I hope this team can stay together for next year - they won’t go home without some trophy wear! Great White Sharks: Gold Medallists! This team didn’t win Gold because we had superstars and standout individuals. Whilst we have many excellent and future representatives in all our teams, this team won because they played for each other. Every game this team worked together as a group to defend and each goal was a team effort. Selfless play all weekend. These kids were eager to learn - and what a Water Polo teacher in Michael Wirth. Well done. Your spirit of play ensured you went home with a medal around your neck! We are keen to see how you all move through your personal Water Polo journey. Everyone back at Home: Thank you Trina Johnson for help in getting us to the tournament with our sanity in check! Also thanks to our coaches and managers who stayed home and had to scramble to make up the 25 player shortfall on Saturday comp! That is not easy. A special call out to Nsw WP officials @pooky and tournament organisers. We absolutely loved the event and we will be back even bigger next year!

Balmain U12 Tournament January:

We had two Gunna teams competing in the Balmain 12 and under tournament at Ryde Aquatic. The boys’ team - Tiger Sharks - initially beginning in the Pandoras division after three decisive wins were elevated to the Titans division...and proceeded to go undefeated in the higher division to meet our Girls Team - the Great White Sharks in the GF. It was a gripping final that transpired - goal by goal - the boys were only one goal up with one minute to go and finished the match with a win against the girls 8-6. It was a hard won battle with no love lost during the game, but of course, lots of love gained afterwards! A big congratulations to Lilly Wirth named MVP of the Grand Final. And to Olivia Casetta for highest goal scorer of the tournament. Thank you to our wonderful coaches and managers as well as parent supporters for assisting the club with your time and efforts.

Lice Cup December:

What a fantastic day we had on Sunday before Christmas, at our first ever Lice Cup participation with the senior Cronulla Water Polo Club. A massive 60 of our U10-U15 players were all mixed into four teams, with each team captained by one of our club coaches. It was such a great vibe to see the kids all mixed together, with the younger members being awarded more points for a goal, meaning the older ones HAD to encourage them to score. There were sneaky tactics and some suspect ref calls, but nobody drowned, despite Jimmy's best defensive efforts against 9 year olds.

A very enjoyable day, and we intend to continue our participation in this fantastic Cronulla Club tradition. We see this event as a key pillar of building club culture and inclusiveness with a goal to keep kids in the sport for fun and enjoyment and to become closer to the wider Cronulla Water Polo club.

Spring Saturday Super Sessions

Kicking off in July of 2019 we ran Saturday Super Spring Sessions. We had 49 registrations and received outstanding feedback from kids and parents. The focus was on skill development to get ready for the Summer competition, so that any new (or even existing) players would not feel out of their depth starting the Summer comp, which can generally start with only 1, or sometimes no training sessions before the rounds start. Two hours of skills and drills plus games at Sutho utility pool. We had brilliant support from younger members of club helping coach. Huge thanks and shout out to Ruby Johnstone, Rebel McFadden, Trina Johnson, Michael Wirth, Danny Kerr, Jack Winchester and Hayden Moller. Brilliant coaches and members of our community.

We aim to run this every spring now as it is a fantastic way to recruit, build skills and help Gunna financially with equipment needs and begin to think about subsidising tournament teams.

The season finished with “Delfina Day/Come and try it” - 70 kids came down to the event. Many playing water polo for the first time. Fun games, fun skill drills all run in conjunction with the Delfina Team., All the mums were delighted to see Tyler, AJ Roach and Kal (who gave up Canberra Cup to join) get in the water and play with the kids. Not too often two Olympians are your first coaches in a sport! Great sunny day that was fun and one we will do again!

What’s next: Presentation Day April 4 will change to Launch Day

It was our intention to have a presentation/party afternoon recognising managers, coaches and players. We had also planned a disco, BBQ and a raffles/games to raise money. Again

32 2020 Annual Report CRONULLA SUTHERLAND WATER POLO CLUB INC. this had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 rules. The committee of Wirthy, Trina and Jim - intend to change this to a 'kick off and welcome back' party now. Stay tuned for dates.

Gunna Invitational Academy.

The committee of Trina, Wirthy and Jim had put extensive thought and preparation into kicking off a Gunna Development Academy - open to all clubs. The goals of the Academy were to improve specific individual WP skills and game play that would give each kid a springboard to follow whatever water polo pathway they wanted to follow – whether it be social, Saturday comp or representative. We want to improve the skills of players showing up for metro selection at U14s. We had agreed an alliance with 6/8 to conduct basic measurements and build a WP dev plan for each child and had planned to employ NL and grade players in the club to teach and transfer the WP skills for each player.

Unfortunately, this also has been postponed. We currently have 70 registrations including ones from Newcastle, Orange and Cronulla. Arctic and Sutho clubs are also invited and their respective leaders informed. We are waiting on pool space. As soon as we secure a venue to train, Academy will begin. Again, stay tuned.

We are waiting and watching for when pools will open. As soon as this happens we will kick off Academy and open for Spring training and “Come and Try” days + an almighty kick off party, getting out of the house and playing Water Polo again.

All Stars

Due to consistent feedback over the first half of the season, which matched feedback from at least the last 5 years that parents were not happy with how the U7-U9 All Stars was run, we stepped in as a club and put forward an All Stars manager to manage the SSWPA junior coaches to help run the sessions on time and with relevant content. The feedback afterwards was MUCH happier parents and kids. We realise that this age group is placed at a point where many kids may choose to continue to play water polo, or opt out, if their sessions are not fun and productive, and much more importance needs to be placed on providing what is expected of these training sessions. We plan on continuing this role in future, as long as SSWPA agree.

Thank you

There are many people who come together in Gunnamatta Water Polo to make this club a success. Coaches, Managers, Scorers, and those who just do the little things all the time – thank you!

Parents. We thank you for efforts and bringing your children to this wonderful sport. We see this sport as a game for life and our plans for members of Gunnamatta is to ensure the children have the skills to follow what ever path way they choose. Thank you for trusting us.

A special call out to Mel Headley for stepping in and running the All Stars, Mark ‘Waino’ Wainman for his tournament and logistics work, Katherine Peacock for her tireless and constant efforts..at everything. Cathryn Johnson, Kurtis Stone, Matt Lancaster, Sergio

The super managers of Kate O’Halloran, Tiff Wirth, Sarah Dowling, Justine Lea, Bec Udemans, Ronnie Palazzi and many others!

A huge thank you to the committee of Cronulla Water Polo for their support of Gunnamatta. I would particularly would like to mention the support of Karen Kerr. Karen ran Gunnamatta for many years and her mentoring and guidance is always helpful and ensures we keep this great club strong.

I would personally like to thank Trina Johnson and Michael Wirth. Their passion, dedication and hard work has made this a very successful season. Whilst we didn’t get to do all we wanted and play as much as we wanted – it was a fantastic year. Thank you for your friendship and patience!

Life Members Report

The CSWPC Life Members team had huge plans for the second half of the year, the likes of which had never seen before (to borrow one of President Trump’s favourite clichès). Armed in our new team outfit we were to descend en masse at the Shark Tank to provide as much guidance to the AWPL match officials as etiquette would allow. Strategies and battle plans were to be formalised at a team dinner arranged by our 2 I/C Jenny Liessmann, who, it should be noted, has waged many a successful campaign in pools the world over.

The boundless energy driving this magnificent team of water polo stars is fuelled solely on our mantra of, “the older we get - the better we were!” Which undoubtedly lends credibility to our cries from the bleachers, “ya gotta be kidding ref!” at any decision made against our Sharks, warranted or otherwise.

Unfortunately, the cancellation of the AWPL season due to COVID-19 has meant the water polo fraternity will have to wait for the resumption of play to witness Team Life Members in full flight.

Rest assured though, with social distancing restrictions easing, and with the reopening of the Shires’ many Speakeasies, meetings will be held, planning will continue and this eclectic team will emerge from this annus horribilis bigger, better and stronger (thanks again Donald) than ever before.

Troy Stockwell Vice President – Life Members

Officiating and Accreditation

Most of the first part of the season was spent following up coaches to complete on-line training modules so that they could be accredited so they would be able to coach at Nationals.

Time was also spent ensuring WPNSW and WPA had updated our records of WWC for all parents who were attending nationals had been included for all.

All parents who were attending nationals also had to complete the online training for officials. It took time as it was difficult to get reports showing which members had completed.

Sandra Holden and Rebel McFadden were selected as referees at AYC.

Capital Works Report

Another tough year with slow progress on our plans to build a pool behind Cronulla High School. The team at SIWPA have had to deal with some big issues (we all know the issues) but continue down a path that will have a huge impact on the long term future of our club.

The ever elusive DA was finally lodged with Sutherland Council and the last 3 months of the year we have been working towards making some final adjustments for its approval. Once approval is gained the only obstacle left is to secure the formal support and funding from the Local, State and Federal Governments. I would like to thank the hard work and effort put in by all the members of the SIWPA Board on behalf of our club. This project has taken a lot of time and many people on the board and organisations around them have contributed an incredible amount of free resources to make this happen.

In May/June we have had some additional activity stimulated by the Government looking for "Shovel Ready Projects" which we are trying to use to our advantage and luckily have the full support of the various Water Polo peak bodies, Local Educational, Sporting and Community Groups. Once this happens we will engage additional resources that have been recently volunteered to see the project move from plans to a pool! This project is a true Community Project and supports not only an active lifestyle for the Sutherland Shire but strengthens Water Polo and our Clubs potential and profile in our communities.
