Some 2,000 research fellows, grad uate students, and professionals in business and government each year work with the Center's international staff in cooperative study, training, and research. They examine major issues related to population, resources and development, the environment, culture, and communication in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. The Center was established in 1960 by the United States Congress, which provides principal funding. Support also comes from more than twenty Asian and Pacific governments, as well as private agencies and corporations. Kurosawa's Ran: Reception and Interpretation ANN THOMPSON AKIRA KUROSAWA'S Ran (literally, war, riot, or chaos) was chosen as the first film to be shown at the First Tokyo International Film Festival in June 1985, and it opened commercially in Japan to record-breaking busi ness the next day. The director did not attend the festivities associated with the premiere, however, and the reception given to the film by Japa nese critics and reporters, though positive, was described by a French critic who had been deeply involved in the project as having "something of the air of an official embalming" (Raison 1985, 9). -

The city of Capernaum was a small fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, about two miles west of the Jordan River. A. The Hebrew name for this village is Keœfar NahΩum, which means, “village of Nahum.” B. While this ancient town is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, it is mentioned sixteen times in the New Testament. C. Matthew refers to Capernaum as our Lord’s “own city” (Matt 9:1), for it became the center of His Galilean ministry. D. This is interesting since He was not born in Capernaum, His parents did not live in there, and He did not grow up there! E. Jesus performed more miracles and preached more sermons in and around Capernaum than at any other place during His entire ministry. F. The residents of this prosperous town were common people who made their living from fishing, agriculture, and trade. G. The road leading to Damascus passed nearby, providing a commercial link with regions to the north and south. H. Capernaum was also a garrison town, housing a detachment of Roman soldiers, under a centurion, along with government officials. II. It was in the vicinity of Capernaum that Jesus chose several of His apostles. -

DAY 5 Monday – JERICHO, CITY OF DAVID, HEZEKIAH’S TUNNEL Wadi Qelt, hike the old road from Jerusalem to Jericho — Jericho, where the Israelites entered Canaan — City of David, archaeologi- cal site dating from the time of Abraham — Hezekiah’s tunnel, walk through to the Pool of Siloam. Trade and Commerce At Sepphoris, Israel Sarah VanSickle 1998 Honors Research Dr. Dennis E. Groh, Advisor I Introduction Trade patterns in the Near East are the subject of conflicting interpretations. Researchers debate whether Galilean cities utilized trade routes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean or were self-sufficient, with little access to trade. An analysis of material culture found at specific sites can most efficiently determine the extent of trade in the region. If commerce is extensive, a significant assemblage of foreign goods will be found; an overwhelming majority of provincial artifacts will suggest minimal trade. -

Insignificance Given Meaning: The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Masako Inamoto Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance Professor Naomi Fukumori Professor Shelley Fenno Quinn Copyright by Masako Inamoto 2010 Abstract Kita Morio (1927-), also known as his literary persona Dokutoru Manbô, is one of the most popular and prolific postwar writers in Japan. He is also one of the few Japanese writers who have simultaneously and successfully produced humorous, comical fiction and essays as well as serious literary works. He has worked in a variety of genres. For example, The House of Nire (Nireke no hitobito), his most prominent work, is a long family saga informed by history and Dr. Manbô at Sea (Dokutoru Manbô kôkaiki) is a humorous travelogue. He has also produced in other genres such as children‟s stories and science fiction. This study provides an introduction to Kita Morio‟s fiction and essays, in particular, his versatile writing styles. Also, through the examination of Kita‟s representative works in each genre, the study examines some overarching traits in his writing. For this reason, I have approached his large body of works by according a chapter to each genre. Chapter one provides a biographical overview of Kita Morio‟s life up to the present. The chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of Kita‟s father, Saitô Mokichi (1882-1953), who is one of the most prominent tanka poets in modern times. -

It is also dedicated to my friends from a video game called Celtic Heroes which we’ve been playing together for more than 2 years. They were my inspiration. Enjoy! Chapter 1 : Going hunting In the beautiful kingdom Donn there was peace and harmony for the last 500 years. All ended with the evil wizard Gelebron’ s obssession for Miiah, the king' s beautiful young wife. But let’ s see how it all happened...... Miiah is a ravishing dark haired healer . She is the mistress of the Enchanted Forest, a land feared by the evil doers and sought as refuge by honest people who suffer at the hands of the first category. Miiah' s best friend is Bratty, a beautiful but quick tempered mage. So whenever Miiah , or the Lady of the Forest, as she is known to most of the people, needs advice, she goes to Bratty. -

The dissidents, including off-campus protesters and black leaders, also demanded that Columbia end its ties with the Institute of Defense Analysis (IDA) because of an alleged connection with the Vietnam war. James S. Kunen, a student and writer, chronicled these events in The Strawberry Statement. Columbia used to be called King’s College. They changed the name in 1784 because they wanted to be patriotic and Columbia means America. -
