Accepted: 26/05/2017. ABSTRACT This article explores the representation of family and individuals in Anne Enright's novel The Green Road (2015) by engaging with Bauman's sociological category of “liquid modernity” (2000). In The Green Road, Enright uses a recurrent topic, a family gathering, to observe the multiple forms in which particular experiences seem to have suffered a process of fragmentation during the Celtic Tiger period. A comprehensive analysis of the form and plot of the novel exposes the ideological contradictions inherent in the once hegemonic notion of Irish family and brings attention to the different forms of individual vulnerability, aging in particular, for which Celtic Tiger Ireland has no answer. In spite of the parallel plights between Ireland and Spain, in their endeavours to deal with deadlock mandates, such judgement seems fair in retrospect. It took the Irish only two months to negotiate a way out of such crisis, forming a minority government with the re- elected Fine Gael Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who managed to pact with the historically rival party Fianna Fáil. -

The Novel and the Short Story in Ireland: Readership, Society and Fiction, 1922-1965. Anthony Halpen, The Institute of Irish Studies, The University of Liverpool. This thesis considers the novel and the short story in the decades following the achievement of Irish independence from Britain in 1922. During these years, many Irish practitioners of the short story achieved both national and international acclaim, such that 'the Irish Short Story' was recognised as virtually a discrete genre. Writers and critics debated why Irish fiction-writers could have such success in the short story, but not similar success with their novels. Henry James had noticed a similar situation in the United States of America in the early nineteenth century. James decided the problem was that America's society was still forming - that the society was too 'thin' to support successful novel-writing. Irish writers and critics applied his arguments to the newly-independent Ireland, concluding that Irish society was indeed the explanation. Irish society was depicted as so unstructured and fragmented that it was inimical to the novel but nurtured the short story. Ireland was described variously: "broken and insecure" (Colm Tóibín), "often bigoted, cowardly, philistine and spiritually crippled" (John McGahern) and marked by "inward-looking stagnation" (Dermot Bolger). -

Round table: The Lost Female Tradition: Predecessors, Contemporaries and Successors of James Joyce in Irish Writing Chair: Margarita Estévez Saá (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, [email protected]). Participants: María Jesús Lorenzo Modia (Universidad de A Coruña, [email protected]), José María Tejedor Cabrera (Universidad de Sevilla, [email protected]), José Manuel Estévez Saá (Universidad da Coruña, [email protected]) To study the connections between a series of Irish women writers and Joyce implies doing justice to those among them who were ahead of their time on a formal level or as regards the content of their works, in spite of the fact that critics have not always recognised this, due to some prejudices and critical stances which are erroneous in our opinion, namely the unfounded consideration that Irish women writers have opted for conservative non-experimental forms and have dealt with the private sphere of experience (O’Faolain 1885; Patten 1990). In the case of those Irish women writers who came after Joyce, little has been done with regards to a fair assessment of their formal and thematic contribution to the history of Irish literature, and comparisons with the Irish genius have been avoided, probably due to the late critical appraisal of their contribution to Irish literature (basically from the 1990s onwards) and, above all, because of the still on-going debate that separates critics who see Joyce as a misogynistic author from others who signal his interest for gender studies and go as far as to interpret his aesthetics as representative of “écriture feminine”. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/ersjes.39.2018.313-317 This collection of critical essays deals with the institution of the family as a means of presenting a current picture of dysfunction in the various types of households in Ireland. Edited by Marisol Morales-Ladrón, it is divided into three sections. The first is a comprehensive introduction to home and family, as well as an overview of the crisis of these two entities. The following section, which forms the main body of the work, focuses on Irish narrative and filmic discourses of dysfunction. It includes five essays, one by the editor herself, along with others by Inés Praga, Asier Altuna-García de Salazar, Juan F. Elices and Rosa González-Casademont. The final section consists of three interviews, one with the writer Emer Martin and two with film directors Jim and Kristen Sheridan, respectively. The organisation and structure of the chapters is comprehensive and cohesive, and gives the reader a progressive insight into the concept of the contemporary Irish family as depicted in narrative and film. The innovative nature of this work serves to raise awareness of the wide variety of family configurations in the country. Many of the new familial patterns already existed in the past, coexisting with traditional nuclear ones, although they were not entirely accepted by society or seen on equal terms. Such forms of households sometimes even lacked a neutral descriptive term, referred to only in derogatory ways. -
