To All,

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Race Officials and Race Volunteers for getting us through an incredibly busy spring sailing season. All the boxes are now filled for people respon- sible for the remaining sailing events this spring so we are in good shape for leadership until the Fall.

There are still some slots to fill for the Lowcountry Regatta and Bruce Harmer will be talking about that.

Thanks especially to those that stepped up to fill PRO slots, event chairs and seminar leader- ship. We have a great program but it takes commitment and hard work from many people to pull it off. We all have other life obligations so when someone fits our sailing program into their busy schedule it is a dedication and greatly appreciated.

We could not have the many Race Days and Regattas if it wasn’t for our Race Volunteers and we owe you a big THANK YOU!

If you haven’t noticed our Sailing Website lately, it is morphing into a very organized presen- tation thanks to Tauri Duer, Fleet Captain, who has taken on the big, big task of fine tuning the motor of our website. We don’t see the motor but that’s where all the fine tuning takes place and only certain people know how to tweak it. Walt Gnann was our original tweater, followed by Si- mon Jenkins and now Tauri. We’re in good tweaking hands, which is Greek to most of us.

Keep checking back and you will see more and more information and an easy way to access everything.

Thanks to Tauri!

Frank Pontious

Regatta Chairman

The 12th Annual Classic Boat Rally, held April 25-27, 2018, featured nine classic designed boats from Missouri and New jersey as well as South Carolina. The weather was perfect, with temperatures in the upper 70s and winds from the south and west in a range of 8 to 15 kts. Meaning that the races were mostly reaches and runs with speed being more the critical factor than strategy on the water.

All nine boats (after two last-minute cancellations) finished the four races from Savannah to Beaufort within a few minutes of each other in very close competition. Based in handicaps, the slower boats started ahead of the faster ones, bringing real excitement at the finish line as many finished within seconds of each other.

The queen of the event was “Silent Maid”, a legendary catboat owned by Peter Kellogg and skippered by Henry Co- lie, both of New Jersey. “Silent Maid is 33 feet long, has a beam of 12½ feet, displaces 14,000 pounds, and carries over 1,100 square feet of sail in her “cruising” rig, 1,400 square feet is used for serious racing. She was brought down to The Classic Boat Rally on an 18-wheel flatbed truck and set and launched in Charleston, then towed to Savannah be- hind her 35-foot tender.

She is shown below arriving at Savannah Yacht Club.

RACE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our racing program depends on Volunteers from the club to help with all aspects of the racing. If you are new to Volunteering, the list below will give you an idea of what each position involves. Please keep in mind that the race committee works together as a team, so these descriptions will give you an idea of the basic roles, but there is flexibility and fluidity in the tasks to make sure that everything can get done and that everyone has the help they need to fulfill their role.

WHY SHOULD YOU SIGN UP TO BE A RACE VOLUNTEER?

 It counts as volunteer hours  You get to spend the day on the water  It’s a great way to learn about the rules of racing and sailing in general  It’s the best seat in the house to watch the racing

DO YOU NEED EXPERIENCE TO BE A RACE VOLUNTEER?

 NO!!  New volunteers can sign up to be an observer and have no specific responsibility while on the RC boat  Another great role for new volunteers is the mark/safety boat crew as the skipper will be there to help guide you in your role

HOW DO YOU FIND OUT MORE?

 Come to the training for Race Volunteers at the: Race Committee Seminar on March 10th @ 8:30am

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP?

 Go to www.signupgenius.com/go/ 20f084aafae29a1fb6-pros and pick your date and position

Spring Series 2018

Celebrate the beginning of spring by signing up to sail or volunteer in the Spring Series!

The Dinghy Spring and Fall Series Regattas are at the core of the BYSC Rac- ing Program with a good turnout of local sailors throughout the series. Though many of the participants are seasoned with serious skills, they go out of their way to welcome adult and junior newcomers and beginning sailors into the fold. A full Race Committee allows local sailors to gain weekly practice in an environment of friendly competition. The Spring Series runs for 6 consecutive Sundays and has a final race on Memorial Day.

When: Consecutive Sundays from April 8 to May 13, first horn @ 2pm Monday, 5/28, Memorial Day, first horn @ 1pm

Who: Dinghy Sailors – Included classes: MC, Laser, Sunfish, 420, Opti, Bic, Evo, JY15

How: Register Online Here! All sailors, including skippers and crew must be registered. Please complete the registration online and bring your check to the club for payment. If you sail more than one type of boat as the weather conditions change, please fill out a separate registration form for each boat. Only one fee will apply. All skippers are expected to check in with the Race Committee when they head out on the water each day so the Race Committee knows who they have on the race course.

Volunteer: Sign up Online Here! Our racing is dependent on our fabulous volunteers! We are looking for a num- ber of positions for the race volunteers for the Spring Series.

Spirit of America

Spirit of America is looking for volunteers!

What is Spirit of America?

Spirit of America is the premier youth boating education program. It has been operating in Beaufort for the past 5 years as the YMCA boating program, but it has recently been transferred over to Junior Sailing of Beaufort.

The program is an innovative year round opportunity and STEM educational experience for middle school aged students, 11 -15 years of age, that combines a summer-camp atmosphere with classroom discipline. Each program participant is exposed to sail, power, paddle, personal watercraft, and large vessel disciplines, rules and practice. In addition, the students spend time in the classroom passing their state boating education course, in the controlled environment of a pool, and in natural settings to build up their confidence and competency.

The program is offered at a very low cost and is supported by grants, sponsorships, volunteers, and donations. Tuition for the week long program is $50. Families who cannot afford that cost can apply for scholarships to further reduce the cost. The point of this program is to expose ALL children to safe boating and to grow their knowledge and confidence.

What types of volunteers are we looking for?

Boaters! Spirit of America volunteers teach the students about boating safely on kayaks, SUPs, canoes, power boats, sailboats, large vessels, and personal watercraft. Instruction is provided in the classroom, pool, and on the water. Sail, paddle, and power volunteers accompany the students and lead them through the waterways surrounding the Port Royal Maritime Center.

What do volunteers do?

Junior Sailing of Beaufort Update

Very exciting news, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has taken over the nationally recognized Spirit of America program loca- tion in Beaufort. With over 20 locations across the country, this program came to Beaufort about 4 years ago and had been hosted by the YMCA and on-the-water activities took place at the Port Royal Sound Foundation. We plan to host this sea- sons sessions at the Port Royal Sound Foundation location and are looking for vol- unteers to help teach sailing, paddling and powerboat operation during one or more of the 4 planned sessions.

April 9-14 (Spring Break Session) July 9-13 August 13-17

More information can be found on our website at: https://www.beaufortsailing.com/spirit-of-america/ With any questions or interest in assisting, please contact Chris or Tauri Duer or any other member of the Junior Sailing of Beaufort Board of Directors.

Adult Sailing Seminars at BYSC

It looks like the warmer weather has stirred peoples’ desire to sail. We finally have our first official class scheduled for May 17 through May 20. There is one open spot left if you would like to get on board. The class meets on Thursday and Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30. Then the class meets on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 to 4:30. If those dates don’t work for you, check out Signup Genius page here: http:// www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4faba92ca2fa7-adult. Select some months that work for you. Get some of your friends to visit the page, too. As soon as four people select the same month, Junior Sailing of Beaufort’s adult instructor will contact you to nail down dates. All of the classes are taught aboard the S2, which is a 27-foot keelboat. In the past seminars, partici- pants learned aboard the safe and stable S2 with four students and one instructor. The instructor is fellow BYSC member Scott Gordon. Scott is a US Sailing Level I Small Boat Instruc- tor. He is also an educator in the public schools with 20 years’ experience. His sailing experience includes racing small boats, keelboats, and coastal cruising. He has taught people sailing from ages 5-70 in the past 20 years. The cost for this seminar is $275 for members and $325 for non-members. That includes 16 hours of instruction over four days. Twelve of those hours are on the water. Four of the hours are in the classroom and on the dock. In the past few weeks, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has up- dated their webpage with a good deal of new information. One of the pages is devoted to the Adult Sailing Program. Check it out at this address: https://www.beaufortsailing.com/adult-sailing/. Take it a step fur- ther and sign up for a class!
