Sigma Beta Sorority Battles Cancer with Johns Hopkins Medicine Baltimore, Maryland- May 31, 2013 The Sigma Beta Sorority Inc., a national philanthropic organization, marks ten years of partnership with Johns Hopkins in their fight against pancreatic cancer. Sigma Beta is comprised of 36 chapters throughout the United States. Over the past decade this extraordinary group of women has raised more than $210,000 to support pancreatic cancer research. On Friday May 31, 2013, fifteen members of Sigma Beta Sorority from eight different chapters visited with Dr. Iacobuzio-Donahue and her team at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. During their visit to Johns Hopkins, the group toured the pancreatic cancer laboratories where cutting edge research is being conducted, had a private tour of the hospital, and attended a reception for donors. Over the years, Dr. Iacobuzio-Donahue has traveled to the Sigma Beta Annual meeting to propose a grant and share the progress made by her team with the help of the philanthropy from Sigma Beta Sorority. “With their invaluable help, we have made great strides in this area and I am deeply grateful,” says Dr. Iacobuzio-Donahue. Sigma Beta Sorority Inc., founded in 1923 in Ft. P a g e 4 Johns Hopkins Visit

On May 31, the National Board, along with 9 other Sigma Beta’s attended a special visit to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. We were able to tour the Pancreatic Cancer Research Lab that we’ve supported over the last several years. We met with Chris- tine Iacobuzio-Donahue and was also able to meet all of the members of her lab. This was a great experience to see what actually goes on “behind the scenes”.

I am a retired Day-Care and Pre-School Provider, located in my home. I have taken care of 10 children, ages from 6 weeks to kindergarten. I have a great love of children and enjoyed my work for many years.

I have lived in Greenfield, IN for 48 years. My family of 3 children and 8 grandchildren keep us very busy. My husband, Kevin, has Multiple Sclerosis, we have one child serving in Af- ghanistan and our 9 year old granddaughter lives with us and we care care for her, as she has Muscular Dystrophy.

I was invited to join Rho Chapter by my good friend of 5 years and member, Sandy Bar- bera. All the members have made me feel very welcome. My greatest joy comes from shar- ing time with my family, crocheting and sewing. I am currently busy making items for Rho Chapters' "Fall Bazaar".

I was born at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, June 23rd, 1949 and from there began my journey as an army brat! My family traveled from army base to army base around this great country including Alaska where I at- tended first grade. We also lived in Germany, where we visited concentration camps, and saw the wall go up but also visited the Vatican and the Eiffel Tower! While it was quite an interesting childhood, I was always the new kid in school and did not form lasting friendships. My father retired from the army so that we could go to one high school in Kingsport, . Here I really was the new kid in this small one high school town! I went to college at the in Chattanooga where I completed a degree in education and met and married my wonderful husband! We have been blessed with three beautiful redheaded daughters and one very caring son. I spent forty years teaching students who were blind and then in the last ten years, deaf students also. Not the career I chose, but the Lord leads in mysterious ways!

During the busyness of raising four children and careers, we always found time to volunteer for the special Olympics. I recently retired and began to look for opportunities to serve where the Lord would lead me now. I met Dawn Zoll, an amazing person, at a yoga studio and she invited me to a meeting to learn about Sigma Beta sorority, I am very honored to be asked to be a part of this wonderful organization with all these opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community. I feel that have found awesome lifetime friends in my new sisters!

I graduated from Hancock High School in 2009. I am currently employed at Jim Dandy's, a local favorite Greenfield restaurant. I am the granddaughter of Sandy Barbera, Rho member, and she invited me to join the chapter. I am proud to say that I am the youngest member and was welcomed with open arms (something about new young blood in the chapter?!).

I am very active and involved with activities in my church. I love working with children, so I teach Sunday School, work in the "Kidz Zone" program and baby sit the children during services.

For 10 years I was involved in the 4H program. I breed, raised and showed pigs in both the Hancock (Greenfield) County and Indianapolis State Fairs.

Taking pictures of family, expected mothers, newborns and Senior Citizens are one of my passions, so I am taking this to the next level of working and starting a photography business. The members are helping me by making me the official chapter photographer. I am also getting involved with the chapter's fund raising events. My first big assignment is the new chairperson for one of our biggest money making projects, Easter Baskets.

I feel like God has called me to help people in our community who are less fortunate & I am honored to be doing it with this group of women. A little bit about me is that I married the love of my life, David, almost a year ago! David & I are a pretty active couple, we do crossfit together and I also play sand volley- ball once a week. I work at an outpatient cancer center twice a week as an RN & my full time job is mentoring women with Mary Kay Cosmetics.

MICHELLE LEWIS (right) I am so happy to be joining Sigma Beta, after all it is in my blood. WEB SITE UPDATE

Hi sisters and greetings from West Virginia!

In case you missed it, my address was corrected from Virginia to West Virginia in the President's List. I hope mail has not gone astray! I have received many chapter officer lists so far and made updates as needed.

The 2013 Convention page at sigmabeta.org has been launched and includes many valuable links and info for planning a wonderful weekend to celebrate 90 years of Sigma Beta Sorority! Fort Wayne beckons!

I am continuing my quest to repair the Reports on our web site, and I truly appreciate everyone's patience. It has been a jour- ney and I have been working with some great people who have offered guidance and their expertise, as they have taught me so much about the nuts and bolts of a web site. Big changes are coming to sigmabeta.org, and I can't wait for you all to see what's been in the works.

See you in Fort Wayne,

Sigma Beta Dime Fund Chairs Judi Spector and Cathy Slosky – Delta XI Chapter

Hi Sisters:

2013 is half over and convention is a mere four months away. When we left Clearwater last year Bessie was put out to pasture to rest up for Sigma Beta’s 90th Birthday. You know we say “what happens at convention stays at convention”. Well in Bessie’s case it didn’t stay at convention and she is proud to announce her new addition, Jim Bob Bovine. Jim Bob will make his first dime fund appearance in Fort Wayne so be on the lookout for him.

We asked you to dig deeper into your pockets for the Dime Fund in honor of our 90th year. Our Scholarship Recipients count on our support. Please don’t forget them. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.” We can make the difference and be their world. So be kind to yourself and give to the Dime Fund. Your act of kindness will provide funds toward a recipi- ent’s education; an education that can go on and help change the world we live in today.

Until we meet again keep sending in those Dime Fund Donations.
