Sunday, January 26 The Game Room 6:30 p.m.

Nabucco Juan Pons Fenena Wendy White Abigaille Maria Guleghina Zaccaria Samuel Ramey Ismaele Gwyn Hughes Jones Conductor James Levine Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus

Verdi’s first emotionally mature and hugely successful opera Nabucco was composed in 1841 and first performed at La Scala in 1842. Nabucco is short for Nabucodonosor, the Italian name for the Babylonian king we know in English as Nebuchadnezzar, who in 587 BCE conquered the Israelites, destroyed their temple in Jerusalem, and forced them as slaves to move to Babylon. Verdi’s opera is in many ways inaccurate both historically and biblically. But what really matters is that it is a gripping story of tangled human emotions, morality, and immorality on a grand scale. It might have been written within any number of dramatic contexts. Yet, the choice of this particular context is itself interesting, in its own historical setting. In the 1840s, romantic nationalism was a young concept in Europe and in Italy was still incubating. The context—an oppressed mass of Israelites as backdrop for acts of individual hatred and violence among venal characters who rule Babylon by military might—has been interpreted as a call for Italian audiences at the time to support the nationalist cause in their country. It appeared a likely explanation for extreme audience identification with and enthusiasm for the justly famous “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.” This moving meditation combines evocations of suffering with pleas for mercy from God. It quickly earned demands for an encore, which has become traditional (and unusual for a chorus number). But careful research has proven that what made the Italians go wild was not connection with a nationalist movement against current suffering but identification with the concept of seeking mercy from God. Thus, the most interesting aspect of the context is the Old-Testament juxtaposition of the “False God” of Baal (or Bel) and the “True God” of Judaism. The double interventions by the God of the Israelites dramatically change the lives of Nabucco, Abigaille, and the Hebrews, fully altering the outcome of the story. In this morality play, it’s not people who are good or bad. It’s whether or how they struggle to overcome their human shortcomings through identification with an Almighty who can offer them mercy.
