6 Shawnee State Men’s Basketball Outlook The Shawnee State Men's Basketball Team is counting on their veterans to lead the way to a successful year. The Bears return three starters from last year's squad, who are are looking to improve upon their disappointing 9-21 2010-11 season. Leading the Bears is junior Tyler Morgan. Morgan has been the Bears' leading scorer the past two seasons, averaging over 14 points per game. Juniors Mark Bryant and Tyler Boyles return to their starting spots. Boyles averaged 13 points per game last year, while Bryant averaged over 10 points and seven rebounds a game. Also, return- ing to his starting role for the Bears is junior Ian Nixson. Nixson was sidelined last season because of injury and looks to return to his leadership role on the court as point guard.

Also returning from last years' squad is senior Alex Bruns and sophomores Andrew Devlin and Trevor Banks. Devlin will get the nod as starting center and looked at as a key contributor. Banks and Bruns will also be counted on by the Bears for valuable minutes.

Newcomers for the Bears include freshmen Colin Kennedy, Austin Vance, Tyler Farley and Terrence Smith. Kennedy, a 6-7 center from Catlettsburg, Kentucky, averaged over 12 points and nine rebounds per game at Chesapeake High School and will be looked at by the Bears as a factor down low. Farley, Vance and Smith will help with the Bears with depth in the back court. Farley, 6-0 shooting guard from Worthington, Kentucky, averaged over 14 points and six assists per game at Raceland-Worthington High School. Smith, a 5-10 guard from Vanceburg, Kentucky, averaged 16 points for the Lions of Lewis Country High School. Vance, a 5-10 guard from Lenore, West Vir- ginia, averaged 23 points and seven assists for the Tug Valley Panthers.

Shawnee State kicks off a six game road trip to the open the 2011-2012 season at Cincinnati Christian on November 3. The Bears enter their second season in the Mid- South Conference, the premier conference in Division I Men's Basketball, and will face three preseason ranked teams including 2011 National Champions and preseason No. 1 ranked Pikeville, No. 8 Georgetown and No. 17 St. Catharine. Shawnee State opens conference action at UVa-Wise on November 19th. Another premier opponent on the Bears' schedule is NCAA Division I Kent State, which the Bears will to travel to on January 2.

7 Shawnee State Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jeff Hamilton Jeff Hamilton Head Coach- 10th Season

Jeff Hamilton enters his tenth season as the head men’s bas- ketball coach and third as the Athletic Director at Shawnee State University. Hamilton looks to build on another solid re- cruiting class and find the consistency to compete at the top level of the Mid-South Conference. His Bears are coming off a disappointing 9-21 season, their first competing at the NAIA Division I level.

Hamilton joined the SSU staff in the summer of 2001 as Geno Ford’s assistant coach. He took over the program the following year guiding the Bears to a 22-10 record and to the AMC Championship Game. He continues to play one of the toughest schedules in the NAIA, including a trip to take on the Golden Flash- es of Kent State University January 2, 2012. During his tenure the Bears have played the likes of Boston College, Florida State University, Texas Christian University, University of De- troit-Mercy and many other Division I opponents. Through the years his teams have continual- ly risen to the challenge of playing top competition throughout the country. In 2004-05 the Bears knocked off eventual National Champion Walsh twice during the regular season. In the 2008-09 season, Hamilton and the Bears went into #1 ranked Cedarville and took down the Yellow Jackets 61-50. Last year his young squad made national headlines as they knocked off second ranked Georgetown College, with Sophomore Tyler Morgan garnering national player of the week honors.

Hamilton has been coaching basketball since his graduation in 1996 from the College of Wooster. He has made stops in Jacksonville IL, at Illinois College and at where he was on Larry Hunter’s staff for two seasons. As Athletic Director, he has been in- strumental in transitioning Shawnee State into the Mid-South Conference and into the Division I ranks. At various times along the way, he has also coached golf, soccer, tennis and served as director of intramurals.

The Worthington, Ohio native holds a Bachelor’s degree from the College of Wooster and a Master’s Degree from Ohio University. As a point guard at Wooster, Hamilton helped guide the Scots to three national tournament appearances and a 91-21 record. He currently resides in Portsmouth with his wife Rhonda and their two year old son Luke.

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institu- tions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and women, offering championships in 15 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly over- sees the conference and the office of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

25 Shawnee State Men’s Basketball NAIA

About the NAIA The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa- tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men's sports pro- gram would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur- rently allocated to the women's sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde- pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive dif- ference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the lat- est cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student- athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Enroll- ment at Ohio’s newest four-year university is typically around 4,300.

The only public university in Ohio located on the banks of the Ohio River, Shawnee State Uni- versity features a beautifully-landscaped 52-acre campus featuring 21 buildings including the Advanced Technology Center that features one of only 50 Digistar II planetariums in the world; a three-story library featuring computers, Internet access, and thousands of books, CDs, gov- ernment documents, and periodicals; the 102,000 square foot Vern Riffe Center for the Arts featuring a 1,139 seat Main Theater; the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center that features weight rooms, racquetball courts, gymnasium, a dance classroom, and a junior Olympic-size swim- ming pool; and the Children’s Learning Center, a facility that serves as a learning center for the children of students/faculty/staff/community members and a lab school for teacher educa- tion students at SSU.

Shawnee State University has a rich tradition of success in athletics. The SSU women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II Na- tional Championship on March 16, 1999. A member of the American Mideast Conference since 1991, formerly the Mid-Ohio Conference, the Shawnee State Bears have won 17 cham- pionships.

In establishing the Center for International Programs and Activities (CIPA) Shawnee actively seeks to attract a growing number of international students to study at our university; has sis- ter-institution affiliations with universities in Germany, China, Spain, and Morocco; and offers on a regular basis many travel/study abroad courses to an ever increasing choice of destina- tion such as Greece, Britain, Spain, and Ireland in order to increase global awareness among its students. Some of these courses are funded by the Hodgden Travel Fund and many others are funded, in part, by CIPA.

Students come to SSU for many reasons including a low student/teacher ratio, more than $1.5 million in scholarships, and proven programs that ensure success in the classroom and in find- ing jobs.
