The University of North Alabama, established in 1830 as LaGrange College, became in 1872 the first state teachers college south of the Ohio River. UNA has developed into a regional university providing quality educational opportunities for students from the three- state region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Dr. John Thornell assumed the duties of interim president at the University of North Alabama on July 1, 2014. Thornell came to Florence in 2009 as vice president for academic affairs and provost at UNA. Thornell has served as vice president for academic affairs and professor of history at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount since 2007. He had previously served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., where he also served as interim president in 2003.

4 HEAD COACH JASON VAUGHN

Vaughn has earned two degrees from UNA, with a Bachelor’s degree in Fitness Management and a Master’s in Exercise Science. He is also a graduate of the PGA of America Management Program. He worked for four years as Assistant Golf Professional at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals courses and then two years as Head Golf Professional at RTJ. He is also director of instruction and owner of Vaughn Golf Academy.

He was inducted into the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2014.

All-South Region Former University of North Alabama All-American Jason 2003 Vaughn returned to the Lions’ program as head golf coach in August of 2013 and promptly led UNA to one of All-American its best seasons in recent years. 2002, 2003

In his first season as a collegiate coach, Vaughn helped Individual Finishes lead the Lions to strong Fall and Spring seasons that in NCAA DII National Tournament culminated in a ninth place finish at the 2014 NCAA 2000 - 20th Division II Championships. UNA finished tied for second 2002 - 2nd in the Gulf South Conference Championships and tied 2003 - 19th for sixth in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional. UNA Male Student-Athlete of the Year A four-year letterman on UNA golf teams from 2000-03, 2002 Vaughn helped lead the Lions to three NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances and finished as the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame individual runner-up in the 2002 championship. Vaughn 2014 earned All-Gulf South Conference honors in 2002 and All-South Region honors in 2003. He was also a two- time All-American, earning a second-team selection in 2002 and a third-team spot in 2003. GREER RECEIVES 2009 PHIL MICKELSON AWARD University of North Alabama fresh- man Jake Greer of Birmingham, Ala. was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Phil Mickelson Award as the top freshman golfer in the NCAA Di- vision II. MUNSON IS 2010 JACK NICKLAUS AWARD WINNER

University of North Alabama senior Brett Munson of Louis- ville, Ky., was the 2010 recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award as the Division II National Golfer of the Year. The award was presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Munson won the Gulf South Confer- ence Championship and was a first-team All-South Region and All-American selection. Since 1976, UNA has had 13 different golfers earn first, second or third-team All-American honors, with Brett Munson and Jason Vaughn earning All-American honors twice. In addition, UNA golfers have received honorable mention All-American honors 12 additional times. Al Hay, Daniel Creel and Brett Munson earned first-team All-American honors. Jake Greer is the only Lion to be selected All-American and Academic All-America@, while Greer, Munson and Wes Smith were selected All-American and GCAA All-America Scholar.

GSC History Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its 44th year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new GSC Members league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started University of Alabama-Huntsville GULF SOUTH by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history.
