It has been one hundred years since Finn Juhl was born on January 30, 1912, and all over the world – from Denmark to Japan and from the USA to South Korea - the occasion is being celebrated with special exhibi- tions. Recently, Finn Juhl designs have regained the same level of popularity and global interest that he enjoyed during the 1950’s. An international breakthrough Finn Juhl was the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recog- nition. His work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. In 1951, Baker Furniture launched a Finn Juhl-designed line of furniture. The launch was to coincide with the completion of his most prestigious project – the design of the Trusteeship Council Chamber in the United Nations headquarters in New York City. At this time, Finn Juhl was well into his most productive decade as a designer. Between 1944 and 1955, he created nearly all of the pieces of furniture which would later become synonymous with his name – the FJ-44 chair, the FJ-45 chair, the FJ-48 chair, the FJ-49/ Chieftain’s chair, and the FJ-53 reading chair. It was also during this decade that he, along with cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, developed the sensuous and sculptural shapes in wood, which gave his modernist furniture its special character. Craftsmanship merged with a modern and artistic expression - without compromising function. Finn Juhl’s early years as a furniture designer Although the decade marks the height of Finn Juhl’s work, one should not underestimate the importance of his early pieces of furniture. In 1937, Finn Juhl had already started his cooperation with Niels Vodder. Together, they provided interior design and furniture for private customers. Similar to other architects at that time - Flemming Lassen and Viggo Boesen, for example – Finn Juhl also explored and challenged the sculptural form of heavy, plush armchairs and sofas during these early years. One of his most distinctive pieces from this period is the ”Pelican” from 1940. Many of Finn Juhl’s original, early pieces are, today, only known from literature. Those which still exist are seen only on rare occasions, and generally carry a high price. In 2004, for example, Bruun Rasmussen sold a ”Pelican” for DKK 240,000! A common feature of the overstuffed furniture is its sculptural quality. In the decade following the “Pelican”, Finn Juhl developed this sculptural quality further, and then transferred it to his new favourite material – wood. The last phase of a life’s work After his international breakthrough and success in the 1950’s, Finn Juhl’s cooperation with Niels Vodder ended in 1959. They apparently stretched their forms to the limit, and their patience had worn thin. Finn Juhl continued arranging exhibitions and designed furniture for several producers, such as the cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan. Although he remained a central figure in 831_juhl_s001-009_start.indd 6 30/08/12 17.30 the world of design, jobs became fewer. Just before his death in 1989, he experienced the emerging rediscovery of his furniture, as a retrospective exhibition was being planned, in Japan. The exhibition opened in 1990. Entry into the auction market Here at Bruun Rasmussen, we have had the pleasure of selling Finn Juhl’s furniture since the 1980’s. At a time when the Rococo, Louis XVI, and Empire styles were capturing high prices at auction, Finn Juhl’s furniture found its way into the auction houses as good, used furniture - at reasonable prices. One of our most experienced specialists, with us for 40 years, visited Finn Juhl’s home in the early 1980’s to evaluate a painting. When he returned to the office, he agreed with the founder, Arne Bruun Rasmussen, that it was incredible that anybody could live in such a dull home! This scepticism towards Finn Juhl designs was common in the auction business at the time. It was later replaced, however, by a growing interest in, understan- ding of, and delight with these same pieces. Since the late 1990’s, Finn Juhl’s furniture has been a regular part of Bruun Rasmussen’s auctions. A tribute to Finn Juhl The preparations for this Finn Juhl tribute gained momentum during a visit to Japan earlier this year, where I, Frederik Bruun Rasmussen, was met by an enormous interest in the Danish furniture designer. This was exemplified by the construction of an exact copy of Finn Juhl’s house in Takayama, the opening of which I had the pleasure of participa- ting in on Finn Juhl’s 100th birthday. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to meet the Japanese design collector, and connoisseur, professor Noritsugu Oda, author of several books about Finn Juhl and Danish design. We are honoured that Mr. Noritsugu Oda will attend the opening of our preview on Thursday, September 13th, where he will speak about his passion for Finn Juhl at 4 pm.

Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark. In 1936, at the age of 22, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, later returning as a teacher. In 1943 he opened his own design studio and created the Chinese Chair, which, along with his 1949 Round Chair, formed the basis for many of his later chairs. The Round Chair became known simply as The Chair. While The Chair is probably the main icon of Wegner’s career, the Wishbone Chair is widely considered to be his most successful design. Hans J. Wegner was also a brilliant light designer. His pendant from 1962, “The Pendant” has been in production ever since. Both The Pendant and his futuristic Opala-series – originally designed in the seventies for Hotel Scandinavia in Copenhagen – are now manufactured by Pandul. Hans J. Wegner received many international awards for his work and in June 1997, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by The Royal College of Art in London. NOVEMBER 2020 face time CROSSlines woven in time Celebrating 65 years at the loom, textile icon Hanne Vedel has secured a place in Danish design history Even a pandemic can’t slow down this 87-year-old. In early September, weaving artist Hanne Vedel was a star presence at Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design fair, one of the first industry events to go live—IRL— since COVID-19 hit. Her one-of-a-kind rugs were exhibited at a pop-up show mounted by Kjellerup Væveri, the mill that produces Vedel’s minimalist upholstery fabrics (including those covering the Finn Juhl chairs at the U.N. Trusteeship Council Chambers in New York). Not to mention the octogenarian still works the loom daily as creative chief of Spindegården, the studio founded by famed weaver Paula Trock in 1948 and helmed by Vedel since 1970. Over the decades, Vedel has main- tained the atelier’s celebrated legacy of handcraftsmanship and cemented its commercial success via industrially pro- duced textile collections. Along the way, she’s collaborated with some of the most prominent modernist luminaries—Juhl, plus Grete Jalk and Hans J. Wegner—and today counts the Danish royal family and clergy members among her devoted clientele. Vedel’s signature style stands the test of time: solids and stripes rendered in a bold, happy palette grounded by muted tones and skillfully constructed of wool, cotton, or silk. Renewed interest in mid- century Danish design and sustainable production methods have boosted demand for—and shed a global spotlight on—her oeuvre. We caught up with Vedel, who is based in the southern town of Aabenraa, to hear how she got her start—and where she’s headed next.

M A R C H 2 0 1 9 | T R A V E L TANGERINE DREAM A N D R E A B L A C K This hotel is a modernist haven dedicated to the greatest Danish designers of the mid-20th century. In hindsight, booking to stay in the boldly coloured Verner Panton Suite directly after a long-haul flight from Sydney wasn’t such a good idea. Open the door to this corner suite at Hotel Alexandra in Copenhagen and arresting hot pink walls in the entry hall lead to a bright tangerine- coloured living room coated in plastic paint and filled with 1960s Panton pieces, including the Pantonova sofa (in orange) and two Panton 1-2-3 chairs (more orange). The bedroom is a luminous burst of purple, with swirly shagpile rugs and a quilt stamped with Panton’s signature circle print. It all makes for a psychedelic experience. Fumbling for the bathroom in the middle of the night in my jet-lagged state results in further panic. The Verner Panton Suite is one of 61 guestrooms in this modernist haven dedicated to the greatest Danish designers of the mid-20th century. General manager Jeppe Mühlhausen began collecting Danish modern furniture in 2001, focusing on the kind of pieces usually only on view in design museums or expensive auction house catalogues. The next morning, as soft summer light streams in, it’s easier to appreciate the Danish designer’s immersive charms. Sitting on a Panton S Chair surveying the bedroom, I understand the designer’s theory that “one sits more comfortably on a colour one likes”.

  • Scandi Navian Design Catalog
SCANDI NAVIAN DESIGN CATALOG modernism101 rare design books Years ago—back when I was graphic designing—I did some print advertising work for my friend Daniel Kagay and his business White Wind Woodworking. During our collaboration I was struck by Kagay’s insistent referral to himself as a Cabinet Maker. Hunched over my light table reviewing 35mm slides of his wonderful furniture designs I thought Cabinet Maker the height of quaint modesty and humility. But like I said, that was a long time ago. Looking over the material gathered under the Scandinavian Design um- brella for this catalog I now understand the error of my youthful judgment. The annual exhibitions by The Cabinet-Makers Guild Copenhagen— featured prominently in early issues of Mobilia—helped me understand that Cabinet-Makers don’t necessarily exclude themselves from the high- est echelons of Furniture Design. In fact their fealty to craftsmanship and self-promotion are constants in the history of Scandinavian Design. The four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all share an attitude towards their Design cultures that are rightly viewed as the absolute apex of crafted excellence and institutional advocacy. From the first issue of Nyt Tidsskrift for Kunstindustri published by The Danish Society of Arts and Crafts in 1928 to MESTERVÆRKER: 100 ÅRS DANSK MØBELSNEDKERI [Danish Art Of Cabinetmaking] from the Danske Kunstindustrimuseum in 2000, Danish Designers and Craftsmen have benefited from an extraordinary collaboration between individuals, manufacturers, institutions, and governments. The countries that host organizations such as The Association of Danish Furniture Manufacturers, The Association of Furniture Dealers in Denmark, The Association of Interior Architects, The Association of Swedish Furni- ture Manufacturers, The Federation of Danish Textile Industries, Svenska Slojdforeningen, The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo put the rest of the globe on notice that Design is an important cultural force deserv- ing the height of respect.
