Y SQUARES -- Ctaith,N.J. ( MS ) 2 & 4 Ftiday Crala. Kump6 Schoae, Mitdted Telvtace One of the nice things about square dancing is the many new people you meet & the friendships which develop. This brings with it a developing interest in their lives & families & of course, the concerns which go with this when something goes wrong. We in Y Squares are fortunate that we are being kept up on both these concerns & on happy events such as birth- days & anniversaries by our Sunshine Chairpeople Doris/Tony Mastroly. They are doing a terrific job keeping our bulletin board posted, cards mailed & announcements made at dances. Our thanks go out to them for do- ing such a great job. And while we're at it, a reminder to members to keep Doris/Tony posted on happenings so they can continue to do so. We seem to note a lessening of ottendance at dances during the recent cold spell, but it doesn't seem to have affected the class. They are rolling along in fine style & we're looking forward to seeing them at our dances in the future. A great time was had by all who attended the New Years Eve dinner-dance. Many thanks to all who labored so hard at making it a success. A lot of preparation and planning goes into that type af- fair, the extent of which many of us may not realize until we get directly involved. How about more volunteers for next year to lighten the load? reporters - Art/Nancy Clough 201-499-0925 As■ww■siwiimIlmwIlir

ok sce ox4 Os06' 4 WESTERN WHEELERS -- PaAk Rid9e, N.J. ( +1 ) 2nd Wed; 4th Sal- CongAegaZconaZ 131 Pa4cack Road At Western Wheelers, it's never just a dance, it's a party! 1981 got off to a great start with our New Year's Eve gala - dancing, a pot luck supper & more dancing. Special guest was a charming doll on her way home to Star Promenaders in Gouverneur,NY from a long trip around the country. Next came our Birthday Party, complete with green & gold dangles. Evelyn Cashell was singularly honored on this occasion; she is the only charter club member still active in Western Wheelers. Marie Meyer whipped up a gorgeous chocolate & cream, round & square cake for this event. Our Snow Ball at the end of January was raided by our neigh- bors, See Saw Squares. It was good to see such a large turnout. As Dot Frasca said, it gave a whole new meaning to "dancing cheek-to-cheek". Jean Mathesen celebrated her birthday that night and a lucious, strawber- ries & cream cake was served to all. Did you know that square dancing burns 250 calories/hour? No "guilts", right? Join us 2nd Wed, 4th Sat! Student dances are being held on our home turf every 2nd & 4th Thurs- day evening at 8 until Easter and then we look forward to welcoming the Graduates at a special dance in April. tepotteu - Chet/die/Lois Vaud?, 201-391-8331 CONGRATULATIONS to 2 NNJ R7leaders now residing in Sun City,Florida.... Janet Vander Linde's ideas for dance themes, & her beautiful pub- licity flyers seem to spark the interest of our members & neighboring clubs alike. The "Jingle Bell Hop", "The Christmas Carol" & the January "Guess Who?" were great successes, as were our February "Be My Valentine" & "President's Ball". "Dance Gypsy Dance" & "Wearin' 0' the Green" are coming up in March. May is our Graduates Dances, free to new graduates. "Lucky Dance" & "Gone With the Wind" are the last two class dances. TENAKILL TWIRLERS -- aupskitt, N.J. ( QS ) 3rd FAiday Bryan School, Bxookaide Avenue There's never a dull moment at Tenakill this year with those lively Rellingers at the helm. January was Delegates Bargain Night; February, of course, is sacred to the little guy with the bow & arrow; but March will be the high point of the year. Not only will we hold our annual Covered Dish Dinner Dance then, but this will be the big celebration of the club's 30th Birthday. Tenakill Twirlers joins Bob Hope who is cele- brating his 30th Year in Show Biz & the 30th National SID Convention in this, the Year of the Pearl. And wait until you see what our pearl divers have brought back from the Pacific. There will be many surprises, not the least of which will be visits from friends of years gone by. The TT Travelers have been on a hunting trip to Western Wheelers (we shot them dead), & a Space Trip to Tenafly Squares. This month we plan to mount a Gypsy Caravan to Hix & Chix. 10 SWINGIN I STARS -- Maywood, N.J. ( +1 2nd Saturday ------Ra;zod Avenue Schaaf_ Today there is much talk about "people" activities - about getting in- volved - & our S/Ding certainly must be at the top of the list. In fact, we dancers are so involved we never take time to step back & look at our- selves, to fully appreciate the incredible amount of work that goes into the planning of a dance. We at Swingin' Stars like to recognize at least some of the people who help make our dances the happy occasions they are. First, Richard Gray, our guru for booking callers (up to a year in advance), Prez Art Taylor who (with lots of held) is official welcoming committee, Evelyn Olsen who always adds that little extra touch to the refreshment table, Yale Carroad who always has words for the occasion (be sure & look for them), & the many other people too numerous to name. You are all highly appreciated, So come - participate - enjoy. Round dancers - 8:00 PM for you and of course we square up at 8:30 PM. Titt we meet again Nan & I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the Officers & Dancers of all the Clubs in NNJSDA. A position of leadership can be fun when you get the kind of cooperation we received from so many dancers. We especially want to say thanks to every- one for that beautiful plaque presented to us for our term as Presidents of NNJSDA. The strength, effectiveness & outreach of NNJSDA has its foundation in the great wealth of interest, skills & dedication of the dancers of its member Clubs. To have been Presidnets has been a great honor, a great challenge & a happy learning experience that will last us the rest of our lives. A current example of what can be accomplished by NNJSDA when fully supported by all Dancers is the passage of AJR 29 declaring Square Dancing as the Official American Folk Dance of the State of New Jersey. In less than a year from the start of our campaign, this Resolution was passed with no dissenting votes by both the State Assemby & State Senate. This has been a total committment by everyone involved in our activity; S/Ders, Callers, & RID Leaders, & it is bringing the desired results. We urge ev- eryone continue their excellent support of Helen/Frank Cavanaugh, Chairper- sons of the American Folk Dance Committee, until they get Governor Byrne's signature on that Resolution, then maintain that momentum until the final & major objective is achieved, namely: to have Square Dancing proclaimed the National Folk Dance of the United States of America. In another suc- cess story, the Callers' Council of New Jersey is to be commended for its keen interest & involvement in our jointly run Workshop, "Catch All Eights". In early April 1981 we will have completed four years of this Workshop & will have returned 23 1/2 Squares of Dancers to Club Dancing. In all that time, the scheduled Callers have never missed a night. The prime mover, scheduler & Caller, Dick Lighthipe, with the very capable assistance of Betsy Gotta & the many Callers, some of whom had a considerable distance to drive, have together with the Chairpersons of each Section, turned a dream & concept into a reality & have earned your praise & thanks. Our Chairper-

sons , past & present are: Mildred/Ron Nitzsche; Helen/Frank Cavanaugh;Ann/ Joe iohutis; Ruth/Ted Zmich; Evelyn/Harold Torode;(continued on page 't! )

A New Year and another sell-out crowd at our annual New Years Eve dance. The affair held jointly with Hill City & Bee Sharps featured great dancing & a delicious buffet afterwards. The decorations were really festive with masses of balloons suspended in the air, greens & ribbons everywhere & a beautiful poinsettia centerpiece on each table. A special thanks to Mike Foley for doing a superb job at the last minute substituting for Dick Jones who was unable to call due to the death of his father. An interesting and rewarding experience was our demo at the Mountain View School in Mendham. Our great demo chairman Virginia/Ed Kenny managed to get up a day-time square (no easy task) to show the 6,7, 8 Phys. Ed. class how it's done. It's never too soon to introduce the fun world of square dancing. We are excited about the progress our class is making, A. especial ly pleased to have several going to class level dances. We wish all new grad- uates many happy years of dancing & invite them all to our graduation dance at Stepping Stones in May. The first few months of 1981 has proved to be busy & interesting with two specials. The Presidents Dance featured the calling of Bob Tarrant & later in February Rusty McLean. A raid was also held to Hanover Squares with an after-party at the Hendrixes. In March a bus trip is planned to Wilkes Barre,PA to visit Carl's Circle Eighters. In April a special with Bill Dann, see our ad on p. 2/. If this sounds like fun, we hope to see you at our club. We would like to dance with each and everyone of you. Buddy Goodell has taken on the role of Raid Chairman and planned and helped execute one to West Milford Flutterwheels in January. Speaking of visitors, Dot/Chick Fowles who danced with us in October sent a letter from their home in England expressing their thanks for a great time. Our Christmas Dance was a smash. Chaired by Doris/Bob Delaney, it has been the source of many laudatory comments since. Lois Bichier has re- covered from her pneumonia & Jim Chukalas is out of hospital. Both are dancing again. Welcome back. All the flu victims appear to be on the mend. The club had a very pleasant evening at the Ocean Waves dance in January. It was designated as "Salute Richmond Dancers" Night. A nice touch, Oceans, and much appreciated. The undersigned earned their Pa- trons badge (finally). It was a ball earning it; we met so many nice peo- ple. The 25th Anniversary Dance of the club is still looked upon as a super highlight among those who were lucky enough to attend. Our 30th is coming up in October & promises to be just as great. Peg/Mike Crisham are chairing the gala event. Watch for announcements. We were all very pleased to read the well deserved tribute to Flo Di Sano in the last issue of the GRAND SQUARE. This pleasure turned to shock when we learned that their son Paul had died. The sympathy of the club 8, we are sure, all Association members goes to Flo & Joe & their family in this tragic loss. tepottem - Jim/Helen Dunlop 201-761-2654

Hi! The Fixin' & the tussin' is under way as all of us s/ders antici- pate, yea anticipate, the many graduations coming up (see ad p.51 ). The first "R.1.0." (Richmond Dancers/Isle Squares/Ocean Waves) class wi 11 soon be history. It is a new chapter in the book of S/D on Staten Island. Most assuredly, it is a memorable one for all involved. The "Old Professor" Marty Clifford has brought this class along beautifully with his smooth, patient expertise. It has been an adventure to see this new class grow & develop into qualified, capable dancers. If you are in the neigftborhood graduation nite, stop in. There's another advantage for our class- they have already danced with members of 3 clubs prior to graduation...when they venture out after graduation, it will be like visiting old friends. 23 KINGS SQUARES -- Bay Ridge, 8400k n N.V. ( +1 ) Sunday (2/m01 PtesbyteAiditrhukch, StAeet We are happy to report that despite the severe weather conditions this winter, our workshop, our class, our R/D affiliate Royalty Rounds, & our dances have maintained exceptionally good attendance. In fact, the en- thusiasm of our members enabled us to charter a bus & fill it to capacity to attend the NNJSDA dance at Montville,NJ in January, where we were 3rd in club attendance. Such a good time was had by all that we are planning to do this again whenever a suitable occasion arises. At this writing we are looking forward to an Ice Cream Valentine Dance to be held in February with Ginny Reaske as caller. incidentally, we wish to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to Ginny for stepping in on very short notice & rescuing our January dance when the scheduled caller could not appear. See our schedule on page ZO for our Spring Dances. Come & join us at our Graduation Ball in April when we honor our graduates ( one of the largest classes in the history of Kings Squares). (+1) 2 5 4 wednebdfiagA Community Mitch 343 Guyon Avenue We extend a warm welcome to all who would join us for an evening of good dancing...workshop at 8 PM - dancing from 8:30 - Ii. It takes a heap of dancing to make a club & the more the merrier, so we invite you to join us. Some of the callers that we have scheduled are Glenn Cooke, need I say more, Joe Landi, a real dandy, & Jim Cargill, the Big Daddy. The new class is coming along just fine under the instruction of Marty Clifford, "The Old Professor". They've learned the fifty basics. Those in the class that once said,"lt can't be done," are now saying "Let's go for fifty-one". The Class Social will be in March with Marty Clifford. It will be a gala affair with refreshments galore, a special inducement to come out & meet the members of the class. This class will have had 3 class dances before they dance with you at the Social, so let's all give them a friendly welcome into the world of s/ding. Let's begin our welcome with a smile, for a smile is the curve that straightens out the square. We can help straighten out the square; let's give it a try. The Isle Squares would like to thank the staff of GRAND SQUARE for its expression of sympathy for our past president, Enid Powell, who expired December 20, 1980. We will miss Enid in our squares & we will patiently await the return of Homer to our fold. Congratulations to our Club Presidents, Donna/Bill Anderson, on becom- ing grandparents. Terry & the baby girl made it all possible and both are doing very well. A reservation had been put in for the class of 1999 for one young girl and a partner to be named at a later date.

Ralph Trout of South Jersey will be guest caller at our fifth Tuesday special in March at our usual location. See map in our ad p.34. Oscar/ Laverne Olson,co-directors, report that our class started the second se- mester with 12 couples and 13 singles, the transfers having just balanced out the drop-outs, with Bob Benner of Edison continuing as caller/instruc- tor. And the class is in good shape, thanks to the use of Sue/Tony'Zaccag- niols Summit basement for three extra sessions during the holidays. Graduation "ceremonies" will be the first Thursday in April at the Jr. High School, and our regular first Tuesday dance in April will be open, free, to all graduates of the area. Following that, our regular dances will be geared to new dancers. Congratulations to Manny Amor, our cal- ler of 121/2 years, and his new bride Gail who were married in February and to Ron/Ree Rumble on the arrival of a son in late January. too/aut. - ChaAteh Batdwin White 201-273-4952 With housing critical at Seattle's NSDC, a possible solution-jotn a "pack- age tour such as AMERICAN SQUAREDANCE PO Box 488, Huron,Ohio 44839 offers. 29 LE VE L S What are they? Many dancers have received handouts listing the CALLERLAB PROGRAMS and/or "Basic Manuals of S/D Calls". Certain S/D calls have been grouped together to make the learning pro- cess easier. These grouping, or LEVELS, are progressive & are named

Basic - Extended Basic (EB) - Mainstream (MS) - Quarterly Selections (QS)- Plus 1 (+1) - Plus II (+2) - Advanced (A I) (A 2) -Challenge (C I etc) - In NNJ most graduates have been exposed to, and have a fairly good working acquaintance with, the calls that comprise the Basic & Extended Basic levels. The calls that bring one up thru the Mainstream (MS) Level may need a little more practice. Every 3 months CALLERLAB suggests 1 or 2 calls callers may want to workshop as an extra at the clubs that dance at Mainstream (MS) Level. These are called Quarterly Selections (QS). (There are none over the summer.) In NNJ most clubs have selected a level compatable with their dancers the caller has been instructed to use no calls beyond this level. This does aot exclude one workshop tip of the next level if a club so desires. Graduates are urged to dance at clubs listing themselves Extended Basic (EB), Mainstream (MS) or Quarterly Selection (QS) clubs until comfortable with all their calls. Periodically a series of workshops are offered to help dancers advance to the next level. It makes no difference at which level you dance - many dancers can be comfortable at different levels - you'll find the same friendly, congenial people among those of the same dancing ability. The enjoyment of the dance is the interaction among the people present. For your convenience, we include a listing of the clubs listed at Main- stream (MS) and Quarterly Selections (QS) in this issue of GRAND SQUARE. Time to start thinking about Graduation dance at Hi Taws in Apri I. It will be on a Monday evening and has been designated as a free dance to new graduates. All dancers are invited to help welcome new graduates. Herb Arkin gave a very enthusiastic description of the Tournament of Roses Parade in which the Thiessens had danced on the S/D float to thou- sands of spectators, at the Delegate's Meeting in January. Herb would like every one interested to send in an application to participate in the next Parade. We will try to get him to one of our dances to tell us all about it. We want to thank all who came out to our Steve Kopman dance and made it a successful nite. Please send post cards to Governor Byrne to please sign Bill AJR 29 to make the S/D the state folk dance.

We're really thrilled this year because we have friends who will be graduating this year. We hope that even- tually they will join us at Colonial. This past January brought a special with Dick Jones which was well attended & enjoyed by all. Then came President's Helen/Maurice DuBois 56th wedding anniversary dance celebration. It was really wonderful to see so many people out to honor such a great couple. The night had a special air of joy to it and Lee Kopman saw to it that the dancing was as special as the occas- sion. It will be hard to top that evening, but looking ahead we see two more specials one with Bill Dann and the other with a new up and coming caller - Todd Fellegy from Connecticut. We hope youili all come out for our dances if you like advanced dancing. Yes we are planning our usual summer workshops - more on that in next issue. kepoAtua-Joyce/Paut HueNch 201-335-4723

Jules Pozsar called to a large turn-out & Roger Lund was our jolly Santa dispensing gifts. In January, with Dick Pasvolsky as caller, we paid tribute to Ellie Tout for her sup- port over the year on Rounds. Thru efforts of Ahearns, a special event brightened January when 3 sets of CBS gave a demo for a benefit ballroom dance in Kearny. A delicious buffet was provided & Scottish meat pies were a popular feature. We know we S/Ders love to dance, but those Scots are energy plus! For the benefit of our cultural exchange with the Bel- gium Folk Dancers this summer we are working toward a big dance in May. Watch for our ads in GRAND SQUARE. Frank Olier's foot has recovered (but don't step on it) & he is enjoying dancing again. BUT, our caller Jules has smashed & broken his thumb. NeV- ertheless, he called for our class that same day in spite of it. That's our friend Jules! Have a good year everyone. We hope you met Abe Lin- coln at our President's Ball! (+2 AM 14t Paddy Bergen Matt Auditotium Early arrivals at our Feb. dance thought it was Association summer dance time at the Mall - or weren't you among those who helped move the bingo tables So we could dance last year? But no, it was merely a mixup between office and custodial forces and by 8:15 a space was cleared and Doc & Peg could get on with their early ROM teach. The late start enabled Steve & Debbie Kopman to join in the R/D ring too. As usual Steve kept the floor moving with his +2 APD calling and we eagerly await his return. Check on page 2L for future callers. Rounds at 8 & squares at 8:30. Tilt We Meet Again....(continued Vtom page 12 Mary/Eugene Ciallella; Bertha/George Yezarsky; Marie/Bill Morrison & Fred/ Kathy Hill. Outreach programs which reach beyond our every day S/D activities, such as the State & National Folk Dance campaigns, the joint operation with CCNJ of the Catch All Eights Workshops and L.U.S.T. provide many opportunities for developing new leaders. Once they see progressive programs & real needs, the Dancers in NNJSDA Country come forward. We can take care of our our own & extend our dedication & influence beyond our own borders. These are pleasant, comforting, yet honest thoughts with which to start the New Year. Involvement is a healthy habit with the Dancers of NNJSDA & this attitude & continuing support means more people will be enjoying the fun & fellowship of our Square Dance activity each year. 51 Space 6 other problems precludes having a monthly calendar. Instead we will include this universal calendar of all NNJSDA clubs regularly scheduled dance nights. 8y comparing the actual month to this page, a dancer can figure out who is dancing when. The "where" 4 other particulars, such as workshops, etc, will be found In each club's write up and/or ad. On the bottom of this page we will always publish all cancelled dances (that we hear about) for the period covered by that issue of GRAND SQUARE. It is the responsibility of each club to keep us up to date on any changes. Thank you for your cooperation. Doc/Peg, Tirrell 201-568-5857.
