Recap: Western’s fi nal series of the season, versus Western Oregon, was wiped away due to an outbreak of the swine fl u on the Monmouth, Oregon campus. WOU students, including all athletic teams, were immediately quarantined. With neither team in contention for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship or post-season play the games will not be made up.

The swine fl u scare also affected the Wolves baseball team, whose weekend series at Central Washington was postponed. The 2009 GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships were moved from Monmouth to Forest Grove, Or- egon and co-hosted by Pacifi c (OR).

The weekend series was supposed to mark the fi nal home appearances for pitcher Jessica Ros- encrants and fi rst-baseman Morgan Parkerson.

Rosencrants was a two-time GNAC All-Star, sporting a career earned run average of 3.34 while striking out 193 hitters over two seasons.

Parkerson, a Lakenheath, England native, had a career batting average of .244 and hit seven home runs as a Viking.

The Vikings and Wolves had split a March 21 & 22 weekend set in Monmouth and now lead the all-time series 41-20.

THE UNIVERSITY Western Washington University is a public, comprehen- sive university with a national reputation for academic excellence, dedicated to providing the highest quality undergraduate education in the Pacifi c Northwest.

A Western education offers students the opportunity to develop active learning skills to last a lifetime and serves them well in today’s pluralistic, changing and highly technical world.

While large enough to offer students a range of top qual- ity programs, Western remains small enough to focus its resources on the needs of individual students as they build career skills on the sound foundation of the arts, humanities, sciences and professional studies.

THE CAMPUS Western’s main campus on the western slope of Sehome Hill has been called a “jewel of a university.” It offers a magic blend of art and nature with views of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands to the west and a pan- oramic vista of the city of Bellingham.

Some campus locations also offer scenic views of Mount Baker and Washington’s Cascade Range to the east and the Canadian Cascades to the north. The campus is just minutes by bus from downtown Bellingham as well as the city’s historic Fairhaven district, and its proximity to both locations also puts it within easy walking distance. Western’s main campus and the adjacent Sehome Hill Nature Reserve encompass 216 acres near the heart of Bellingham.

Counting Lakewood Recreation Center and Boathouse, the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, and the Viqueen Lodge, Western properties occupy 300 acres.

THE STUDENTS Over 13,000 students call Western home during each academic year, starting in late September and continu- ing through June. A third of Western’s students reside in on-campus residence halls. Western offers something for every student, with more than 100 cultural, aca- demic, recreational, religious, social and political clubs and organizations as well as multiple venues for the per- forming arts and extensive opportunities for community service.

PROGRAMS & DEGREES Western is organized into a graduate school and seven undergraduate colleges: the College of Business and Economics, the College of Fine and Performing Arts, Fairhaven College, the College of Humanities and So- cial Sciences, Huxley College of the Environment, the College of Sciences and Technology, and Woodring College of Education. WWU ATHLETICS In its 10th year as a full member of NCAA Division II (Sept., 1998), Western Washington University already has made national appearances in men’s and women’s bas- ketball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s rowing, football, men’s and women’s golf, softball and volleyball.

The Vikings have won the last four NCAA II National Championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) in women’s rowing, becoming the fi rst school in any division to ac- complish that. Western placed second nationally in vol- leyball in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2002 and 2003, and reached the national semifi nals in men’s basketball in 2001 and women’s basketball in 2000.

A member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Western won the league’s fi rst four All-Sports Champion- ships in 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05), and placed second the last three years.

In women’s basketball, Western ranks among the top 15 in alltime victories among all four-year schools, having a streak of 10 national appearances snapped last season. The Vikings had the fourth-longest winning streak in NCAA II history when they won 57 consecutive league matches in volleyball from 2002-04 and took 38 straight victories in women’s soccer from 1982-84. Western won the NAIA National title in softball in 1998.

The Vikings’ athletic history dates back over a century. In- tercollegiate competition began in football and basketball in 1903. Today, nearly 500 student-athletes compete in 16 varsity sports. The 2007 NCAA Report found that 69 per- cent of Western studentathletes receive their degrees in six years or fewer. That was fi ve percentage points higher than the average for student-athletes in the 10-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference (64 percent), and 14 points higher than the national average for NCAA II schools (55 percent).

FACILITIES Athletic facilities on Western’s campus include Sam Carver Gymnasium, a softball fi eld, artifi cial-surfaced Viking Field, a sixlane all-weather rubberized track, and four practice fi elds.
